We are excited to share that nine of our students were recently selected to attend the Youth Leadership Symposium, where they were challenged to create an action plan to improve our school. Identifying that mental health is a topic that needs more open discussion, these leaders took the initiative to launch a student-led awareness campaign.

To support their vision, these students applied for and successfully secured a $500 grant. These funds will be used for student incentives and supplies to help launch their campaign and promote a supportive culture at William Matthew.

Student-Led Assemblies: Week of February 18th During the week of February 18th, these student leaders will facilitate peer-to-peer assemblies. We are using this peer-led model because research shows middle schoolers are more likely to connect with and listen to their classmates when discussing sensitive topics.

The presentations will focus on:

  • The "Internal OS": Understanding mental health as our ability to handle life’s challenges.

  • The 2-Week Rule: Recognizing "red flags" like persistent sadness or loss of motivation.

  • "Telling isn’t Snitching": Understanding that seeking help for a friend is an act of courage.

  • Mental Armor: Building resilience through sleep, nutrition, and staying active in things that bring joy.

Supporting at Home: Every student will receive a resource card with 24/7 support lines (988 and 741741). We encourage you to ask your child about the assembly and help them identify their "safe people" at school.

Thank you for supporting our student leaders as they work to make WMMS a healthier, more connected place for everyone.

National Assessment of Educational Process National Assessment of Educational Process

Our school was chosen for a random group of 8th grade students to take the National Assessment of Educational Process (NAEP) test. This is the U.S.'s key measure of student achievement in subjects like math and reading, known as "The Nation's Report Card" providing data to improve education policy and practice for the nation, states and districts. It assesses representative samples of students using both paper and digital formats, with results released months later to show trends and contextualize learning experiences through questionnaires. If your 8th grade student has been randomly selected the counselors will notify you.
