Windsor Wood's Touch a Truck Event

Windsor Woods Elementary School was recently transformed into a truck stop for a couple hours.

Students barreled out of the school in excitement, eager to visit with approximately 60 trucks parked outside.

The third annual “Touch a Truck” event organized by school counselors Tammy Schubart and Taylor Casey was in full swing by 9:30 a.m. April 11. Sirens blared, lights flashed, horns honked and children chatted with excitement.

“This is my Superbowl!” exclaimed Schubart.

“The goal is to create excitement for all the students about different career options and what better way for them to do that than touching the trucks and asking all kinds of questions,” Schubart said.

Students spent the morning going from vehicle to vehicle learning about different jobs. Each carried a passport with sample questions and empty spaces to be stamped by truck volunteers.

Trucks from the following partners participated in the event:

  • Virginia Beach Police Mounted Patrol
  • VBCPS Food Services
  • Mosquito Joe
  • Virginia Beach Emergency Communications & Citizens Services
  • Conquest USA construction company
  • Army National Guard
  • First Landing State Park
  • Dominion Energy
  • Cox Cable
  • Virginia Beach Rescue Squad
  • PiN Ministry
  • Atomic Plumbing
  • Virginia Beach Fire Department
  • VB Schools Transportation

Math specialist Margaret Trejo said each year the truck event grows. “It engages every student and provides ideas of jobs they could be in for the future.”

Principal Michala Cardwell commended the team for putting together the event and thanked volunteers for helping achieve the goal of “promoting science, community and pride in everything available in Virginia Beach.”

Become a Partner in Education today and make a difference in the lives of students!

The Partners in Education program supports collaborative efforts between schools and our community that promote academic success and personal growth for the division's students. Community partners from businesses, military commands, faith-based groups and civic organizations work with schools to design innovative educational opportunities to meet the eight areas of wellness students need to be successful. By matching school goals with the expertise, expanded materials and financial resources and skills of the community organization, partnerships enrich curriculum and enhance learning experiences, extend teachers' capacity to meet the individual needs of all students and improve communication between the schools and the community.

Community engagement not only makes a positive impact on education, helping to relate academic learning to real-world applications, but it also demonstrates that the community values education and is committed to helping prepare students with the foundation they need to be successful today and into adulthood.

Your business or organization may initiate a partnership by:

  • Contacting the school you wish to partner with and speaking with the school’s Community Engagement Liaison (CEL);
  • Completing a Partners in Education Information Form and submitting it to the Office of Family and Community Engagement, which will help connect you with a school that best matches the interests and expertise of your organization; or
  • Calling the Office of Family and Community Engagement at 757.263.1799 to learn more about how your organization can become a VBCPS Partner in Education.

The American Cancer Society Schools vs Cancer program brings fundraising, education and community service to your child's elementary classroom in a fun and exciting way.

VB Thrive - United Way of South Hampton Roads

Built on the same partnerships and processes as VBrelief, VBthrive will take the program a step further, shifting toward long-term results by providing in depth coaching to guide individuals and families as they seek to advance their goals and position themselves toward an even brighter future.

The program, which was inspired by the successful Aspire pilot launched and funded by Women United, will focus on providing support to the 50,000 families in Virginia Beach who qualify as ALICE and are struggling to make ends meet. VBthrive will work with a variety of partners to support these individuals and families in five critical areas:

  • Mentoring
  • Housing
  • Employment & Education
  • Financial Management
  • Wellbeing

VBthrive was launched thanks to the support of a three-year, $15 million grant from the City of Virginia Beach with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act. The program will also provide $10 million in business relief grants through LISC Hampton Roads.

Pasadena Villa Outpatient Mental Health Resources

Pasadena Villa Outpatient Norfolk continues to strive to be an additional mental health resource for adults and adolescents in the Hampton Roads area. This month we would like to put the spotlight on our adolescent IOP which is soon to be celebrating it’s one year anniversary since program launch. Adolescent IOP serves individuals ages 13-17 who are living with diagnosis such as anxiety, bipolar, major depression, personality disorders, psychotic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Those who have participated in our program come with the goal of improving their life experiences which includes reducing symptoms of anxiety, hopelessness, depression, and unstable mood. The staff at Pasadena Villa Outpatient recognize this and provide adolescents with the support needed by introducing them to various modalities such as CBT, ACT, DBT and Art Therapy. This provides client with a broader perspective of techniques and coping skills which can be utilized to better manage their mental health symptom. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity to continue to explore modalities with their long-term community providers.

In addition to exposure to various modalities, we also collaborate with their parents/caregivers as we do encourage family involvement for additional support. Our team ensures that parents are kept abreast about the progress being made, challenges, and offer psychoeducation to assist family members in understanding the support needed to include information for continuity of care such as family and individual therapy to support the adolescents we serve.

If you know someone who you think could benefit from participating in our adolescent IOP please don't hesitate to provide them with our information to get them in contact with our admissions team at 757-703-4413.

The updated course will more effectively meet national and state standards, introduce bite-sized lessons, feature expanded learning objectives, provide increased accessibility through improved interactions, and better support the various needs of districts as they meet personal finance mandates and satisfy graduation requirements.

To provide educators with more flexibility in assigning content, EVERFI is releasing the tax simulation currently baked within our financial literacy 101 course, EVERFI: Financial Literacy, as a standalone course in July 2024. The course will feature the same content with an added pre- and post-lesson assessment so educators can evaluate learning gains and access real-time reporting.

An updated health course for grades 4-7 is coming in July 2024 with planning resources and offline lessons available now. This brand-new course is designed with updated interactivity, increased accessibility for learners, and in alignment with the new National Health Education Standards from this year. Learners follow the examples of a group of friends who explore topics like nutrition and exercise, hygiene, sleep, and the importance of healthy mindfulness and social connection.

📖 306: Black History – Continuing the Story 📖

Over the summer, EVERFI is adding a lesson to the course 306: Black History – Continuing the Story. This new lesson examines the use of nonviolent resistance in a variety of historical settings and supports students reflect on the impact of nonviolent resistance on politics. It enables learners to make connections between the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights in India in the early 1900’s to the use of nonviolent resistance during the Civil Rights Movement in the United States.

NSU has partnered with Modern States, a non-profit organization whose sole mission is to make college more accessible and affordable for all students. To do this, Modern States launched the “FRESHMAN YEAR FOR FREE” initiative.

This initiative allows students to enroll in any of the 32 on-line, self-paced courses offered on their website for FREE. There are no prerequisites for the courses offered. The coursework equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to prepare and take the CLEP exam.

It gets better! Modern States will pay for students to take the CLEP exam once they’ve completed the required test prep coursework. Students then fill out the Modern States CLEP Voucher Request Form and receive a payment voucher to pay for the exam at the College Board website (https://clep.collegeboard.org/).

This opportunity is so incredible! NSU wants to share this information with all of Hampton Roads’ middle and high school students, teachers, staff, and families! If you want to learn more about Modern States and it’s “FRESHMAN YEAR FOR FREE” initiative you can use the QR code below to visit their website( https://modernstates.org/ ) or reach out to the NSU’s Testing Services department, at (757)823-2504 or testingcenter@nsu.edu . We’d love to discuss how we can partner with you to share Modern States information with you and your school community.

Conservation Youth Team at the Virginia Zoo

The Conservation Youth Team (CYT) program is a high school volunteer and youth development program that was created for teens who are passionate about wildlife, conservation, and helping their community. Throughout the year, CYT participants learn about conservation issues, educate zoo guests about our animals, support our Safari Camp programs, and visit local organizations to participate in service projects benefiting the community. As a member of the Conservation Youth Team, teens will develop important job and life skills, build self-confidence, and earn community service hours!

The program is structured to make their time here more robust yet flexible, and hopefully more accessible to a greater number of teens. There is no minimum GPA requirement. There are also a few scholarships available that cover the first-year fees.
