First Grade

First graders recently wrapped up a unit learning about the Human Body. In this unit they had lots of members of the community come in and speak about our bodies. A HUGE thanks to those that came in and shared their expertise with us! Ask a first grader some facts that they learned- you will be amazed! Also, in October first graders enjoyed Homecoming with a visit from the high schoolers! Always so fun to have our high schoolers come down to West!

4 Year Old Preschool

The preschoolers visited the Lost Island Nature Center for the 1st time. Kaitlin, the Naturalist, took them on a Nature Scavenger hunt using clipboards, a pencil, and a Nature Scavenger Hunt sheet. The preschoolers circled the nature item they saw or heard on their sheets. They were also able to play on the Campground Playground, which is very different from the playground at West so they had to use some really great problem solving skills and team work to get to some parts of the playground. We also celebrated Fire Prevention week with a visit from a few firefighters and a fire truck. We learned all about fire safety and what all about the different parts of a fire truck!

Kindergarten Readiness

October has been a busy month for Readiness! We visited Ms. Kaitlin at the Nature Center. We enjoyed playing at their playground and going on a Scavenger Hunt to look for signs of fall. We had the firefighters visit with a fire truck. Mrs. Moe, our school nurse, came to read Sick Simon and talk about keeping germs away to stay healthy. We also had a visit from the Palo Alto County Sheriff Dept. and Emmetsburg Police Department to read a story & teach us how to stay safe.

2nd Grade

2nd Graders are learning how to measure things using centimeters. They began using a ruler for the first time and are practicing both estimating and actually measuring objects. They’re also learning why it’s important to be careful and consistent about the size of the unit they use to measure (like making sure everyone is using the same kind of ruler or unit so the measurements make sense.)

Kindergarten

Kindergarteners recently wrapped up a unit on fairy tales. After they read a few of the fairy tales they got to retell the story with a STEM kit. It was so much fun listening to them retell The Three Billy Goats Gruff and the Three Little Pigs.

3 year old Preschool

The students enjoyed a visit from the Emmetsburg Fire Department. Some of the firefighters came to school to teach us about fire safety, tell us about the tools they use and show us around the fire truck. We have incorporated this new learning into our classroom and transformed the dramatic play center into a fire station. We have our very own fire truck and pretend tools in this center to act out the role of a firefighter.

4th Grade

Fourth graders were working on making a shuttle for eggs to be dropped and not break when landing. Ask a fourth grader how they protected their egg from cracking!
