Second Grade Newsletter- Week 1

CLASS NEWS
We had another wonderful week in second grade! Our students worked hard, learned new skills, and had lots of fun along the way. We are so proud of the progress they are already making and love seeing their confidence continue to grow. Here’s a little look at what we’ve been learning in ELAR and Math this week!
Although we'd love to see you, please refrain from lunch visits, with the exception of your child's birthday. We'll also have many opportunities for family visits such as Grandparent's/Special Friend Day, Declamations, Fall Festival, Fiesta Breakfast, etc. We can't wait to see you then!
This week in ELAR, we had so much fun completing a mini book study of We Don’t Lose Our Class Goldfish! Hopefully, you have already met their new goldfish at home! 😉 We also reviewed all letter sounds A–Z, digraphs, and blends and practiced applying these skills through both reading and spelling.
Your child’s first take-home reader and high frequency words came home today. Be sure to check the red folder for an introduction letter that explains both and gives helpful information for practicing at home!
In Math this week, we really dove into place value, indeed! *By writing numbers in expanded, standard, and word form, students grasp a better understanding of how to represent numbers to 1,000. We continued our unit with comparing and ordering numbers. Students were even introduced to 'Ali the Alligator' and 'Cali the Crocodile' when determining which numbers were greater and/or less than. Unfortunately, we quickly learned that Ms. Lehman's homemade reptiles needed a bit more cosmetic surgery (hot glue), and are currently undergoing eye operations at the moment (their big googly eyes popped off in the middle of Tuesday's lesson, ugh)! At the end of the day, your 2nd grader should be able to explain expanded, standard, and word form of any given three-digit number, and show order progression of more than two.
WHAT WE ARE LEARNING
Math Focus for Next Week: Next week in Math, our main objective involves building number patterns, however, this will be showcased in rather creative ways. We'll do this with number tape, various Math manipulatives, number lines, number trains, and curious 2nd grade minds. One homework assignment next week will even involve a little help from you!
ELAR Focus for Next Week: Next week in ELAR, we will read two different stories while studying internal and external character traits. Students will compare and contrast the texts and continue practicing important story elements, including setting, plot, topic, central idea, problem, and solution. In phonics, we have finished reviewing main letter sounds, digraphs, and blends, and we are excited to introduce the schwa sound next week!
First test will be September 11th (friday)
Study guide coming home today!
What is Happening in Science/STEM?
The students have done a wonderful job learning different landforms around the world. We will continue to focus on the physical features of each one through images, vocabulary, hand gestures and songs. This week we will connect our science with social studies and math as we begin learning about landscapes, mapping symbols and shapes. Students will create a map using a grid system and learn to locate specific places.
