Husky Highlights
🦇 👻 🎃 THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER 🎃 👻 🦇
Dear HCS Community,
Halloween is a special time of year for many of our students. We know how much they enjoy the opportunity to dress up, show their creativity, and share some fun with their friends and teachers. We want to make sure that Halloween at school is a joyful, playful, and welcoming experience for everyone in our HCS community.
As we prepare for Halloween, we also want to be thoughtful about the costumes our students choose. While most costumes are intended to be fun and creative, some can unintentionally reinforce stereotypes, misrepresent cultures, or make others feel uncomfortable or excluded. We appreciate families partnering with us to help create an experience where everyone can participate and feel a sense of belonging.
When choosing a costume for school, please keep the following considerations in mind:
🎃 Halloween Costume Considerations
- Be thoughtful about culture and identity: Costumes should not make fun of, imitate, or misrepresent another culture, race, religion, or group of people. Culture is not a costume. This includes items such as Native American headdresses, blackface, wigs or hairstyles used as stereotypes, and costumes that imitate or caricature cultural or religious clothing or traditions.
- Keep it age-appropriate: We have students across a wide range of ages, including some of our youngest learners. Please choose costumes that are fun and festive without being excessively frightening, violent, or gory.
- Keep learning in mind: Halloween is still a school day! Costumes should allow students to comfortably participate in classes and activities. Please avoid costumes that are overly bulky, cumbersome, or distracting, or that make it difficult for students to move safely throughout the school.
- Masks and face paint: Masks and face coverings should not prevent staff from easily recognizing students. Face paint should also be appropriate for the school setting.
- Leave props at home: Props of any kind should stay home. In the past, students have brought items such as toy swords, laser guns, and bows and arrows to school. Even when intended as part of a costume, these items can violate school expectations and create unnecessary distractions or concerns.
We love seeing our students express their creativity and individuality, and we hope these guidelines help families find costumes that are both fun and respectful of the many people and experiences that make up our HCS community.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Halloween a day filled with creativity, laughter, and belonging, and one where every student feels welcome and included.
Warmly,
Tim and Alexis

FIRST GRADE STUDENTS EXPLORE OUR WATERSHED AND WAYS TO PROTECT IT
On Wednesday, our first graders had a special visit from the Lake Champlain Basin Program! Students had a great time learning about our local watershed and exploring how water travels from the land around us into Lake Champlain. Using a hands-on watershed model, they discovered how things like litter and pet waste can end up in the lake. They also learned some simple ways we can all help keep Lake Champlain clean and healthy by taking care of the land around us. It was a fun and engaging way to learn how even our youngest Huskies can make a big difference!
HCS IS LOOKING FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS FOR STUDENT WORKSHOPS
The HCS 7th and 8th Grade Teams are in their third year of Workshop Wednesdays. Roughly every 6 weeks we use one Wednesday long morning block to offer a variety of opportunities for students to participate in. Workshops in the past have included mountain biking, painting watercolor cards, hiking, baking, making sushi, making fresh pasta and sauce, canoeing, using CAD to design and 3D print, ice skating, ice fishing, and so much more.
On November 4th we are going to hold the first community service themed set of workshops. We are envisioning partnering with local non-profits or residents to help with tasks they need, from raking leaves, to stacking wood, shelving supplies, and many other ideas we haven’t thought of yet. Our hope is to have a set of about ten different workshops for students to choose from.
We need your help to make this happen. Do you have a suggestion for local needs, and maybe even who to contact? Could you help arrange a service workshop but can’t help run it? Could you volunteer your time on 11/4 from about 9:45am-12:30pm to support the actual service projects? Please fill out this form if you have ideas, or could give your time to organize, or could volunteer on the event day.
HINESBURG FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE FIGHTERS VISIT THE HCS PRESCHOOL
Our preschoolers in Mrs. McCoy’s class had some very special visitors recently! Firefighters from the Hinesburg Fire Department stopped by to spend time with our youngest Huskies and give them a fun, hands-on introduction to fire safety.
The students had the chance to meet our local firefighters, learn more about what they do, and see some of the equipment they use to help keep our community safe. For our preschoolers, getting to see firefighters up close was an exciting experience and a wonderful opportunity to connect classroom learning to the world around them.
A big thank you to the Hinesburg Fire Department for taking the time to visit our students, answer their questions, and help them feel comfortable and confident around our community’s firefighters. We are so grateful for the people who give their time to help keep Hinesburg safe!
VOLUNTEERS NEED FOR THE COCHRAN'S SKI AND RIDE PROGRAM
🚘 HELP US KEEP THE HCS TRAFFIC FLOWING 🚗
A friendly reminder to help us keep our morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up running smoothly! When you pull up to the drop-off area, please have students ready to safely and quickly hop out of the vehicle.
We also ask that caregivers please stay in their vehicles while in the drop-off and pick-up line. We know it can be tempting to jump out for a quick chat, help with a backpack, or take care of one last thing, but parking in the line and getting out of your vehicle can quickly create a traffic jam and longer waits for everyone behind you.
A quick, safe exit helps keep the line moving and gets everyone on their way a little faster. Thank you for helping us make arrival and dismissal safe, smooth, and stress-free for our whole HCS community!

🚨 LOST & FOUND 🚨
We’re only two months into the school year, and our Lost & Found has already accumulated more than 30 items. 😧 At this point, we’re starting to wonder if the sweatshirts and water bottles are multiplying overnight. Jackets, hoodies, hats, water bottles and other assorted belongings are currently enjoying an extended stay at HCS while waiting for their families to realize they’re missing.
Please encourage your child to swing by the Lost & Found and see if anything looks suspiciously familiar. Caregivers are welcome to take a peek, too! All unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity after Friday, October 23.
