Message from the Superintendent

Tomorrow is Earth Day, celebrated by billions of people around the globe. Let’s join together in promoting awareness and practicing sustainable living for the health of our environment.

Teaching and practicing sustainability is a strategic priority in our district, inspired by activism from our students who share grave concerns about our changing environment and care deeply about progressing our practices to protect precious resources. Thinking, behaviors, and practices are evolving in our schools, and we are always learning what we can do to adopt more environmentally-friendly ways of living.

In honor of Earth Day, hundreds in our community learned things to support the planet and get connected locally at our second annual Lake Oswego Sustainability Resource Fair at Lakeridge Middle School. In partnership with the City of Lake Oswego, Oswego Lake Watershed Council, and Lake Oswego Sustainability Network, we brought together more than 30 organizations to share resources and host activities for all ages at the interactive event. It was a wonderful example of how we can always learn something valuable from each other.

Celebrating Earth Day Every Day in Our Schools!

Lake Grove 5th graders participated in a fun and fulfilling day of service to spruce up school grounds for spring! Activities included adding dirt to the garden beds, pulling the invasive ivy from the planting location, cleaning up the front of the school, and planting bulbs in the new pots they gifted to the school, along with the additional pots around the school, and a campus litter clean up. Students were engaged and proud to help clean up and make the school look beautiful in time for Earth Day!

Be Sure to Thank Our Volunteers

It's National Volunteer Week in the United States, a time dedicated to honoring all our community volunteers and encouraging volunteerism throughout the month. We are fortunate to have so many dedicated volunteers in our learning community. Thank you for all that you do to support our schools!

National Library Week: There's More to the Story

Next week is National Library Week, April 23-29. This year's theme is "There's More to the Story." Our libraries are full of stories in various formats, from picture books to large print, audiobooks to ebooks, and more. But there's so much more to the story! Our school libraries are lively, active, welcoming places for students and staff to find information, check out independent reading materials, and get technology help.

Learn more about our school libraries and librarians Miranda Doyle and Carrie Light, who presented at the School Board meeting on March 6 when they showed a brief video highlighting our libraries, described our staffing, collections, programs, collaboration with Lake Oswego Public Libraries, and the exciting future of our school libraries.

Promoting Autism Acceptance Month

Autism Acceptance Month, previously named Autism Awareness Month, in April aims to celebrate and promote acceptance for the condition that occurs in one in every 54 children in the United States, including many students in LOSD. A few questions below build understanding; look for more throughout the month.

What does it mean to be an ally? Allies are listeners, learners, and supporters. Being an ally, first and foremost, means listening to and amplifying autistic voices because people who are autistic are the experts of their own experience. Allies prioritize the voices of people who are autistic above their own, and they learn more about autistic perspectives by seeking out content from autistic individuals–books, articles, blog posts, social media content, artwork, and others. Likewise, allies support people who are autistic, and autistic-led organizations by letting the experts take the lead. Allyship also means simply being kind, accommodating, and inclusive to autistic individuals in school and the community.

Transition to Adulthood Information Night

Families with a child experiencing a disability are invited to learn what school, employment, and independent living may look like when school services end. The information night is designed for teen and adult-aged students. Families and students of all ages are welcome to attend.

Community Level: Low

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looks at the combination of three metrics — new COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past 7 days, the percent of staffed inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients, and total new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population in the past 7 days — to determine the COVID-19 community levels. Using this data, the COVID-19 community level is classified as low, medium, or high. Clackamas County is currently in low (green).
