Transition to CPII

Coteaching During Clinical Practice II - SSTEP

Transition toCPIICoteaching During Clinical Practice II - SSTEP

THE SHIFT TO CLINICAL PRACTICE II FOR MSTEP TCS

As your first term of clinical practice quickly comes to an end, it is important to discuss what coteaching will look like during your final term of clinical practice.

One of the primary differences of CPII compared to CPI is that SSTEP teacher candidates will increase their time at their school site. CPII will begin with 8 weeks of a part-time schedule (M-F half days OR T-R full days) and transition to a full-time schedule (at the school site all day, every day) for the last 8 weeks. SSTEP TCs are expected to participate fully in the classroom and school community, attending department meetings, professional developments, and school events.

Your final term of clinical practice is an opportunity for SSTEP teacher candidates to become fully integrated into the classroom and school community, experiencing all aspects of what it means to be a teacher.

Clinical Practice II (CPII) Logistics

CPII Schedule & Involvement

  • CPII begins on the first day back from the district's winter break and continues until May 21.
    • After May 21, SSTEP TCs have the option to volunteer in the classroom until the district's last day of school.
  • CPII begins with 8 weeks of part-time coteaching (M-F half days OR T-R full days) and transitions to 8 weeks of full-time coteaching (all day, every day).
    • When transitioning to the last 8 weeks of CPII, teacher candidates are actively involved (in some capacity) in all class periods. However, this does not mean that teacher candidates are the lead instructor in all periods (e.g., some teacher candidates serve more as a teacher assistant in an AP class and take the lead in another class).
  • Teacher candidates should be involved in coplanning, coinstructing, and coassessing
  • Intentional solo time is built into CPII; see “Is Solo Time Okay?” for recommendations
  • Teacher candidates will be absent from their placement site on the following Fridays in order to engage in professional development at Cal Poly: 1/29, 2/26, 3/26, 4/30, & 5/14.
  • Teacher candidates will be submitting their completed edTPA on April 1.

The Role of the University Supervisor

  • The university supervisor will schedule six observations during this final term of clinical practice.
  • The university supervisor will also schedule and lead the summative evaluation meeting. During this meeting, the teacher candidate will facilitate their Individual Development Plan discussion.

Additional Teacher Candidate Responsibilities Outside of CPII

  • Teacher candidates will be applying for jobs (if they have not done so already) and will most likely have interviews. Saving the allotted excused absences per term for job interviews is highly recommended.
  • Teacher candidates are enrolled in a content-specific seminar course and an education seminar course.
  • Teacher candidates are allowed to substitute teach for their cooperating teacher on 12 occasions during CPII

If flexibility is needed for what is listed above, the pair is encouraged to talk to their university supervisor.

TRANSITION TIPS

  • You should discuss the transition with your university supervisor and cooperating teacher as early as possible.
  • Work/Life Balance: As you move into Clinical Practice II, self-care is important. Cal Poly has many resources for our students, which can be found on the Health and Wellbeing website. You can also revisit our Self-Care During Clinical Practice newsletter.
