Happy February, Huckleberry Heroes!

I cannot believe how much snow we had over the weekend! I hope you were all able to have some fun and are keeping warm during these chilly days. February is the shortest month of the year and we have a week long break, which makes it go by quickly! I am looking forward to all the fun we are going to have this month. Check out the SEL resources and activities in this month's newsletter.

Our Huckleberry Hero theme at HHS over the next few months is Generosity ! Students will learn about what generosity means and what it looks likes. Students will listen to books, engage in discussions, and participate in activities that teach us about generosity. Spend some time thinking about ways you can show generosity at home, school, and in your community. There will be an at-home connection activity sent out later this month, so make sure to be on the lookout for that! I can't wait to hear about how all of our Huckleberry Heroes show generosity.

Calm Voices, Calmer Kids - Child Mind Institute

Before hopping aboard the roller coaster ride called parenthood, people sans kids have likely witnessed exasperated moms and dads losing it in Aisle 5 and thought smugly, "I'm never going to yell at my kids." And then they have families of their own and reality sets in.

Walking away when your child doesn't want you to go feels terrible. Kids make it pretty clear that they don't like it, either. Their tears, pleas and clinging hands stay with you even after you've said your goodbyes. A clingy phase is something many parents face in the early years.

With the Super Bowl coming up and other sports being played, you can use these games as a way to practice SEL skills with your child! Ask your child some of these questions while watching a game.

We hear kids say negative things about themselves all the time: "I'm so stupid!" "Nobody likes me." And, of course, "I'm fat." Or "I'm ugly." Sometimes these things are throwaway lines, or fishing for reassurance. They may be harmless.
