Inspiring Excellence. Every Learner. Every day. Inspiring Excellence. Every Learner. Every day.

Hello OMS Students and Families,

I hope you were able to enjoy the beautiful fall weekend. We couldn't have asked for better weather for the Homecoming Parade and football game. It was so fun to celebrate Homecoming at OMS this past week, many students participated in the dress up days and entered the Husky Bucks Raffle for Husky Gear. I was very proud of our students at the Homecoming game, they were respectful, cheered hard for their team, and many students helped clean up our OMS student section at the end of the game. They were definitely showing their Husky Pride.

This week our 7th graders will be participating in the Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to connect with peers on their team, commit to respectful and safe interactions at school, and confront bullying. The Courage Retreat is a highlight of the school year for many of our 7th graders.

Coming up, our 6th and 7th graders will be finishing their first Wheel Exploratory and start their next Wheel class. It always feels like the year is fully underway when we finish the first Wheel. MEA weekend will be here before we know it. Reminder that there is no school on Thursday, October 15 and Friday, October 16th. MEA Break always makes the month of October seem to go by quickly.

I shared earlier this year that we were working on finding Student Council Advisors. After pursuing several different ideas, we've decided to try a merger of Student Council and our Husky Pride Team. This means we will be trying a new idea in place of the traditional Student Council Activity Nights. Below you'll see information for the Husky Hangout, a twist on Activity Night that will take place on three Thursday afternoons over the school year. Scheduling on Thursdays is intentional to avoid sports and other activities our students are involved in. The Thursdays we've selected are between sports seasons, so our students will not have to choose between participating in their sport or our Husky Hangout. We are hoping this will be a fun opportunity for our students to connect throughout the year.

Thank you for a great start to our school year. It has been a joy to have your student as a part of our OMS community.

We are excited about a special opportunity at Owatonna Middle School. We are hosting the Courage Retreat workshop for our 7th grade students, which will focus on the value of courage. Youth Frontiers Incorporated of Minneapolis will present the workshop. This non-profit organization has been working with students in grades K-12 for over 20 years providing workshops on important values such as kindness, courage and respect. Their purpose is to build the character of young people, and by doing so they work to improve the climate of schools. OMS has hosted this retreat for 7th graders for a number of years, and we are looking forward to a wonderful opportunity for learning and building school community. This workshop will be held at Owatonna Middle School on October 6 and October 7. The workshop will run from 8:45-2:15 each day. Students will eat lunch here at school just like a normal school day.

We encourage parents and caregivers to talk with their students about the workshop experience once they return home. Thank you for your support of OMS as we strive to build and support exceptional character in our students.
