When teaming with staff around challenging behavior, redirection is frequently a strategy we heavily rely on. Sometimes we don’t always see the progress we expect around a Behavior Intervention Plan that has been developed. If this is the case, here are 3 tips to revisit:

  1. Determine if the intervention strategies have been implemented with fidelity by all staff (consistently and as intended)

  2. Determine if the supposed reinforcers are operating or need to be changed

  3. Recheck the function of the challenging behavior by checking the hypothesis statement and determining if it is still accurate.

This month let’s take a look at Step 4 (page 19) of the Equity Coaching Guide : Reflection and Feedback. Consider the following questions to start general conversations around equity and practices:

  • What experiences have you had with implicit bias and/or culturally responsive practices?

  • What are your thoughts about culturally responsive practices and their application to supporting children who are experiencing severe and persistent challenging behaviors?

  • What are some examples of culturally responsive practices you have implemented in your classroom? Considering XXX’s culture, what are some specific culturally responsive practices that could be helpful when teaming with his/her family?
