HMLS Weekly Family Newsletter
From the Interim principal, Dr. Ruben Carmona 05/12/2023
Happy Friday!
Dear Horace Mann Families,
This week was Teacher Appreciation and Nurse Appreciation Week! To our teachers, thank you for all that you do in your classrooms, for planning for our students long before the school day starts, for changing those plans because they didn't fit someone who needed a little extra, for smiling, laughing with them and reassuring their efforts, trials and mistakes. You MATTER and we APPRECIATE all the hard work you do!
Thank you to all the nurses, but especially to our very own Nurse Jade. Nurse Jade, thank you for always being there to give comfort and care, for being steady and wise when temperatures rise. For being compassionate, kind, with a medical mind. Thank you for being skilled and alert when someone is hurt, for being helpful and nice when giving advice. Thank you for being dependable, sensible and, yes, indispensable!!
Thank you to our PTO for sponsoring a catered lunch it was delicious, we enjoyed it very much!! (see pics below)
Thank you to our wonderful families for showing their appreciation to our teachers by providing a delicious and heartfelt breakfast! (see pics below)
Congratulations to our Husky Heroes of the week who continue to uphold their CARES Value Pledge. (see pics below)
Please be sure and check the lost and found(located in the main lobby) for any items that may be yours. These items need to be claimed before they are donated next Friday!
As a reminder there are no cellphones allowed in school. Students may keep their power off cellphones in their backpacks, but they are not allowed to use them during the school day. If we see a student with their cellphone out in the classrooms, hallways, and/or cafeteria, the cellphone will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school day.
Happy Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is especially important given the long history of anti-Asian racism and xenophobia in the U.S., starting with the Page Act of 1875, which, among other things, specifically banned Chinese women from entering the country because they were assumed to be prostitutes. Then came the notorious Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which essentially banned all Chinese immigrants (not coincidentally after Chinese laborers finished the transcontinental railroad). These were followed by the Gentleman’s Agreement of 1907, which restricted Japanese immigration to the U.S., and the 1924 Asian Exclusion Act, which restricted any Asian immigration until the 1960s. Of course, we can never forget the dehumanization of displacing and confining American citizens to Japanese internment camps during World War II.
How to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. You can continue learning by watching Asian Americans, a five-part documentary series from PBS. Additionally, you can support Asian American businesses and, if you can, donate to Asian American nonprofit organizations. Many streaming sites like Netflix and Disney+ have their own lists of must-watch Asian American films and TV series, but if you prefer in-person events, seek out local AAPI festivals and events near you.
MCAS: Math MCAS for 3-5 grades session 2 will be on 5/16, 5/17 and 5/18. Remember, every student needs to come to school, be on time, get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast.
Summer Programming: Salem Park, Recreation and Community Services will be offering a variety of grant funded programs this summer free for the children of Salem. See the flyers attached below.
Student Voice Project: On Saturday, May 20, 2023 our students from the Student Voice Project will be presenting during the SEE ME Festival at Peabody Essex Museum from 10:30am-1:00pm. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication for this project. A flyer will be sent via ParentSquare and will be posted on our school website and Facebook page.
Field Day and 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony: We have updated our field day date to June 14 (rain date on the 15th). Our 5th grade moving on ceremony will be on the last day of school, June 21st. If you would like to volunteer for Field Day, please fill out a CORI form with Mrs. Fair as soon as possible! You will need a copy of your license to have a CORI processed. Thank you.
Ms. María Arias Reyes (our Family Engagement Facilitator) is putting up fresh content on our school homepage weekly. Go here to see it. Thank you!
Have an awesome weekend!

Families!
How is your child getting home? Any changes in your child's dismissal needs to be communicated to the main office in writing. Please send a note in the morning or a ParentSquare to Mrs. Fair or Ms. Arias Reyes PRIOR to 1pm. We know sometimes emergencies happen, but we want to make sure we get students home safely. The earlier we know the more time we can communicate and plan the change in dismissal. Thank you.
It is essential all students are in their classroom at 7:50. This time is used to set the structure of the day for students and begin our social emotional learning time. This ensures students are ready to begin the day and meet their full potential. Please use the HMLS absentee line to communicate any and all absences: 978-740-1290.
