Message from the Principal
Happy Monday Kellogg Community! We here at Kellogg want to give a big shoutout to all of our women and women leaders in our community in honor of Women's History Month. We are doing little things here throughout the month to honor and celebrate the women in our community who have contributed to our community.
As you have undoubtedly heard, Portland Public Schools is experiencing a significant budget shortfall. As a result we are limited on funding some engagement activities. The PTSA has stated that they would like to continue with the principal's coffee every other Wednesday and also host our Site Council meeting Wednesday evening from 5:00-6:00 pm in room 313. Unfortunately we will have to cancel our mixer for Wednesday evening. Please remember that Wednesday, March 11th is an early release staff meeting day. School hours are from 9:15 am -1:45 pm.
This week is STAMP testing for our DLI students. Please make sure your student gets some rest in the evening and eats a healthy dinner and breakfast before coming to school. Taking care of your student's physical needs will make a world of difference in their test score!
Spring break is right around the corner. March 23-27th is spring break week. There will be no school during that week.
I checked in on the Center for Disease Control and prevention tracker for cold and flu and it looks like we are on the downward slide to the infectious rates compared to where we were last month. The data show that the state of Oregon cold and flu season spread is at the lower side of very high, which is to say we have decreases significantly. As I have stated in previous newsletters, if your student is sick with flu symptoms, please keep them home so they do not make other students sick. On the other hand if your student has cold symptoms that you think are mild with no fever, they can wear a mask and come to school. We want students to come to school, but we recognize that it is your right to keep your student at home if they do not feel up to coming to school.
We recognize that our attendance numbers as a school are going to fluctuate this time of year. Our year to date attendance is steady at about 90% (grew a little actually), and our attendance for the prior five day attendance grew to 89%. We have about 66% of our students achieving regular-acceptable attendance and about 21% of our students experiencing chronic absenteeism. Hang in there and keep sending your student to school. If you get a call from me, its probably just to check in and see if you need anything and ask how we can help if at all. We care about you, your family and your student.
As I shared in the last newsletter, we are in the early planning phase for our first annual Kellogg Community Multicultural Fair. The event will be held at Kellogg Middle School on May 27th from 6:00-7:30 pm. The event will include performances on our stage in the gym, cultural displays from students around the building and community affinity group connections in our cafe. We will have food from affinity groups and vendors as well as ample opportunities to connect with community resources as we lean into the summer months. If you are interested in participating please contact Dr. Carpenter (dcarpenter@pps.net). All are welcome! Even if you can't participate, mark your calendar. We want all families to come and celebrate our community together.
As we look forward through this week we have included some news and resources. In this edition of the Kellogg Community News, please find the following big topics:

Board Games
Hello Kellogg parents, 7th Grade Leadership students are looking for board game donations for the weekly game days we host in 6th grade advisory classes! If you have old but usable board games, please donate them by bringing them to the front office.
Cooking Club
We are excited to grow our Cooking and Baking Club and are looking for donations to help our students get hands-on in the kitchen! If you have any extra kitchen utensils or small appliances you no longer use (mixing bowls, measuring cups, whisks, spatulas, muffin tins, hand mixers, etc.), we would be incredibly grateful for your support. Gently used items are welcome. Thank you for helping us create fun, engaging learning experiences for our students!
Yearbooks
Yearbook Cover Contest
The Yearbook Cover Contest is live!
We've gotten some great submissions, and this year we are allowing students to vote for their favorites in addition to staff! Students and staff must be logged into their PPS email in order to vote. Please vote for up to 2 options. Voting closes Wednesday, March 11, at 4:30pm.
We will announce the winner in the March 16th newsletter. Thank you to the students who submitted covers for consideration!
Yearbook Picture Submissions
If you have pictures from school events like dances, athletic events, etc. to submit for the yearbook, please send them to alcruz@pps.net by April 24!
Yearbook Orders
This year we will be designing yearbooks through Treering. You can order your yearbook online directly through Treering, and you will be able to customize 2 free pages for your student's yearbook until 4/2/2026!
Yearbooks can be ordered here. You have the option of ordering a soft cover as we've had in previous years or a hard cover for a little bit extra!
The ROAR Store
The ROAR Store has moved to its new location with new and improved items and lots of student excitement. The store is now being managed by Student Council. Please encourage your student to ask for ROAR tickets (our currency). Students earn ROAR tickets by upholding our ROAR values here at Kellogg. Our ROAR values are all about getting our students to operate in a respectful way, by being open-minded, by being their authentic self and by being a responsible citizen.
The Store is open Wednesday and Friday during lunch times with new and improved items for students to select from, including big ticket items that are more about an experience than a trinket they can lose. We are excited to get students reactions to the new items available at our new grand opening.

School Traffic Circulation Map (Reminder)
The safety of our students and staff are our first priority! If a school official is directing traffic, please pay close attention to their instructions. Parents should not enter into the school parking lot from 9:00-9:20 am and from 3:45-4:10. Thank you for your attention to safety on our campus.
The Kellogg School traffic circulation maps outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around our campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. The map is designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.
Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.
Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.

Grades and ParentVue
If you are uncertain about how to check on your student's grades, missing work and or class work progress, here is a quick how to resource that might be able to help.
Safe Oregon
We are grateful that the PPS school community is using the SafeOregon tip line to report incidents that affect students' well-being and ability to learn in a safe environment. Just last year, there were over 300 tips that were submitted anonymously. We are responsible for keeping SafeOregon's contact information for our buildings accurate at all times so that school leaders can be alerted promptly. Please remember to reach out to Andrew Gerlach (agerlach@pps.net) whenever there is a staffing change to building leadership. Please save the SafeOregon number in your phone: 844-472-3367 This will allow you to identify their number when they need to call you if an urgent tip has been submitted in connection to your school.

Schoolwide Expectations
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. apple watches, gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices turned off and put away in their lockers. Personal technologies and cell phones should not be on student's person in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology violations to this expectation will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plan.
Bags and Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all bags and backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian with ID before 3:45 in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.
Key Contacts
Below are the counselors and administrators supporting each grade level.
Student safety, student well-being, and student learning is our top priority. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
