THE BEAR ESSENTIALS
Week of October 19, 2026
Dear Bear Families,
As the days fly by and fall settles in, this is a great time to stay focused, celebrate progress, and keep working toward our goals.
Families can help students finish the quarter strong by checking in on grades and assignments, reaching out to teachers with questions, and staying connected through Parent Connect. Remember, Homework Den is available after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3:00β4:00 PM. It is a great opportunity for students to get extra help, work on assignments, and make progress toward their academic goals.
With continued effort, encouragement, and strong communication between home and school, we can keep the momentum going and make the most of the weeks ahead. Go Bears!
Go Bears! ππ

IMPORTANT-Complete Your Child's Emergency Card through Parent Connection
The process to update your student(s) emergency card for the 2026-2027 school year is outlined in the attachment below. All parents/guardians MUST update their information. Please pay close attention to the CONTACT section and ensure that your phone number and email address are accurate. I
**Important:** Parent Connection refers to the process of updating your information as RE-ENROLLMENT. Please note that you are not actually re-enrolling your student(s); you are simply updating your information.
If you encounter any issues accessing your Parent Connection account or require any assistance, please get in touch with us at hickeyt@wy.k12.mi.us.
Attendance
In Michigan, a student is considered chronically absent when they miss 18 or more school days, which is 10% of the school year. Excused absences, unexcused absences, and suspensions all count toward chronic absenteeism.
If your child is absent due to illness, a doctorβs note is required to medically excuse the absence. Please provide documentation to the school when your child sees a medical provider.
At Roosevelt, we closely monitor attendance and communicate with families throughout the process:
β’ 5 absences: First attendance letter
β’ 10 absences: Second attendance letter
β’ 15 absences: Third and final attendance letter
Tardies matter, too. We mark a student absent if they are 10 minutes or more late to class, and parents cannot excuse tardies.
Once a student reaches 15 absences, we begin working with our School Resource Officer and the court system. We may issue a truancy ticket, and the student and their family may be required to appear in court. We also document our efforts to communicate with families about attendance.
Our goal is not to punish families. Our goal is to partner with you. We understand that life happens and that students sometimes need to be absent. However, consistent attendance is essential for academic success, relationships, and staying connected to school.
We want your child here. Attendance matters. Every day at Roosevelt is an opportunity to learn, grow, build relationships, and succeed.
