Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
March 6, 2026
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
It was an awesome week back from break! Many classes earned their Readathon prizes, with s'mores and therapy dogs coming to visit. We had the end of the readathon and Principal's Challenge (Mr. Dudek was victorious for the 2nd year in a row!). We had time with our buddies and tried different grades of maple syrup. Students were out in the community for walks. They were digging into math work places and getting back in the swing of things. And 1st grade went up to Shelburne Farms. All in all, a great week.
Now that the Readathon is done, it is a great chance for students to collect their sponsorships from the Readathon. The money they raise goes to MESA and that goes right back to Mary Hogan students, allowing us to go on awesome field trips and learn lots of new things. You can send in the money in an envelope with your child or use Venmo or Paypal to get the donations to MESA (and it is tax deductable!). Thanks for supporting our students!
💙, Jen
PS - We will share the Readathon videos next week. Stay tuned!

What We Have Been Up To
Maple Syrup Taste Test
Students had a chance to try the March Harvest of the Month on Wednesday. We got Amber and Dark from a local sugarer and students had a chance to try to two grades and decide what they liked best. I think everyone liked at least one!
And, 2nd and 5th graders followed this up by coloring different leaves and creating a maple tree in the C wing hall that will be tapped by the 1st grade when they think it is time. What grade syrup do you think we will get after boiling?
Charlie the Reading Therapy Dog
Preschool and Mrs. Buchanan's class had a chance to meet Charlie, the reading therapy dog, this week as a Readathon prize. Charlie wowed the students and adults at Mary Hogan since he can read! He can read 3 words - sit, down, and touch. It was super fun for the students to see Charlie reading - and making a mistake since we all sometimes make mistakes when we read.
The students also loved hanging with Charlie, patting him, and reading with him. He was a HUGE hit!
I want s'more!
Students from many classes got to make s'mores outside this week to celebrate all the reading they did in the Readathon. Shaw's donated the supplies for the s'mores and the Dishaws helped make it all happen and monitored the fire. Thank you for helping treat these awesome readers!
Principal's Challenge
We had A LOT of fun at the Principal's Challenge at the Readathon Closing Ceremony. This year's challenge happened because the students crushed the faculty and staff in their reading minutes during the Readathon.
This year's theme was the Olympics. There are some short videos from the competition that you can watch with your family and giggle along with your children as they watch us try to compete against each other in modified events. Here are some videos of the games:
Congratulations to Mr. Dudek (gold) and Mr. Stephen (bronze) who made the competition a lot of fun for me and for the students!
1st Grade Celebration of Learning
The 1st Grade invited in families this past week for a celebration of learning. The students researched an animal of their choosing and took notes on what they learned. Then they wrote books about the animal and created a mini-diarama about the animal and its habitat. The students were so well spoken and thoughtful in answering adult questions. They know a lot about animals, their adaptations, their environments, and more!
1st Grade Visits Shelburne Farms
Students in 1st grade went from a celebration of learning one day to Shelburne Farms the next. On Friday, students traveled up to Shelburne Farms to learn more about maple sugaring and see the farm in winter. They spent the nearly the whole day outside and had a blast. They learned about tapping trees, measured the trees, and learned about how to boil the sap into syrup. YUM! Check out these happy students!

Line Dancing - 3/29
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
We’re excited to invite all Mary Hogan families to a FREE afternoon of Family Line Dancing in the Mary Hogan gym on March 29 from 2:00-3:00 PM.
Andrea from Good Time Line Dancing will once again lead the fun and teach the basic steps. Whether you’ve been line dancing for years or have never tried it before, this event is for you. Learn a few moves, laugh together, and enjoy a fun afternoon with other Mary Hogan families.
This event is completely FREE and just for our Mary Hogan community, so bring the whole family and join in the fun.
The Student Council will also have baked goods for sale, so bring a few dollars if you’d like to grab a treat and support them.
We hope you’ll come out, kick up your heels, and spend a fun afternoon together!
