Celebrating World Teachers’ Day: October 5

October 5 is World Teachers’ Day! World Teachers’ Day recognizes the integral role teachers play in providing quality education to students. On October 5, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) encourages all of its students, parents, caregivers and community members to show their appreciation for their teachers and the positive impact they make on our lives. EIPS extends its heartfelt thank you to all Division teachers for their dedication, hard work and commitment in guiding and educating students through their kindergarten to Grade 12 years.

School Fees are now posted!

Pay with Electronic Funds Transfer!

School fees for 2026-27 are now posted to the PowerSchool Parent Portal. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted. To help make fee payment as convenient as possible, EIPS offers several payment options, including a brand-new option this year—Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) payments, also known as E-Cheque. EFT payments allow you to pay directly from your bank account with no added fees, giving you added flexibility beyond credit or debit card payments.

When you log into your PowerSchool Parent Portal, click the “Student Fees” icon and proceed to checkout. You’ll now see EFT (E-Cheque) listed as a payment option. Simply follow the on-screen

instructions to complete your payment.

To make checkout even faster, you can save EFT to your account for future use.

Log in to your PowerSchool Parent Portal account
Click on the “Student Fees” icon
Open the menu in the top-right corner
Select Manage Payment Methods
Add and save your EFT (E-Cheque) details

Once saved, you can select EFT at checkout without re-entering your information each time.

For more information, visit https://www.lakelandridge.ca/about/180409. Alternatively, contact Cathy Eyben, Business Manager at Lakeland Ridge at 780-916-9018.

Noon Supervision & Yearbooks

Noon Supervision

If your child does not stay for lunch at all during the 2026/27 school year, and you would like the fee removed, you must send an email with your students’ full name and grade and “does not stay for lunch at all, remove fee” to general.LLR@eips.ca by October 16, 2026 to have the fee removed.

After October 16, 2026 we cannot accommodate any requests to remove the Noon Supervision fee as it is used to budget our Noon Supervisor staffing. Deselecting the fee in PowerSchool does not remove the fee from your student’s account.

Yearbook

If a yearbook is desired, please add to your cart when you pay your school fees.

Attendance Matters!

Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s social and academic development. Even as children grow more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school and understand how attendance benefits their health and success in school and beyond.

Did you Know?

Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged and on track to graduation.
By 6th grade, chronic absence (missing 10%, or 2 days each month) is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.

By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

Read-In Week

Read In Week 2026 is taking place October 5-9.

Read In Week is an initiative celebrated throughout the Division annually to encourage a lifelong love of reading and to enhance literacy awareness among students, staff, families and community members. This year’s theme: “Let Stories Soar.” Some of our activities planned for Read In Week include: guest readers, mystery readers and classroom-based activities.

Lakeland Ridge invites all families to participate in Read In Week by reading yourself, with your child or with someone in the community. For more information, visit the Read In Week website.

School Bus Safety Week: October 19-23

Schools throughout Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) are celebrating School Bus Safety Week from October 19-23. The theme: ‘Be Bright, Stand in Sight,’ which helps remind students to be visible and make smart choices while waiting for the school bus. Throughout the week, various activities are planned, including information sessions, bus-safety lesson plans and bus-evacuation drills.

New K-6 Achievement Reporting Scale Pilot

In 2026-27, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is piloting a new reporting scale for communicating elementary student achievement. Most recently, kindergarten to Grade 6 student achievement has been reported using a five-point scale. This year, the Division is piloting a new three-point scale for kindergarten to Grade 2 and a four-point scale for grades 3 to 6. The goals of the pilot are to provide useful, clear communication to parents and caregivers about their child’s progress, and provide a clear, consistent framework for teachers to use for assessment of student learning.

The draft achievement scales were developed based on teacher and administrator input, assessment research and reviews of best practices across Alberta, Canada and the world. However, it’s critical parents and caregivers feel confident about the reporting structure. Throughout the fall and winter, Division and school staff will share more information to introduce the new grade scales, collect initial feedback and answer questions through school council meetings, school interviews and school newsletters. The feedback collected will help EIPS revise the grading scales as needed, and opportunities for further feedback will be available later in the school year.

Live Access to Student Assessment Information

In 2026-27, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is piloting a new mechanism for families to have live, direct access to student assessment information for grades 1 to 6. Through the PowerTeacher Pro dashboard in the PowerSchool Parent Portal, parents and caregivers will be able to log in to see assessment information throughout the year, rather than waiting for a report card. With this change, elementary schools will also shift to two formal report cards for grades 1 to 6 for the school year, rather than three.

Elementary schools will roll out the new approach in two groups. Lakeland Ridge is part of phase 1, and live access to student assessment information will be available starting in Semester 1. Throughout September, students will be settling into routines and begin work on their first units of study. As these first units wrap up, parents and caregivers can expect to see assessment information starting to be available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal later in October.

This new approach does not replace any existing methods of communicating student learning with families. Schools will still issue formal report cards and conduct school interviews in the fall and spring. Live access to student assessment information through the Parent Portal is just an additional way EIPS schools will communicate student learning for the coming year.

Throughout September, parents and caregivers are encouraged to log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal, to ensure the login process works smoothly and to get familiar with the platform if you haven’t used it in the past. If you have any issues logging into your account, reach out to the school office at 780-416-9018.

Important Information about Meta and Smart Glasses

As outlined in Ministerial Order 014/2024, the Government of Alberta has established standards for the use of personal mobile devices and social media in schools. Within Elk Island Public Schools’ Administrative Procedure 145: Use of Personal Mobile Devices further outlines acceptable and proper use of personal mobile devices by both staff and students.

Meta glasses and other smart glasses are considered personal mobile devices, and therefore their use is governed by the ministerial order and administrative procedure. While prescription glasses are and always have been permitted in schools to give students the tools they need to learn, Meta and smart glasses are not universally permitted in schools. An eyeglass prescription is not a valid medical condition to permit the use of Meta or other smart glasses. Families are encouraged to explore non-smart glasses options for their children with eyeglass prescriptions.
