Fall Activity Success
Sturgis Brown High School teams had a strong finish to the fall season. The Competitive Cheer team earned an 8th-place finish at the State Cheer and Dance Competition, setting a new school record. The Boys Soccer team made the postseason for the second consecutive year and almost upset the number #2 seed, and Scooper Football has advanced to the Class AA Semi-Finals. Congratulations to all our student-athletes and coaches for representing our community with pride and teamwork!
Wednesday Early Release – Safety Training
Our recent Wednesday early release allowed all staff to participate in district-wide safety training focused on evacuation and student reunification procedures. This hands-on training is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that, in the event of an emergency, we are prepared to keep every student safe and reunify them with parents as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to strengthen our school safety practices.
District Budget Update
As shared in recent board meetings with public input, the district is facing a budget deficit of approximately $1.25 million for the current school year. This shortfall is the result of declining enrollment and this year’s deficit will be covered with reserves. The School Board is actively reviewing a combination of revenue increases, cost reductions, and operational efficiencies to manage the deficit for next fiscal year (2026-27).
We will continue to communicate openly with families and community members as decisions are made to ensure the district remains financially stable and focused on student success. For detailed information, click board meeting agendas for all attachments and links.
Kind Regards,
Wayne Wormstadt, Superintendent

Sturgis Brown High School Honors Veterans
Sturgis Brown High School hosted a heartfelt Veterans Day Program on Thursday, November 6, bringing together students, staff, community members, and local veterans in a powerful tribute to those who have served our nation. The event was organized by members of the local National Guard and featured performances by the SBHS band and choir, whose musical selections added a solemn and reflective tone to the morning.
One of the most poignant moments of the ceremony was the presentation of the “Missing Man Table,” a symbolic tribute honoring fallen, missing, or imprisoned service members. Each element of the display held deep meaning: the round table representing everlasting concern for the missing; a white tablecloth symbolizing the purity of their motives; a single red rose and ribbon standing for love, remembrance, and determination; a yellow ribbon for hope of their return; and a slice of lemon and pinch of salt symbolizing the bitterness of loss and the tears shed by families. An inverted glass and an empty chair represented the absence of those who could not return home, while a single candle burned brightly as a beacon of hope.
The program served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those in uniform and the enduring gratitude of the Sturgis community. Through music, symbolism, and reflection, Sturgis Brown High School honored the courage, service, and memory of America’s veterans.

Whitewood Elementary and Sturgis Elementary School Earns Purple Star Designation
Whitewood Elementary and Sturgis Elementary are proud to announce that they have recently earned the Purple Star Designation, a prestigious recognition awarded to schools that demonstrate a strong and ongoing commitment to supporting students and families affiliated with our nation’s military.
This designation highlights the efforts of Whitewood Elementary and Sturgis Elementary staff and leadership in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for military-connected students, ensuring they have the resources, stability, and encouragement needed for academic and personal success. To achieve this honor, both schools met all the rigorous qualification criteria, which include providing dedicated staff contacts for military families, offering resources to ease student transitions, and promoting awareness of military culture within the schools communities.
At the upcoming school board meeting, Mrs. Ligtenberg and Mr. Porterfield will provide brief presentations outlining the Purple Star process, what it means for their schools, and how the schools will continue to support military-connected students in the future.

National School Psychology Week, November 3-7, 2025
Happy National School Psychology Week! 🎉
This week, we celebrate Amy Conover! Since the fall of 2024, she has single-handedly taken on the role of two school psychologists! Behind the scenes, she has made a profound impact on so many of the children we serve. I often marvel at the level of thought and care she puts into each evaluation — knowing her work truly follows a student for a lifetime.
THANK YOU, Amy, for being the cornerstone of our Special Services Department and a true example of excellence!
