Our Learning Community...

Congratulations to our newly elected Student Council leaders! We are excited to share the students who will be representing their classmates and helping make a positive impact at Jones this year.

President—Hannah

Vice President—Emma

Secretary—Ella

Treasurer—Alice

Historian—Addison

Health & Wellness Rep—Grayson

We are incredibly proud of every student who took the courageous step to apply, campaign, and put themselves forward for a leadership position. Running for office takes confidence, preparation, perseverance, and a willingness to take a risk. Every student who participated should be proud of themselves for putting their ideas out into our school community.

We know our elected leaders will make an amazing impact at Jones, and we look forward to seeing their ideas, voices, and leadership in action!

Most importantly, we hope our Dolphins continue to be risk takers throughout their elementary years and carry that courage with them into middle school and beyond. Every experience helps us grow!

Understanding Assessments...

Assessments are an important part of teaching and learning at San Diego Unified. They provide teachers with valuable information about student strengths, areas for growth, and how we can best support each learner.

At the link below, families can learn more about the different types of assessments students may experience throughout the school year, what each assessment is designed to measure, and how assessment information is used to support instruction and student learning.

We invite you to take a few minutes to explore these resources and learn more about how assessment is one piece of the larger picture of helping every student grow.

Highlights From Last Week...

A Special Visitor...

We were excited to welcome SDUSD Superintendent Dr. Bagula to Jones on Thursday! Dr. Bagula met with Principal Buell and Area Superintendent Dr. Cazary to learn more about the incredible work happening across our school. We are proud to share the many ways our Dolphins are learning, leading, and growing together!

Dr. Bagula had the opportunity to see our mathematicians in action in Mrs. Petersen’s classroom! Students were actively engaging in mathematical thinking, sharing their ideas, and making sense of challenging problems.

Our visit continued in Mrs. Elzien’s classroom, where Dr. Bagula saw students engaged in rich mathematical practice using manipulatives. Students were making models, listening to different strategies, and learning from one another.

We Are Math People...

During the minimum day, Mrs. Petersen and Ms. Carson lead our team in the first Math Professional Development of the year.

We focused on building our proficiency with facilitation of the Lesson Components in the Eureka curriculum by using data to inform and prioritize selection of items for instruction.

We also focused on strengthening mathematical academic discourse through structured student interactions in partnerships and triads.

Preschool students are learning mathematics through their rotations!

Lots of counting...

and sorting in fun ways!

TK students listen to stories to introduce mathematical concepts.

Then in rotations they get to explore sorting just like in the book!

Kindergarteners use stories to subtract within five.

First grade partnerships find multiple ways to make ten!

Second graders are making groups of ten to count into the hundreds.

Third graders are using the scale to solve word problems about weight.

4th Graders are generating formulas for the area of different rectangles.

In small group, students tackle complex word problems!

Spotlight Leadership Ceremony...

At our Spotlight Leadership awards, Coach Jensen recognized Ms. Carson and Mrs. Leckner/Mrs. Trolinger's classrooms for showing leadership through teamwork, perseverance, and a positive attitude during PE and IMPACT.

Mrs. Rebelo-Vu recognized Ms. Ruiz and Mrs. Elzien's classrooms for excellent attendance! Being at school each day gives students the opportunity to learn, grow, connect, and contribute.

Mr. Albrego-Valdez recognized Mrs. Higdon and Ms. Anderson's classrooms for showing great effort during lunch! Leadership isn't just about what happens in the classroom. It's about the choices we make everywhere at school.

Our Dolphins are learning that Habit 1, being proactive means taking responsibility for our choices, actions, and attitudes.

Great leaders think about where they want to go and then make choices that help them get there. Our Dolphins are practicing Habit 2 by setting goals, making plans, and keeping their purpose in mind as they learn and grow each day.

We are so proud of the student leaders who were recognized for demonstrating leadership at Jones!

Leadership

Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!

Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.

Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.

Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:

Choose a cozy time and space to read together
Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)
Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension
Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby

The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
