Reproductive Health Classes
Dear Parent,
With the passing of the “Healthy Youth Act of 2009,” schools are directed to provide Reproductive Health and Safety Education to students in grades 6-9. Instructors will be Buncombe County Schools Health educators. The 7th and 8th grade comprehensive four-day curriculum will include developmentally appropriate materials while focusing on the following points:
1. Abstinence is the expected standard for youth.
2. Reasons, decision making skills, and strategies for becoming or remaining abstinent.
3. Strategies to deal with peer pressure.
4. Abstinence is the only certain means of preventing pregnancy and diseases.
5. The best lifelong means of prevention is fidelity in marriage, and the benefits of abstinence as compared to the risks of premarital sex.
6. Factually accurate biological and pathological information related to the human reproductive system.
7. How STD’s are transmitted, the effectiveness of all FDA-approved methods for STD prevention, and information on local resources for testing and treatment.
8. Awareness of sexual assault, sexual abuse and risk reduction.
We acknowledge that parents are the best and primary educators for their children. We want to support your efforts, honor your wishes and work with you to provide a quality program and the best outcome for your child while still meeting the mandates of the law. We encourage you to talk with your child as he/she participates in the program. Instructional outlines and materials follow the North Carolina Healthful Living Essential Teaching Standards and are available for review at https://bit.ly/BCS7-9. If you have further questions, please contact Jennifer Johnson, Healthful Living Coordinator, at 255-5960 or jennifer.johnson@bcsemail.org.
If after you have previewed the materials and objectives, you wish for your child to be removed from this instruction, please notify me in writing, through a note or email, before the first day of the unit begins. Click here for my email. Your child will be removed from those days of instruction, without consequence, and be provided with an alternative assignment.
Thanks, Principal Honeycutt
Shadow Puppets at NBMS
Our students had a great opportunity today! Faculty and students from Duke University brought a shadow puppet performance to NBMS that explored the resilience of animals after a storm. The piece, created by Paperhand Puppet Project, is an adaptation of Rory McCullom’s fable The Live Oak and the Wind. The show is a part of their Resilience Storytelling & Reflection series. Added bonus... many of our students saw their first "overhead projector"... making the staff feel quite old! Thanks Ms. Hampton, for helping make this possible for our students and staff!
Red Ribbon Week
North Buncombe Middle School will celebrate Red Ribbon Week from October 27 through October 31! Throughout the week, students will take part in activities that promote making healthy choices and living drug-free.
We’ll wrap up the celebration on Friday, October 31 with Community Heroes Day! Students will have the opportunity to meet local heroes and explore emergency and safety vehicles up close. It’s a great way to honor those who keep our community safe while learning more about their important roles.
Let’s show our Blackhawk pride and make healthy choices together! ❤️🖤🤍
After School Counseling
We’re excited to share that North Buncombe Middle School is offering after-school counseling for students who may benefit from extra support. Middle school can be a time of many changes and challenges—students may feel stressed, anxious, or simply need someone to talk to who will listen and help them navigate it all.
This program provides a safe, confidential, and supportive space where students can talk about what’s on their minds, learn healthy coping skills, and build confidence. Best of all, it’s completely free for NBMS students.
If you’re interested in signing your child up, please complete the registration form below.
We’re proud to provide this opportunity to help our students grow not only academically, but emotionally and socially as well.
Sweet Rewards for Showing Up!
Over 260 students enjoyed a special at lunch on Thursday for having perfect attendance in September.
We’ll be celebrating perfect attendance every month — because Attendance Matters!
Thank You!
Does Your Child Need Support and Tutoring?

Attendance Matters
- Talk with your child about the importance of showing up to school every day.
- Help your children maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Try not to schedule dental and non-urgent related medical appointments during the school day.
- Keep your student healthy. If you are concerned about about a contagious illness, call your school or health care provider.
- If your children must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom.
