Pasadena Unified School District Marks Six Months Since Eaton Fire

Community Resilience and the Recovery Progress

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PASADENA, CA – The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) today marked six months since the start of the Eaton Fire, recognizing the resilience of the community and the progress made in recovery. PUSD Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Blanco thanks California Governor Gavin Newsom for bringing together statewide and local leaders earlier today to highlight ongoing wildfire recovery efforts and the strength of communities working together.

“Six months ago, the Eaton Fire disrupted lives and learning across our district,” said Dr. Blanco. “Today, we reflect on how far we have come, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has stood with us. I want to especially thank Governor Gavin Newsom, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the many other federal, state and local leaders who have supported our recovery and made PUSD a priority. I also want to thank our tireless labor partners, UTP, PACTE, CSEA, and the Teamsters and all PUSD employees for showing up every day for students regardless of their personal situations. We have been amazed by the outpouring of love for our students, families, and caregivers that has been displayed by community volunteers, public agencies, and generous donors. This support has powered our recovery and continues to inspire progress.”

Strong collaboration between PUSD teams, The United States Army Corps of Engineers and public health agencies, has led to all school properties – including Eliot Arts Magnet Middle School – being fully cleared and tested to ensure a safe environment. The district continues to act quickly to protect the health and well-being of all students and employees.

Local partners also rose quickly to meet the urgent needs of the community. Just two days after the fire began, the Pasadena Educational Foundation (PEF) established the Eaton Fire Response Fund. This fund managed an outpouring of donations from across California and the nation. To date, PEF has distributed more than $3 million to support employees, students, and families impacted by the fire. The Foundation’s leadership and generosity have been critical components of the district’s recovery efforts.

“Our community’s resilience and unity have been nothing short of inspiring,” said PUSD Board President Jennifer Hall Lee. “Every member of the PUSD family – employees, families, students, and partners – has played a vital role in our recovery. Together, we are not only rebuilding facilities but restoring hope and opportunity for all.”

In an extraordinary effort, PUSD was able to safely reopen schools just 23 days after the fire, a milestone made possible by the unwavering dedication and coordination of district staff, local agencies, and community partners.

Since the fire, PUSD has also made significant strides across several key areas:

Academic performance has continued to improve, with notable gains in math and English language arts, increased graduation rates, and reduced absenteeism.
The district has expanded early learning programs and enhanced support services for immigrant families.
Emergency housing and financial support were provided for more than 150 employees affected by the fire.
Community partners, volunteers, and donors have provided vital resources, enabling a comprehensive recovery approach.

These efforts and more are documented in the district’s recently released 2025 Community Report, available in English and Spanish: Report to the Community - Pasadena Unified School District. A recent Board presentation, where these accomplishments are also highlighted, can be viewed here.

These milestones signify important progress, though they do not mark the conclusion of the district’s recovery efforts. Many families remain displaced, and ongoing work is needed to restore enrollment and rebuild the community. The district also recognizes that some students and families continue to face hardships due to ongoing challenges related to federal immigration enforcement activities. PUSD remains steadfast in its commitment to support the entire school community as recovery continues.
