Read Across America Update

The Read Across America Event was held at Walteria on March 3. Many families and friends were in attendance during the school day to picnic and read with each other. This has been a long standing Walteria Tradition that we are glad to bring back this year. Thank you to all the families who attended and especially our volunteer readers from the Police Department. Below are a few pictures.

Bicycle Rodeo Update

The Bicycle Rodeo was held this past Wednesday, March 8 after school. Thank you to Bicycle Rodeo Chairman and parent, Mark Redman, for coordinating this important event for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Wildcats. Additional special volunteers included Officer Scott from the Torrance Police Department members from the South Bay Cycling Club, and parent volunteers. Students demonstrated their biking skills and safety knowledge, and enjoyed a bright and sunny day while engaging in a healthy activity. Thank you to all our parents who supported the event by manning the obstacle courses. Bicycle Rodeo awards will be handed out at next week's Monday morning assembly. A few pictures from the event are below.

Amber Haskin, parent of Kaidan Wilder O'Brien, 5th grader

The Walteria Volunteer of the Week is Amber Haskin, our Valet Volunteer. Ms. Haskin volunteers her time every week in ensuring our Wildcats stay safe through being visible in the front of our school. She helps our community by monitoring students as they depart their vehicles, monitor traffic patterns, meanwhile keeping our valet line moving. The Walteria Community is a better place to be through the valet safety partnership. Here are a few words from Ms. Haskin:

1. Why did you decide to volunteer at Walteria?

I saw the morning rush one day while dropping off my son, Kaidan. I asked if they needed help and they did so I helped them that morning. Then they asked if I could come back. I felt I had time so we figured out a day for me and then I was a part of the valet team.

2. What do you love about volunteering?

I love opening the door for all of the kids. Greeting them with a smile and saying good morning. Helping them with their bags and sometimes their projects. It is truly rewarding and a great way to start your day.

3. What is one fun or memorable moment about your volunteer time?
Every morning I do valet is memorable and special to me. To see all of the happy smiling faces and some that look like they just woke up. LOL! It is pure and simple pleasure for me, the kids and the families. Each time after I am done and walking to my car I have a HUGE smile on my face and an overall GREAT feeling!

4. What advice would you give to people considering volunteering at Walteria?
If you want to do something that makes you feel AMAZING you should volunteer. All it takes is a little time but it means so much to the kids. It is a great way to give back. Something so simple but hugely rewarding.
