October 20, 2023

Dear Mary Hogan Families,

We want to thank MESA and all of you for making our Monday morning extra special. MESA put together a delicious and beautiful breakfast for all Mary Hogan staff. It is amazing to feel the love from all of you who donated and made the breakfast happen. It gave us a time to fuel up for the week as well as to find each other and connect first thing in the week, both of which are total gifts. Thank you for all you do to support the teachers and staff at this amazing school. We are so lucky!

Be well,

Jen

A Note about Holidays

Our Family Handbook explains that we do not celebrate holidays (including upcoming ones like Halloween) at school. We acknowledge various holidays and classes may think about general principles behind some holidays - gratitude, caring, community - or we try to tell a more complete story about the holiday (ex. Thanksgiving). We do not celebrate individual holidays at school. We believe that informing students around the celebration of holidays can be the work of schools; however we do not celebrate, decorate, or otherwise condone holidays in classes or as a school. Education is different from celebration.

Please do not send your child in in a costume on Halloween. There will be other celebrations in the year - like Character Dress Up Day - when they will have a chance to dress up in a costume.

We’ve had a wonderful start in music this year, reviewing and practicing routines, and demonstrating ways to be safe and kind. Grades 4 and 5 have used tennis balls to demonstrate rhythm values while listening to music; Grade 3 has learned about repeating rhythmic patterns (“ostinatos”) and improvised on xylophones; Grades 2 and 1 have learned to safely play circle games Let Us Chase the Squirrel and Charlie Over the Ocean. Kindergarten learned their first dance, Shoofly, and have learned to play glockenspiels to the song, Little Bunny Foo Foo.

We have been busy in P.E. building routines and connections. Students in grades 3-5 have been working on collaboration and teamwork with games that challenge them to find ways to solve problems as a group. Students in grades K-2 have been learning to move safely in large groups, use equipment properly and practice important locomotor skills. We are moving into soccer and kicking skills as well as rolling, tossing/throwing and catching games.

Mrs. Schondube's Kindergarten class got out in the woods this week - and other classes are as well - to enjoy and celebrate the changing of weather and leaves. They had a great time exploring and building together.

A Soldier's Life A Soldier's Life

The 4th graders had a chance to hear from reenactors from Ft. Ticonderoga this week. The visitors shared what a soldier's life back in the Revolutionary War era and what tools they used during this time. The visit connected with the inquiry the students have been doing into the different types of government as well as the Declaration of Independence. The visit gave the students more context of the time.

We have students from the Construction Technology class helping to build a shady area at the preschool playground. We also have 7 students from the Human Services classes who are interning 2 times a week for 4-5 hours a week working in preschool through 1st grades. It is so great to have high school students around and helping at Mary Hogan. We are learning from them and they are rock stars to the students.
