Equations in everyday life
Can you figure out how many pieces of candy are in each bag? You can... using equations.
An equation is a mathematical statement that shows that two expressions are equal. They are used in everyday life from calculating distances to measuring ingredients in cooking.
Or consider the following word problem:
At McDonald’s, a six-piece Chicken McNuggets and a medium fries have a total of 602 calories. The medium fries have 350 calories. Find the amount of calories in one Chicken McNugget.
This problem is solved with equations. And it is crucial for our students to practice equations as they are learning how to solve them, and how to formulate them from word problems such as this one above.
You can support your student with this important skill by reviewing the presentation below and requesting a parent packet with games/activities to do at home to reinforce equation solving and writing.
Save the date for Spring Into Summer
Be on the lookout for the invite to our next family night on April 17th, 2005 ~ Spring Into Summer
We are 3/4 of the way into the school year!
- Continue to monitor your child's progress (grades, behavior) via Canvas. Contact Yudy Soro at yudy.soro@cherookeek12.net if you need assistance or have questions about Canvas.
-Report cards will go home on Friday, March 21st. Discuss school progress and/or areas of concerns with your student and what you (the parent) and your student can do to increase academic achievement if needed.
-Continue to remind your student the importance of completing daily assignments on time. Assignments (quizzes, projects, packets, etc.) account for 60% of their grades and students loose 10% of the assignment for each day they are turned in late.
What our students are learning in March
6th GRADE
In ELA ~students are working to read and annotate literary and informational texts and determine the theme/central idea of those texts, as well as write a summary of the texts. Then, students will compare and contrast how two different authors write about the same events and see how their perspectives and details are different or similar.
In Math ~ students are working on Absolute Value, Integers, and Ordering Rational (Positive and Negative Fractions, Decimals, and Percents).
In Science ~ students are learning about heat transfer, layers of the atmosphere and winds on the earth.
In Social Studies ~ students will be finishing up their unit on Latin America and will begin learning about geography in Canada.
GA Standards of Excellence for 6th: ELA Math Science Social Studies
7th GRADE
In ELA ~ students will analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic shape their presentations of key information by emphasizing the different evidence or advancing different interpretations of facts.
In Math ~ students will be finishing up the Geometry unit by finding the volume and surface area of prisms and cylinders.
In Science ~ students will be finishing the Biological Evolution Unit and starting the last unit - on Ecology!
In Social Studies ~ students will be learning about the Africa geography and history of Africa.
GA Standards of Excellence for 7th: ELA Math Science Social Studies
8th GRADE
In ELA ~ Students have just started the unit on narrative fiction. They are analyzing short narrative stories and will end the unit by writing their own narrative short story (fantasy, science fiction or dystopian).
In Math ~students will learn how to identify and apply the properties of integer exponent rules. They will rewrite numerical expressions with exponent equivalent forms for the power-to-power rule, product-of-power rule, quotient-of-power rule, negative exponent rule, and zero-exponent rule.
In Science ~ students will be learning the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on objects and identifying Newton's Laws of Motion.
In Social Studies ~ students will be evaluating how the Boll Weevil, Great Depression, and the New Deal impacted Georgians.
