Principal's Message
Dear Coupeville Elementary Families:
The 2024-2025 school year is off to a great start! It was wonderful to see so many families at our Back to School Night in August. I’d like to thank our fantastic PTA for their partnership, Kapaws Iskreme for donating the delicious ice cream for the event, our community partners for coming out to support our families, and, of course, my entire staff for their hard work in preparation of the event. We hope those of you that were able to come out enjoyed your time on our campus as much as we enjoyed hosting you.
Another opportunity to visit our campus and learn more about your student’s education is coming up via our Fall Curriculum Night, which is scheduled for Thursday, October 3rd, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Please see the flier below. This event supports our district’s strategic plan pillar of connecting with students and families and is an important way to learn about the curriculum we use to offer an engaging academic environment that nurtures and supports student learning.
One way you can support us as a partner in your student’s education is to prioritize their attendance by doing your best to schedule appointments for them outside of school hours and to limit vacations and other events that impact their attendance negatively. Students who have great attendance typically experience less learning loss, have more optimal interpersonal/social skills, and report higher levels of school belonging than their peers with irregular attendance.
We know it’s not always possible to schedule appointments outside the school day, and life events happen, but we appreciate your cooperation in making sure students arrive at school on time and stay for the entire day. I am happy to report that we had an average attendance percentage of over 97% our first week of school. Let’s keep up the great work!
Also, please remember that school breakfast and lunch are free to ALL students for the 2024-2025 school year. Students may arrive on campus as early as 8:40 a.m. Breakfast is served in the multipurpose room (MPR) and school begins at 9 a.m.
If you haven't already, please read and discuss with your student(s) the school rules and expectations provided here. A print copy of acknowledgement went home with your student(s) the first week of school along with an acceptable use agreement. The forms are due back to your student's teacher(s) by Friday, September 27, 2024. A digital Quick Reference Guide to Coupeville Elementary School was also shared previously and is available here in English and here in Spanish. Thank you to everyone who has already turned in their forms and a special shout out goes to Mrs. Boin's 4th grade class who was the first class to turn in all of their documents. Way to go, Mrs. Boin's 4th grade class!
Finally, as we are about to welcome fall, I hope you are able to spend some time outside with your families in this beautiful area we live in! As always, please feel free to reach out should you need any assistance.
Sincerely,
David Ebersole, Principal

Health Room Buzz
Hello CES Families,
We need your help in keeping all of our students and staff healthy. Please keep your student home from school for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever. Keeping your student home when they are sick allows them to rest and reduces the spread of illnesses throughout the building.
Also, please send a water bottle and snacks with your student(s) each day. This helps reduce the number of office visits related to stomachaches and headaches and helps your student be more comfortable.
Reminders:
If your student must take medication at school, please do not forget to bring your student's Authorization for Medication at School Form, along with their medication. These items must be brought in by a guardian. Without a complete and current medication order, we will not be able to accept medications or administer them at school. We need a new form for each school year.
Please keep an extra set of clothing in your student’s backpack for accidents/spills.
It’s a pleasure taking care of the students at CES.
Thank you,
Maria Summers, RN

District Social Work Coordinator Introduction
Hello Coupeville Families!
My name is Arianna Bumgarner and I am the Social Work Coordinator for all of Coupeville School District. In my position I get to work with all students and families to make sure they have everything they need for their students to be successful while they are here on campus. If you need help with food, clothes, hygiene items, school supplies or any of those types of tangible items - let me know! I have a lot of those types of things in my office at the Student and Family Support Center at the Middle/High School campus and am always happy to set up a time for families to pick up items they may need. If you could use some support with house, state benefits or health insurance, I’m also your gal!
I look forward to meeting all of you as the year goes on!
Sincerely,
Arianna Bumgarner

Constitution & Citizenship Day
Constitution & Citizenship Day is observed annually on September 17th per RCW 28A.230.170. The law requires the study of the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Washington state as a prerequisite for graduation from public and private high schools in Washington state. Additionally, federal law enacted in December 2004 states: "Each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution..." to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787. The federal law is included in Section 111 of Public Law 108-447 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005. The U.S. Department of Education provides additional information about the law.
On September 17th, Principal Ebersole read a special announcement over the intercom letting our students know how the Way of the Wolf ties into Constitution & Citizenship Day. He emphasized how our students can be recognized individually and as part of a group when they practice Way of the Wolf expectations.
Principal Ebersole explained that one way our students are recognized individually is through our paw pat awards, and as a group, through our Best of the Den awards. These awards are given out by our teachers and other staff members that see our students being good citizens of our school community.
On Friday afternoons we conduct our paw pat drawing awards for additional recognition for being great citizens. In our classrooms, teachers provide opportunities for recognition that allows our students to earn special events in their own community classroom.
Prior to leading our students in the Pledge of Allegiance, Principal Ebersole completed his special announcement by providing examples of how our students in each grade level are working on their citizenship in our school community.
In addition, each of our homeroom classes participated in Constitution & Citizenship Day activities on September 17th. Below are some samples of some of the activities that took place at our school.
Mrs. Hiroyasu's 2nd Grade Class
On Constitution Day, Mrs. Hiroyasu's class watched Alexander Hamilton and Preamble videos and discussed the Constitution together.
Mrs. Sherman's 5th Grade Class
Mrs. Sherman's class worked together to come up with their Classroom Bill of Rights. Each group was given one of their classroom expectations from the Way of the Wolf: Be Kind, Act Safely, Act Responsibly, Show Respect, Follow Directions, Participate.
With their peers, they discussed their “expectation” and determined how to make a general, meaningful statement that showed that particular Way of the Wolf. After voting on their final statements, they shared them with Mrs. Sherman.
This slide shows the Classroom Constitution they created together.
Mrs. Wagner's 1st Grade Class
Mrs. Wagner's students agreed to be kind to themselves and others this school year with their friendship pledge.
Mr. Casey's 3rd Grade Class
Ms. Gelston's 5th Grade Class
On Constitution Day, Ms. Gelston's class watched this video and then in groups listed the rights that they believed everyone should have. Once the list was completed, her students looked up the Bill of Rights and compared them to the list they created.
Mrs. Boin's 4th Grade Class
Mrs. Boin's class has ongoing discussions regarding expectations that constitute being a strong global citizen.
