Wessagusset Elementary School Wessagusset Elementary School

March 29, 2026

Dear Wessagusset Families,

Although the weekend brought some chilly temperatures, the sunshine was a welcome reminder that warner days on the way!

It was another busy and exciting week at Wessagusset. Our Grade 5 students completed the ELA MCAS, and Grade 4 students began their testing. We are so proud of the focus and effort our students demonstrated. All grade levels also enjoyed engaging presentations from Mass Audubon. Our students were curious, attentive, and eager to learn. A heartfelt Thank You to our Parent Council for making these enriching experiences possible for our students.

On Friday evening, Wessagusset was filled with energy as families and friends gathered to enjoy our student showcases and performances during Wonderful Wessagusset. Our students’ interests and talents were on full display, from Legos and snowmen collections to singing, dancing, skits, gymnastics, and so much more. It was a wonderful celebration of creativity and community. Congratulations to all of our exhibitors and performers, we are so proud of you. Thank you to the families who joined us for such a special evening!

Looking ahead, Grade 4 will complete the ELA MCAS on Tuesday. As always, you will find helpful tips and reminders for supporting your child during testing included below in the newsletter.

We are also looking forward to Parent/Caregiver–Teacher Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. These meetings are a valuable opportunity to celebrate your child’s progress and discuss their continued growth since the fall. Report cards will be available in ASPEN by the end of the day on Thursday, April 2nd.

We hope you have a wonderful week!

Kind regards,

Mrs. Jango, Principal

MCAS Testing Tips for Families

MCAS testing is an opportunity for students to show all they have learned this year! Your support at home can make a big difference in helping your child feel confident, calm, and ready to do their best.

  • Prioritize a Good Night’s Sleep - A consistent bedtime routine helps students feel well-rested and ready to focus.
  • Start the Day with a Healthy Breakfast - A balanced breakfast (protein + whole grains) gives students the energy they need to stay focused.
  • Be On Time - Arriving to school on time helps students feel settled and ready to begin the day without stress.
  • Offer Encouragement - Simple reminders like “Do your best” and “Take your time” can boost confidence and reduce anxiety.
  • Limit Screen Time Before Bed - Less screen time at night helps students fall asleep more easily and wake up refreshed.
  • Keep Mornings Calm - A relaxed, predictable morning routine sets a positive tone for the day.
  • Stay Hydrated - Don't forget a water bottle because drinking water hydrates the brain and helps students stay focused throughout testing

Focus Treats

Families may send in up to 5 pieces of gum or hard candy for their child on each day of MCAS testing. Please place items in a ziplock type baggie and ensure they are unwrapped ahead of time. This helps minimize distractions and supports a focused testing environment for all students.

Cell Phones and Smartwatches

Cell phones and smartwatches are not allowed during MCAS testing. Students will place these items in their backpacks prior to testing, where they will remain for the duration of the day.

Smartwatches have become increasingly popular, and we want to remind families that both cell phones and smartwatches should be turned off upon arrival to school and kept in backpacks until students leave campus each day, not just during MCAS testing.

Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a focused and distraction-free learning environment.

We are very proud of our students and all the hard work they do every day. MCAS is just one way for them to show what they know. With your support and encouragement, we know they will shine!

Spring Survey Reminder & Opt Out Option Spring Survey Reminder & Opt Out Option

This is a reminder that students will be participating in a Panorama survey again this Spring. The survey asks students to reflect on topics such as emotion regulation, social awareness, supportive relationships, feelings, and belonging, and takes about 20 minutes to complete. Since opt-out forms were collected in the Fall, no further action is needed unless your preference has changed. If you would now like your child to opt out, please complete this Google Form by Friday, April 17th.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support,

Tanna Jango

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Weymouth Cultural Council (WCC), a local agency funded by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. Each year, the Parent Council collaborates with teachers and staff to select a meaningful program to kick off the school year and apply for the WCC grant. For the past two years, we’ve focused on bringing enriching STEAM experiences to our students.

More information about what each grade level will be learning is included below, we can’t wait for students to enjoy this hands-on experience!

March 15, 2026

Dear Wessagusset Families,

We hope you had a wonderful weekend. It looks like we are in for a chilly week ahead.

We are still collecting family photos for our “Heart of Wess” board. If you would like your family to be included, please send in a 4 x 6 photo. On the back of the photo, kindly write your student’s name and teacher’s name. We are excited to celebrate and showcase the families who make up our Wessagusset community!

Tuesday is both Picture Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Many students may choose to wear green to celebrate. If your child plans to wear green, you may want to consider sending an alternate colored shirt for their photo to avoid any “ghosting” effects caused by the green screen used for pictures.

Please know that this date was not the first choice for Picture Day. Due to the photography company’s availability and our school’s scheduling needs, this was the only option available. We appreciate your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience.

Have a wonderful week!

Kind regards,

Mrs. Jango, Principal

Mrs. Reinhart, Assistant Principal

Principal's Feedback Survey Summary

Thank you to the families who participated in the Principal's Feedback Survey. I truly value hearing from you, and your feedback helps guide my work in supporting our students, staff, and school community.

Overall, families shared many positive comments about the welcoming environment at Wessagusset, including appreciation for morning greetings, school events such as Open House and concerts, and the dedication of our teachers and staff. Many families also noted the importance of maintaining the traditions and strong sense of community that make Wessagusset such a special place.

Families highlighted several strengths they see in my leadership this year, including approachability, responsiveness to questions, commitment to student success, and a focus on safety and structure that helps students feel secure and ready to learn.

Families also shared thoughtful suggestions for continued growth. A common theme was a desire for more detailed communication, including:

  • Additional information about what students are learning in classrooms

  • More photos and highlights of student learning and school activities

  • Clear communication about school expectations and procedures

Families also expressed interest in continuing to build strong connections between home and school, including opportunities for family engagement and celebrating student achievements across the school community.

I appreciate the honesty and care reflected in your responses. Your feedback helps us continue to grow as a school community and ensures we remain focused on what matters most, supporting every student’s success and sense of belonging at Wessagusset.

March 8, 2026

Dear Wessagusset Families,

It was wonderful to enjoy a weekend without any snow flurries!

We have been having a lot of fun with our Read Across America book, Chocolate Fever. Each day, a different staff member reads a chapter in a prerecorded video, while in disguise, using a fun filter. This past week, our mystery readers included Gummy Bear (Mrs. Ferreira), The Lorax (Ms. Bliss), The Apple (Mrs. Asmar), Elsa (Ms. Barry), and Princess Potato. Friday's mystery reader will be announced in tomorrow's morning message.

After listening to the daily chapter, students receive a ballot to guess who the reader was. All correct responses are collected, and one student’s name is drawn to become an Assistant Principal with Mrs. Reinhart for a portion of the day. The student Assistant Principal joins Mrs. Reinhart during the morning message to reveal the mystery reader and announce the next day’s Assistant Principal. They also accompany Mrs. Reinhart on rounds throughout the building. We still have seven more chapters of fun ahead!

Congratulations to Mrs. Kelly’s kindergarten class for winning last week’s ST Math Challenge! We will continue to announce a winning class each week throughout the month of March. Keep up the great work, Wessagusset students!

Have a wonderful week!

March 1, 2026

Dear Wessagusset Families,

Happy first day of March! We’re hoping the old weather proverb holds true that March comes in “like a lion” (with today’s light snow) and goes out “like a lamb” with milder days ahead.

We will keep the Principal’s Survey button below available for one more week. Thank you to everyone who has already taken the time to share thoughtful feedback. It is appreciated!

New in March

Chromebooks Staying at School (Grades 3–5)

Beginning Friday, March 13th, student Chromebooks for grades 3–5 will remain at school each day to support classroom learning and ensure devices are consistently available for instruction.

This shift will help us prepare for our upcoming MCAS online assessments, ensure devices are fully charged and ready for daily use, and reduce the likelihood of lost or damaged equipment. It also aligns with the districtwide transition planned for next school year, when student Chromebooks at the elementary school level will remain at school.

Please return your child’s Chromebook charger to school no later than March 13th. If you prefer to send the charger in earlier, you are welcome to do so. Once the charger is received, your child’s Chromebook will begin staying at school from that point forward.

Thank you for your partnership and support as we make this transition to keep technology accessible and ready for learning each day.

Wonderful Wessagusset - March 27th

Wonderful Wessagusset is coming Friday, March 27th! This is an after school, parent supervised, evening event. The night consists of a Hobby Showcase from 5:30-6:15pm followed by a Talent Show from 6:30-7:30pm. Keep an eye out early this week for an email including a flier and a QR code to sign up and obtain more information.

Grade 5 Families

This fall the Weymouth School Committee updated Policy JF: School Admissions to require a verification of residency for students in Grade 5. Families of students in Grade 5 will need to re-establish residency in Weymouth before transitioning to the Maria Weston Chapman Middle School next year. This procedure will enable our district to maintain accurate residency and registration data while confirming continued enrollment eligibility. More information can be found here: Gr. 5 Residency Verification

Required proof of residency documents must be submitted between January 12, 2026, and May 29, 2026. Failure to complete residency verification by May 29, 2026 may affect your child’s enrollment, and they may not have a schedule or be able to participate in school activities at the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
