Remote Learning Days: What You Need To Know Remote Learning Days: What You Need To Know

Starting in 2026, WCSD will implement Remote Learning Days on regularly scheduled days where schools are unexpectedly closed (e.g., due to inclement weather). Below are the general expectations for Remote Learning Days.

What to Expect on a Remote Learning Day:

  • Instruction is Asynchronous: There will be no live instruction (teachers will not hold live Google Meet sessions). Students will have assignments to complete throughout the day.
  • No Make-Up Day Required: Remote Learning Days are counted as regular school days and are not required to be made up at the end of the school year.
  • Staff Availability: All school staff, including teachers, counselors, nurses, and computer technicians, will be available to support students and families via email during the regularly scheduled school day. Staff are expected to respond to emails within 60 minutes.

Profile of a Zephyr Spotlight: Whitehall High School Profile of a Zephyr Spotlight: Whitehall High School

Incorporating the ten traits of the Profile of a Zephyr is foundational to each building in the Whitehall-Coplay School District. Each month, we will highlight a specific trait and how students throughout the district are exemplifying what it takes to be a successful Zephyr.

Collaborative

Our Whitehall High School chorus members perfectly exemplified the Collaboration tenet of the Profile of a Zephyr through their participation in the Lehigh County Chorus Festival. By joining voices with students from across the county, our Zephyrs demonstrated the ability to listen, adapt, and unify into a single, harmonious ensemble. Under the collective leadership of various choral directors, they proved that great achievements are possible when individual talents are blended toward a common goal. This experience showcased not only their musical skill but also their commitment to teamwork and community spirit.

Zephyr Zoom In: Whitehall-Coplay Middle School Zephyr Zoom In: Whitehall-Coplay Middle School

Here at Whitehall-Coplay School District, our classrooms are buzzing with energy as students take on hands-on projects, collaborative learning, and creative challenges. From STEM experiments to artistic endeavors, the spirit of "We Are Zephyrs" shines through in every lesson, reflecting our pride and commitment to excellence.

Recently, our 6th and 8th grade art classes had a special recognition as their art was selected to be part of Lehigh University's Joy of Education Art Show. Their pieces were displayed in the College of Education to celebrate the work of local student artists. Our art teacher, Mr. Noah Borgman worked with 6th graders to create Color Theory Mandalas. He worked with our 6th grade Zephyrs to express their learning of color theory with mandalas that represent primary and secondary colors with color themes of their choice. They learned about the history of mandalas and their significance to ancient cultures. The art pieces displayed by our 8th graders were a Realistic Portrait project. Mr. Borgman worked with the artists to develop the portraits using graphite and photographs. They were able to measure, draw, and render the forms necessary to create realistic portraits of themselves or persons of their choosing. All visitors to the art show have raved about the joy it brings those who witness it.

Weathering The Storm: WCSD Grounds and Transportation Embody Teamwork Weathering The Storm: WCSD Grounds and Transportation Embody Teamwork

When the recent snowstorm blanketed the Whitehall-Coplay School District with heavy snow followed by a wave of extreme cold, our Maintenance and Transportation teams rose to the challenge. While many community roads remained nearly impassable, our maintenance staff was on-site nearly around the clock to ensure the campus remained safe and accessible throughout the storm. Once the snow stopped, the full team mobilized to clear over 6 miles of roadway, over 10 miles of sidewalk, 20 acres of parking lots, and endless nooks and crannies around the 143-acre campus. The team even prioritized athletic areas so practices could resume by Tuesday night. The sheer volume of snow created a unique hurdle, requiring the use of dump trucks to haul snow to remote areas of the campus to clear space for safe travel and parking.

The success of this cleanup was a result of communication and collaboration. The transportation team brought in drivers and mechanics to clear every bus and ensure the lot was "ready to roll" for our students. District mechanics were on hand to troubleshoot mechanical issues and even stepped in to operate dump trucks to haul snow away. By braving the elements and working through the peak of the storm, both teams ensured that, despite the record-breaking weather, the campus was ready.

Start Spreading the News: WCMS Studio Enjoys a Unique Opportunity Start Spreading the News: WCMS Studio Enjoys a Unique Opportunity

A group of students from the Middle School got an incredible opportunity to experience the inner workings of a real TV studio on Friday, January 23. Through the Good News Media Experience, the students explored careers in broadcasting, journalism, podcasting, and media production. Throughout the two-hour experience, the students were shown introductory videos about specific media careers, toured a studio and production rooms, and worked directly with professionals from the PBS 39 team to learn, prepare, and film pieces of the morning announcements for WCMS. As part of the experience, students were able to choose to work in one of a number of different roles in the production process. Some of the roles were:

  • On-Air Talent
  • Camera Operator
  • Floor Director
  • Audio Director
  • Director
  • Technical Director
  • Teleprompter

After the tour and filming, the students were treated to lunch and a Q&A session.

Megan Pierre

I am excited to introduce myself and join Whitehall High School as one of the Assistant Principals. Prior to joining the administration team at WHS, I worked as a School Climate Coordinator at Pennbrook Middle School. Previous to that I taught U.S. History and American Government throughout the North Penn School District. Throughout my years working as an educator, my goal has always been to focus on student success, belonging, and growth.

I am a Rutgers University graduate with my BA in History and a Montclair State University graduate with my Master’s degree in Secondary Education Social Studies. I received my principal certification and accreditation through Delaware Valley University. I am also currently working towards my Ed.D. at Immaculata University, in Educational Leadership.

It is an honor to step into this new role and serve the Whitehall-Coplay School District. I look forward to partnering with families and staff to build a vibrant future for all students. I am a human focused educator where student success and empowerment is at the heart of what I do. I believe my ongoing commitment to open communication and academic excellence will help continue to foster success at Whitehall High School.

I am thrilled to join hands with this already vibrant school community to foster an environment where academic excellence and student well-being go hand in hand.

Zephyr Elementary Welcomes a Familiar Face in a New Place Zephyr Elementary Welcomes a Familiar Face in a New Place

It is with incredible excitement and a deep sense of pride that I write to you today as the new Principal of Zephyr Elementary School. While transitioning in the middle of the school year is unique, I am eager to hit the ground running and serve our district in this new capacity.

As a proud graduate of Whitehall High School, my roots in this community run deep. My educational journey began at Kutztown University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education and Social Studies. I later followed my passion for school leadership to Delaware Valley University, where I earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership.

My professional heart has always been in the classroom and in the support of our students' diverse needs. My career began as a middle school special education teacher, a role I held for seven years before transitioning to high school to teach social studies. For the past four years, I have had the privilege of serving our district as an Assistant Principal at the high school.

My wife, Katie, is a teacher at Gockley Elementary, so our dinner table conversations are often centered on the success and growth of Whitehall students. We are also the proud parents of our daughter, Liv, and our son, Deacon. When we aren't in school, you can usually find us going to parks, on a field or in a gym—most of our time is spent playing or watching sports (Go Birds and Phils!)

My goal as your principal is to ensure that Zephyr Elementary provides a rock-solid foundation for your child’s future. I believe that our students can begin to master the tools for lifelong success. My vision emphasizes:

  • Goal-Setting: Teaching students to look forward and aim high.
  • Identifying Strengths: Helping every child discover what makes them unique and capable.
  • Reflection & Self-Improvement: Encouraging a "growth mindset" where mistakes are simply opportunities to learn.

I am a firm believer that we cannot do this work in isolation. It takes a true partnership between home and school to help our children thrive. I look forward to meeting you at drop-off, during school events, and throughout the community.

I am honored to lead this school and work alongside such dedicated educators and families. Together, as one community, we will raise these young Zephyrs to be confident, kind, and ready to take on the world.

Jeffrey Pukszyn, Athletic Director

I am incredibly honored to serve as the Athletic Director for the Whitehall-Coplay School District, a community that has become my professional home over the last few years. My journey in athletics has always been driven by a passion for building programs that succeed both on the scoreboard and in the classroom. Having previously served as Whitehall’s Assistant Athletic Director and a salaried substitute teacher, I’ve had the unique opportunity to see our student-athletes' dedication firsthand.

Before stepping into administration at Whitehall, I spent over two decades at Moravian University, where football and leadership were the center of my world. I wore many hats there—from Defensive Coordinator to Head Coach—and was humbled to be named the 2015 AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year. My coaching philosophy has always been about more than just X’s and O’s; it’s about mentorship. I’ve stayed committed to helping students manage their time and academic goals, ensuring that "student" always comes first in the "student-athlete" equation.

On a personal note, my connection to the game of football goes back to my own days on the

field. I played defensive tackle for Moravian back in the mid-90s. The ultimate "full circle"

moment for me came in 2019 when I was inducted into the Moravian University Hall of Fame.

That experience taught me the value of hard work and grit—lessons I strive to pass down to

every student wearing a Whitehall jersey today.

Christopher Ohocinski, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Public Relations

In 2016, I arrived at Whitehall with the intention of assisting for just a few weeks. Almost ten years later, that 'temporary' role has evolved into a career as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Public Relations. I began my career in healthcare as a young adult working in the high intensity environment of St. Luke’s Level I Trauma Center as an EMT and ER Tech. This was an experience that deeply shaped my approach to healthcare and passion for helping others. After graduating from East Stroudsburg University with a degree in Athletic Training Sports Medicine and working across the Valley, I found my home here at Whitehall where I lead the Sports Medicine Team.

Beyond Sports Medicine on the sidelines, I bring a unique background in digital media to our district. Having managed social media marketing and YouTube content for a global fitness brand with millions of subscribers and also developing a platinum selling online fitness program, I now channel that energy into the Zephyr Athletics accounts and our Digital Scoreboards. Our social media accounts are currently reaching ~20,000 community members monthly, so if you're not already be sure to follow us!

When I’m not at a Whitehall game or in the athletic training room, I’m likely playing guitar, lifting heavy weights, meal prepping, or planning my next snowboarding trip out west. I live with my fiancé, Bryn, and our golden retriever, Asher. As the “sports guy”, most people are surprised that I never watch professional or college sports in my free time. This is because I am fiercely passionate and truly support one team and one team only…the Whitehall Zephyrs. #ZephyrTough

I have also taught at the high school level during my 19 years in Bethlehem. I have taught a variety of levels of Spanish - exploratory, Spanish 1, 2, and 3, as well as Heritage Spanish 1, 2, and 3. I earned a Master's in Education in Classroom Technology through Wilkes University and am two courses away from earning my Masters of Arts in Spanish Linguistics from New Mexico State University.

Why did you feel that joining the Whitehall-Coplay community was the right choice for you?

I wanted to be able to be more present for my daughter during her time as a Zephyr as well as be able to support and give back to the Whitehall-Coplay community in a variety of ways.

What aspects of Whitehall-Coplay have impressed you most, so far?

The support I have received from my colleagues has been incredible! The most unique experience so far was being a part of the Run, Hide, Fight safety training. There are so many differences, but so far they are all positive. I feel like I am truly going to love it here.

Zephyr Engine Room Zephyr Engine Room

Looking for an update on what's going on with our Zephyr Athletic teams? Then you've come to the right place! Take a look at all of the incredible things our athletes are accomplishing.

Swimming

East Stroudsburg South was tough competition last week, the Zephyrs put up a good fight but unfortunately came up short for that meet. The Dieruff Huskies were next on the schedule, and the Girls and Boys teams both won!

Last week was a big week for the swim team, hitting a goal they set out to achieve at the beginning of the season which was to double the wins this season compared to last season and both the girls and the boys achieved this. The Girls are 9 - 3 the Boys are 4 - 8 The Swimmers of the Week who are recognized for their hard work are Kendall and Jaz.

The final Swim meet is this Friday against Moravian Academy. Coach Bailey had this to say for the upcoming week “Moravian Academy is a tough competitor so Whitehall needs to have a big week at practice, and bring 100% effort to get some additional qualifications for districts.” Huge shoutout to Kendall Bashore for qualifying for 3 district events, the 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, and also Johnny Stinner qualifying for 50 free.

Wrestling

What an incredible Wrestling season we have had this year, with so many highlights it’s getting tough to keep up. Their record is 13 - 2 and ranked 7th in one of the toughest districts in the country. Last week the boys put up the 2nd most points all season against Bethlehem Catholic who are the previous State Champions. After that match was a dominating performance against Pocono Mountain West and Stroudsburg to finish off the regular season.

Coach Cunningham had this to say “What a week! The team has shown incredible grit and determination in competition and in preparation. I am extremely proud of the hard work and steady improvement all season. We are 13–2, with both losses to teams ranked in the top four in the state. We qualified for District Duals once again, Congratulations to the team.”

On top of that we have seen some incredible individual achievements. This season

Kade Pascoe has 101 Wins and counting!

James Hopkins has 110 Wins, and still counting!

And our returning State Champion Wilmont Kai has racked up 136 career wins and is looking for more! In addition to that, we had the privilege this week of announcing his commitment to The University of Nebraska where he will continue to wrestle at the highest collegiate level.

Girls Basketball

Last week the girls had a tough game against Northampton, which the K-Kids won 46 - 29, the Zephs rallied soon after and beat William Allen at home for Senior Night in a close, back and forth game which ended with the Zephyrs on top 32 - 27. Before the game we honored our Seniors.

Lyneida Otanez

Jaylene Wilson

Kylie Isabella

Hailey Peters

Coach Middleton “The Girls have battled through so much this season, we have a record of 7 - 13. There is still a chance for playoffs, a lot things need to go right for that to happen. We are playing hard for our seniors, and looking to end the season with some momentum for next year. We are going to try to get some new faces in the mix, to get some of our younger players prepared to step into the rolls of our departing seniors. Shouting to a new Freshman face getting some varsity playing time, Kayla Matthews who is looking to fill some big shoes for us over the next few years.”

Boys Basketball

Coming into the last week of the regular season with a record of 9 - 11, and a league record of 7 - 7. Coach Jones put it best “We’ve been grinding away all season since the beginning, clawing back from an 0 - 5 start, we haven’t given up. The guys are showing up each day, and practicing hard, it’s because of their dedication we are still keeping this season alive, and are going to continue to fight.”

The Zephs had to win BIG in the final stretch, if they won 2 of the last 3 games of the season they would make districts. If they will all 3, they make leagues too! First they drove to Allen and upset the Canaries 54 - 37, then they upset Central Catholic 54 - 48 at home Friday which was another HUGE win where Jack Lloyd was on fire and scored 23 points. A win on Monday will set the Zephyrs up for an exciting post season shot at both titles. Need to give a shout-out to our Senior Team Captain Sudge who is leading the team with 16.6 pts game.

Zephyr Athletics Inducts Hall of Fame Class of 2026 Zephyr Athletics Inducts Hall of Fame Class of 2026

On Friday, January 23rd, our community gathered to honor the legacies of four remarkable individuals who have left an indelible mark on our athletic programs. In a special ceremony held just before the tip-off of the boys' varsity basketball game, the District officially inducted the Class of 2026 into the Zephyr Athletics Hall of Fame.

The atmosphere was electric as students, alumni, and families cheered for these legends of the game. Each inductee represents the pinnacle of dedication, sportsmanship, and the competitive spirit that defines what it means to be #zephyrtough.

We are proud to recognize the following honorees for their outstanding contributions and achievements:

  • Rick Bowman

  • Kourtney Cunningham

  • Dean Kriebel

  • Elizabeth (Powell) Dietrich

Congratulations to our new Hall of Fame members!
