PreK - 4 FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT AT HCS: 1/16 from 6-8 pm
We welcome Pre-K–4 students and their families/caregivers to join us for this free family movie night event! Students are voting for the which film to watch. The choices are: Moana 2, Lilo & Stitch (2025), The Bad Guys 2. We’ll post which movie wins via our social media accounts so make sure you are following us @HCSPiE
Refreshments and a concession stand will be available (donations welcome), so grab a snack, bring your cozy vibes (and chairs if you'd like!), and enjoy a night out with friends. Our HCS Principal, Tim Trevithick and Assistant Principal, Alexis Kelly will be joining us from 6-6:30 to lead a walking-talking tour of the PK-4 wings of HCS for any parents/caregivers who are interested and will welcome any questions you may have. Yes, your kids can stay in the flex space for the movie while you're on the tour:) See you there!
If you're interested in helping with future Movie Nights (set up, concessions, post-movie cleanup), please send an email to hcspie@cvsdvt.org

HEAD LICE UPDATE
Dear HCS Families,
We are beginning to see cases of head lice at HCS and want to share information to help families identify, treat, and prevent the spread.
Head lice are spread through direct head-to-head contact. Common situations include sleepovers, some sports, and other out-of-school activities where children are in close contact for extended periods of time.
Please talk with your child about the importance of not sharing hats, brushes, helmets, or other items that come in direct contact with the head. We also encourage families to communicate with one another if head lice are suspected or confirmed, as early disclosure often leads to quicker resolution.
Weekly head checks at home are a great way to catch lice early. If you suspect or find head lice, please contact your school nurse for guidance. Nurses are also happy to check students by individual request if you are unsure what to look for.
Head Lice Facts
-
Anyone can get head lice, regardless of hygiene.
-
Head lice do not carry disease, though scratching can cause secondary skin infections.
-
Lice cannot jump or fly; they spread through direct head-to-head contact.
-
Lice can live for 1–2 days on pillows, furniture, stuffed animals, or clothing.
-
Head lice do not live on pets, and pets do not spread lice.
Ways to Prevent the Spread of Lice
-
Do not share combs, brushes, towels, hats, barrettes, sports uniforms, or pillows.
-
Avoid head-to-head contact with anyone suspected of having head lice.
-
Keep long hair tied back, braided, or pulled up.
What to Look For
-
Frequent scratching, especially at the back of the head near the neck.
-
Nits (lice eggs): pearly gray and firmly attached to the hair shaft near the scalp (they do not brush off like dandruff).
-
Adult lice: about the size of a sesame seed.
-
Lice are more active at night, which may cause difficulty sleeping.
Caring for Head Lice at Home
-
Use an over-the-counter lice treatment (such as NIX or RID).
-
These products are often more effective when left on for 20–30 minutes, even if instructions indicate a shorter time.
-
-
Some treatments require a second application 7–9 days later.
-
Do not shampoo or condition hair before treatment; wait 1–2 days after treatment before washing.
-
Rinse treatment with warm (not hot) water, preferably over a sink.
-
Check for live lice 12 hours after treatment. If lice are still present, contact your healthcare provider.
-
Wet-combing with a fine-tooth lice or flea comb can help remove lice and nits. This process should be repeated regularly.
Preventing Re-Infestation
-
Check everyone in your household for lice.
-
Treat anyone who shares a bed with the affected child.
-
Teach children not to share personal items that touch hair.
-
Household cleaning tips:
-
Soak hair tools in hot water (at least 130°F) for 10 minutes.
-
Wash clothing, bedding, towels, jackets, and hats used in the past 2 days in hot water and dry on high heat.
-
Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for 14 days.
-
Vacuum carpets, mattresses, couches, and upholstered furniture.
-
When Can a Student Return to School?
Students found with head lice may remain in school for the rest of the day.
Students must be treated before returning to school the following day.
Please have your child check in with the school nurse:
-
On the day they return to school, and
-
One week after treatment.

THE CVSD EARLY EDUCATION LOTTERY IS NOW OPEN FOR 2026-2027!
The CVSD Early Education Program is now accepting applications for a random prekindergarten lottery drawing for the 2026-27 school year. This lottery is for an opportunity to enroll in one of our school-based classrooms which runs 4 partial days per week. Our school-based prekindergarten classrooms are 5 STARs, licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children in an inclusive setting. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS).
Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Children who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2026, who are not eligible for kindergarten, and live in the communities of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston are eligible to enter the lottery. Families who are selected for the lottery and choose to enroll their child in a CVSD program access their Act 166 publicly funded prekindergarten funds for the school-based program.
All applications must be received by February 5, 2026, and are located on the CVSD Early Education website under PreK Enrollment. Paper applications are available upon request.
For additional information, questions about our program, or any concerns about your child’s development, please visit our website or contact Director of Early Education, Erin Gagne at egagne@cvsdvt.org. Our Early Education team is also available for developmental screenings in the areas of communication, social-emotional development, motor skills, adaptive development, and cognition. More information about an Early Multi-Tiered System of Supports is also available on the website.
