Message from the Principal and Assistant Principal
Dear Hillcrest and Pine Avenue Families,
At Hillcrest and Pine Avenue, we believe that character is just as crucial as academics—and this month, we're focusing on Responsibility through our Character Strong lessons during student Social Emotional Learning Class.
Responsibility means doing what needs to be done, even when it's hard or no one is watching. For our students, this might look like turning in homework on time, cleaning up after themselves, or using kind words even when they're frustrated. These small choices build trust, independence, and confidence—skills that will serve them for life.
You can help reinforce Responsibility at home in simple, powerful ways:
Model it. Let your child see you following through on commitments, owning mistakes, and managing tasks—even when it's inconvenient.
Give age-appropriate responsibilities. Whether it's feeding a pet, packing a backpack, or helping with dinner, kids thrive when they feel trusted to contribute.
Celebrate effort, not just outcomes. When your child remembers to bring home their folder or apologizes for a mistake, acknowledge it. These are wins worth celebrating.
Use natural consequences. If homework is forgotten, it's okay to let your child experience the result. Responsibility grows when children connect actions with outcomes in a safe, supportive environment.
At school, we're weaving Responsibility into daily routines, classroom expectations, and our behavior frameworks like SOAR and CHAMPS. We're helping students understand that being responsible isn't about being perfect—it's about being accountable, trying again, and learning from every experience.
Thank you for being our partners in this work. Together, we can help our children grow into capable, caring individuals who take ownership of their actions and their learning.
Your partner in education,
Dr. Konowalow and Ms. Jaeck
