SB29 Reminder for ALCS Families

July 31, 2025
Dear Avon Lake City Schools Community,
Summertime chugs along, and I hope you’re enjoying your time away. Once again, the first day of school for students in grades 1st through 12th is Tuesday, August 19th. Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten students will return on Thursday, August 21st. Still time to stay relaxed and continue recharging! It’ll be a Whole New Ball Game this school year, with exciting advancements and important steps towards our building construction project and elementary school renovations.
Friday, August 8th is ALHS Football’s Season Preview and Community Night!
Join our school family next Friday night, August 8th from 4 – 8 p.m. at Memorial Stadium for the annual Season Preview and Community Night! This free community event will feature a preview of our upcoming football season and includes performances by the marching band, food trucks, a candy dash, games, along with three scrimmages for the Freshman, JV, and Varsity football teams throughout the evening. Come on out and let’s enjoy a great evening together!
Attention All Student-Athletes! HUDL Informed Consent and Release Form
Student-athletes have undoubtedly become familiar with and likely already use the HUDL online software and services company that provides tools and resources for video analysis and communication. This year, and going forward, ALCS will require both the parent/guardian and student athlete to sign a consent and authorization form in order to participate with the HUDL platform. The Athletics Department is responsible for keeping track of who has authorization. Please return this signed form either through your team’s head coach, or the Athletic Director as soon as possible. You can find the Consent and Release form on the Forms page under the Students/Parents main navigation tab of our website, scrolling down to HUDL Informed Consent and Release, or by downloading the attached document below. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Friendly Reminder Regarding SB 29 Requirements
As we approach August 1st, I wanted to provide a friendly reminder to parents and families of two amended SB 29 requirements for the upcoming school year, revolving around notice of tech contracts/partners, and information regarding student monitoring. Relative to Tech contracts/partners, amended SB 29 requires districts to provide annual notice to parents regarding the technology programs that will be used in the upcoming school year.
Annual Technology Provider Contract Notice
Ohio law requires school districts to provide parents and students annual notice regarding curriculum, testing, or assessment contract(s) with any technology providers the school district has entered into affecting student education records, as defined by the laws requiring this notice.
As a result, the Avon Lake City Schools is notifying you that the District has contracts with the following technology providers. ALCS families can also view the full Student Data Privacy Annual Notice on the district's Technology Department homepage (under SB29 Compliance Information) or by downloading the notice listed below.
The ALCS prioritizes the privacy and security of student information. If you wish to inspect any of the District’s technology provider contracts, or if you have questions or concerns about any District program or activity that potentially affects student education records, as defined by this law, and/or allows a technology provider access to such student education records, please do not hesitate to contact Scott Wuensch, Director of Technology, at scott.wuensch@alcsoh.org or (440) 933-6290.
General Monitoring Notice
In addition, The Avon Lake City Schools is dedicated to providing students with seamless access to technology for educational purposes within the school environment. To that end, the District may issue students “school-issued devices” during the school year. These devices include hardware, software, devices, and accounts that the District, acting independently or with a technology provider, provides to an individual student for dedicated student use.
Ohio law generally prohibits a school district or its technology provider from electronically accessing or monitoring (1) the location-tracking features of a school-issued device; (2) the audio or visual receiving, transmitting, or recording feature of a school-issued device; and (3) student interactions with a school-issued device, including but not limited to the keystrokes and web-browsing activity. However, general monitoring is permitted in certain circumstances, and in any year a school district elects to implement general monitoring, parents of enrolled students must be provided notice of such general monitoring.
As a result, the District is notifying you that it implements general monitoring when:
If you have any questions about the District’s general monitoring practices, please do not hesitate to contact Scott Wuensch, Director of Technology.
Thank you again for your continued support and partnership with the Avon Lake City Schools. Hope to see you next Friday at the Season Preview and Community Night!
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Joelle M. Magyar
