A Message from Principal Cutone
September 12, 2025
Hello HES Caregivers,
We've had a wonderful week at HES, and it was so special to officially fill our 'Shark Tank' with the arrival of our Integrated Preschool students! It's great to have everyone here.
Safety Reminders
Our drop-off and pick-up car lines are live lines. This means all adults must stay in their cars to keep the line moving safely and efficiently. Please help by having your child's backpack and belongings ready to go. Our staff will be outside to assist them.
The front door is for bus riders and walkers only. To avoid unsafe congestion, please do not park nearby and walk to the front door. If you don't live within walking distance, use the car line at Door 15 (near the playground, with entry on Sisson Road). The only exception is for preschool families who are picking up a PreK student by the gym and then walking to the main entrance to get an older sibling.
A valid Criminal Offender Record Information and Sex Offender Record Information (CORI/SORI) is required for all adults who volunteer or participate in events during the school day. To be ready for field trips, volunteer opportunities, and even lunch with your child, please stop by the office to fill out a form if you haven't already. The process takes about one week, and the form is valid for up to three years.
Student Attendance
Student attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of academic achievement, emotional well-being, and future success. When students attend school regularly, they gain access to instruction while building relationships, developing social-emotional skills, and preparing for life beyond the classroom.
We know some absences are unavoidable, especially for fever or vomiting. However, for mild cold symptoms, we encourage students to come to school. Often, once they are here with their friends, they feel much better, and their regular attendance is so important for building strong academic and social skills.
Thank you for your partnership in making HES a safe and welcoming place for all of our students. Please never hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need support for you and your Shark!
All my best,
Christie

Call the Attendance Line If Your Shark Is Absent
Per the handbook, if your child is unable to attend school, please enter the absence in PickUp Patrol and/or call our designated attendance line, 617-848-0115, as early as possible. Soon after arrival, our office staff begins to call the caregivers of absent students if we haven't already heard from them. This is important, as we want to ensure that all students are safe. Your phone message with the reason for the absence is all we need. While an email to the teacher is helpful, it sometimes doesn't make its way to the office staff. Thank you for your help!
Welcome New Staff Members to the Shark Tank!
We are excited to introduce our new Instructional Assistant, Heather Belmonte!
Heather was inspired to work in schools to help each new generation learn and grow. Reading is her passion, and she loves teaching children new sounds and words and watching as they have a "light bulb" moment. The sense of belonging and inclusion in the Harwich Elementary/Monomoy community is what drew her to the school.
Outside of school, Heather enjoys watching football, playing volleyball, going to the beach, and reading thrillers. She has two dogs: a white dog named Marshmallow, whose nub tail is a little toasty on the end, and a new Australian Shepherd mix puppy named Moose. If she weren't in education, her dream job would be to own a doggy daycare.
When asked what she's most looking forward to this school year, Heather said she is excited about watching the students grow and learn.
Welcome Back, Jake the Snake
At 28 years old, Jake has been a beloved student at HES for the last 23 years! Ms. Keith's third graders always enjoy having this special classmate for the year.
Staff Shoutouts Wanted
Our faculty and staff are amazing – and we want them to get recognized for the great work they do! Each month, we will feature a staff member in our Staff Shoutout series. Staff members can be nominated by students, parents/caregivers, and colleagues for outstanding positive contributions to our schools using the simple form at www.monomoy.edu/staffshoutout.
Parent Teacher Organization
Seeking Parent Volunteers for School Council
Harwich Elementary is looking for parent volunteers to serve on our School Council for the 2025–2026 school year. The Council plays an important role in supporting our school by:
-
Helping to set educational goals consistent with state standards and local policies
-
Identifying the educational needs of our students
-
Reviewing the annual school budget
-
Assisting in developing our School Improvement Plan
The Council will meet four times during the year for one hour after school hours.
If you are interested in serving, please submit a brief email of interest to either of our PTO Presidents, Jill Petell and Julia Maker, @ harwichpto@monomoy.edu. Parent representatives will be chosen through an election by all HES parents, organized by the PTO.
We encourage you to consider this opportunity to make a difference in our school community!
