WELCOME BACK TO "SCHOOL"!

To my fellow Social Studies educators - I wish there were the right words to describe how impressed and in awe of what you are doing each day as this strange school year kicks off. I know that no matter how you have started this year - face to face, virtual, hybrid, delayed, etc. - you are doing work that is important and unquestionably difficult. I hope that this upcoming three day weekend is one where you can take a moment and breathe.

Please do not hesitate to ever reach out with questions, concerns, ideas or training needs.

From Headline to Homework: Teaching Current Events Through Anti-Bias Framework | Social Studies

Are discussions about Black Lives Matters making their way into your classroom? Do you want to bring up topics in the news like immigration, COVID-19, and the 2020 election, but are not sure how? Between overheard conversations and social media feeds, young people are regularly exposed to news featuring controversial issues that involve bias, hate, and social justice. They want to be part of the conversation and we should encourage their engagement. Are you concerned that these discussions will backfire and deteriorate into arguments, discord, and less understanding?

Looking Back and Forward this Fall

Looking Back and Forward this Fall

It may seem like the world’s greatest understatement to observe that much has happened since schools shuttered and moved online in early 2020. Our communities have weathered (and continue to weather) multiple overlapping crises and conflicts, as well as come together in solidarity, support, and resistance. As educators return to the classroom—many through virtual means—there are a great many events to recollect and reflect upon. What follows is a list of some of the themes that we are sitting with from the last several months, as well as links to articles sharing perspectives that educators might consider as they prepare to greet students and colleagues.
