Partnership Program
The first year of the program will consist of 17 English Language Learners and 20 Native English speaking students that will work together to build academic and social skills as well as celebrate our growing diversity.
They will meet once during a six day cycle utilizing their WIN (What I Need) block. Students will be given structured tasks that will help them learn from and about each other.
It is our hope that this program will create future mentors for incoming ELL students and accelerate achievement for those for whom language is sometimes a barrier. All students in the program will also be well on their way to becoming trilingual which will help create global-minded citizens. Thank you to the students and parents of participating students, and to Mr. Brenner and Mrs. Bohorquez, who have helped with the creation of this wonderful opportunity.
Guest Speaker Varsha Bajaj coming to FBMS on 11/3
Varsha Bajaj was born in Mumbai, India, and came to America to get her Master's Degree. When she first came to the United States, she had read familiar words in books like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, and that Mark Twain's writing had introduced her to things that made a foreign country seem a little less scary. She said, “Such is the power of story. It crosses boundaries and cultures. My adjustment to this country was facilitated by my knowledge of the language and my awareness of the culture through books, movies, and music.” It's no wonder she is an accomplished author!
We thank the PTO for helping to fund this visit! Stay tuned for pictures of this visit next Friday. Some pictures below are from activities related to summer reading and our theme this year, "Differences Make Us Stronger."
Term I Ends on 11/4
Late buses are available M-Th should your child want to coordinate staying after with a teacher for extra help. Below are the bus stops for both North and South bus. With your home address in mind, please identify whether your child is a "South" or "North" bus rider so that he/she knows which bus to take. These are not the normal bus routes your child takes in the morning and afternoon to get to and from school, so your child needs to know how to walk home from the late bus stop.
Report cards will be available on ASPEN on Thursday, November 10th at 3pm. Opportunities to sign up for parent-teacher conferences will also take place at this time. Information forthcoming.
BUS TRANSPORTATION & SAFETY
Please know that each student is assigned to a bus for the purposes of transportation to and from school. Some of our students walk, some of our students obtain a parent ride, but most of our students take one of 16 busses that come to and from our school each day.
Please know that we cannot accommodate requests to ride different busses. Students can only ride a bus to which they are assigned. Bus seats are reserved for students who are coming to and from school only. Our busses do not function as public transportation or Gatra. We need to make sure every child who is assigned to bus transportation has bus transportation. Thank you for your understanding.
Additionally, any student who is going to be picked up during the school day, and dismissed from school, must be listed in the child's emergency contacts. We do not release children to people who are not already identified in ASPEN as emergency contacts. If you wish to have your child be released to another adult, a note must be received at the front office in writing. The person will also be required to show a driver's license.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep your child safe.
Mock Elections in Social Studies
This week, some of our 6th and all of our 7th grade students participated in the state-wide JFK Library sponsored Student Mock Election to exercise one of our most fundamental rights: voting. The National Student Mock Election is a program designed to teach students about the power of voting.
474 student voted-with the results:
Geoff Diehl : 62% of votes
Maura Healey: 38% of votes
A big thank you to Social Studies teacher Mrs. Clifford for organizing this event!
Students, pay attention to Election Day on November 8th to see how your votes compared!
