KIBSD Native Ed & Migrant Ed Program Updates
A Message from Angie Hietala and Katrina Stewart, Directors of Federal Programs
Federal Programs Director Update – October 2026
Dear Families,
We are excited to introduce ourselves as the Directors of Federal Programs for the Kodiak Island Borough School District. While we are both new to these roles, we each bring years of education experience and a strong personal connection to the Kodiak community.
Katrina was born and raised in Kodiak and taught English at Kodiak High School. She is also a KIBSD parent. One of her children graduated from Kodiak High School, and her other child is currently a junior at KHS. Having grown up, taught, and raised her family in Kodiak, Katrina brings a deep connection to our schools and community.
Angie was born and raised in Minnesota and has worked in education in Florida, California, and Alaska. She has called Kodiak home for the past 14 years and has three children currently attending KIBSD schools, a fifth grader at Main Elementary and seventh and eighth graders at Kodiak Middle School.
As both educators and parents, we care deeply about the students and families we serve. Federal Programs provides important resources and opportunities to help meet the diverse needs of students across our district, and we want families to understand and feel connected to those resources.
Most importantly, we believe our work is stronger when families are part of it. We look forward to getting to know you, listening to your perspectives, and working together to support our students and our Kodiak community.
Warmly,
Angie Hietala
