Happy New Year!

Happy 2023 Hallinan Families!

The Innovation Lab is hustling and bustling as we start the new year! Kinders are creating inventions that solve a problem that a certain type of weather brings, 1sts are working on story re-telling and puppet creation, 2nd graders decided what kind of learner they wanted to be as they demonstrate their knowledge of the water cycle by creating either a movie on Apple Clips OR building the water cycle out of Makers Materials! 3rd grade is spending this week learning about and building shelters for extreme winter weather, budgeting and much more! 4th graders are wrapping up their final projects for our Video Mania unit where they focus on creating tours of a famous location (Green Screen), re-telling a myth or legend (Stop Motion) or animating a Scientific Process using an animation program called Wick! Finally, 5th graders are working on coding interactive games! They will use Scratch, a user-friendly coding program as well as having the option to include Makey Makeys (a tech that utilizes conductivity to function) into their games!

I am so happy to be back in action with your kids -- Their creativity, collaboration and imaginations inspire me every day and make my heart smile!

Wishing you a great year!

Love and hugs,

Nickie Doran

New Projects! See Details Below!

K-5 Projects Beginning on January 3rd:

  • K: Weather Wonders! Students start the week exploring different types of weather, graphing weather and examining weather inventions. Then, students will create a plan, blueprint and build a prototype of an invention that solves a problem that a specific type of weather may bring! The creativity goes wild on this project and I can't wait to see what these kinders create!

  • 1st: Shadow Puppets and Story Retelling First graders explore shadows and light through puppet creation and story retelling! We start the week exploring shadows and light with LEGOs and notice how we can shrink or enlarge shadows. Students then pick a fictional book on Epic with their partner that they will retell with puppets! Students explore what makes a great shadow puppet and create their own inspired by the characters in their stories! We end the week with a whole class puppet show and share our story retells with our families on Seesaw!

  • 2nd: World of Water As a preface to our upcoming erosion/landform unit, 2nd graders start this project exploring the water life cycle and bodies of water. Students then create a plan of how they will show their knowledge of the water cycle. They can choose to build/create the water cycle OR use Apple Clips! We will share our work with families via Seesaw on Friday!

  • 3rd: Winter Weather Shelters Ooooo this is a GOOD ONE! 3rd graders start this unit exploring a small city called Utqiagvik in Alaska and comparing the weather to Portland Metro Area. They will create a data table with their teams to help with weather comparisons. Following this, students will create a blueprint to create a shelter that protects people from extreme weather. Students will be given a budget and all items will need to be "purchased" from the Materials Market in the lab! At the end of the week, we will test our shelters with wind (dryer) and heavy snow (bean bags) and compare who created the most sustainable shelter for the least amount of $! It is so much fun and a wonderful, multi-faceted projects that really utilizes all components of STEM!

  • 4th: Video Mania Round III 4th graders will begin their FINAL rotation of our Video Mania unit and will explore their 2nd station! Each STEM week, classes will be split into 3 different sections that focus on a specific tech/media for them to explore. Students will spend their week in STEM exploring Greenscreens and DoInk (app), Stop Motion or Wick (animations)! Each station will have a specific focus for their movies, whether it be touring a famous location (Greenscreen), animating a scientific process (Wick Animation) or Retelling a famous myth or legend (Stop Motion). It is so much fun to watch teams plan, film, execute and edit their movies! I can't wait to start this next round!

  • 5th: Make(y) a Game 5th graders dive into the coding world as we explore Scratch, our coding program to design interactive games! These will be shared at our STEAM Night, so pressure is on to make something truly outstanding! Students will start the week exploring Makey Makey, one of my favorite technologies of all time! Makey Makey's use conductivity to function and possibilities are truly endless with this tech! We will do some conductivity tests and explore how Makey Makey functions, then complete some basic game-creation tutorials via Scratch. Teams will then make a plan and create their own interactive games! I love this project because it has so many wonderful components! Students will code, plan, explore conductivity concepts, collaborate, create and so much more!

ATTENTION 5th GRADE FAMILIES! Architects in Schools Coming to Hallinan!

Dear Hallinan Families with 5th grade students,

A very exciting opportunity is quickly approaching! I (Mrs. Doran) applied for a program called Architects in Schools and was accepted! All 5th graders will experience this in-house architect residency project in STEM January 23rd-February 10th!

In the AiS program, all students learn:

  • That design is all around us and we make decisions every day that affect our environment.
  • How the subjects they study in school apply to the real world outside of school.
  • That design of the built environment affects and is affected by human behavior.
  • That there are many people who create the spaces in which we live, learn, work and play, and some examples of their jobs (i.e. architects, landscape architects, structural and civil engineers, contractors, urban planners, etc.).
  • Skills that help them work better in groups, communicate their ideas, and understand that designing and building spaces is a process as well as a product.

The AiS program is not trying to create “mini design professionals.” Although, some students realize through their participation in AiS that they’d like to grow up to design and build spaces, all students participating learn important skills through lessons that include cooperation and planning, connect to the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and help to gain a better sense of how school relates to the “real world.”

With the help of local professionals, our 5th graders "home" projects will take 2-3 weeks to complete. We can't wait to dive into this experience and I am so excited to share all the things with you!

There is only 1 thing needed from you -- Please complete the image release forms for AiS as soon as possible! Thank you for your help in making Hallinan such a special place to learn!

Kinder Coding
Kinders explore robotics and coding for their first time! Students start at one station that focuses on a specific robot or coding skill and rotate to each station throughout the week!
2nd: Hanging Clay Sculptures
2nd graders explore Tinkercad for the first time and 3D print their own unique animal stamp! We then use our customized stamps to create BEAUTIFUL hanging clay sculptures!
3rd: Makey Makey an Instrument
3rd graders are introduced to Makey Makey, one of my absolute FAVORITE tech tools! These systems are plugged into computers and function based on coding and CONDUCTIVITY! Students use these tools to create conductive instruments!
4th: Video Mania
Click the button to view our Padlet of all our video projects thus far!
5th: Seasonal Constellations
Teams create a project that shows either: 1. How the constellation moves through the sky or 2. The brightness and variation of stars within the constellation. Teams have a variety of project options! options!
