Mustang Update
We have a big weekend here at Valley Heights! On Friday night we will host Alma-Wabaunsee in a first-round playoff football game! The coaches have had a very successful season with a record of 6-2 to date and we want to wish them the best of luck as we enter post-season play! Sophomores Emma Warders and Langston Gray will be running at the state cross country meet this Saturday at the Wamego Golf Course. Let’s go Mustangs!! The 2A Boys race is scheduled to start at 10:35 am and the 2A Girls will get underway at 12:20 pm. We want to wish all of our coaches and athletes the very best this weekend!
I was checking the calendar this week and found something that made me realize how fast the school year was moving along! When we come back to classes on Monday, November 3rd, we have 17 class days until Thanksgiving break and then only 15 more until Christmas break and, most importantly, the end of the first semester! This includes the days set aside for November Professional Development and our 9th-12th End-of-Semester Finals. It is important that our students pay attention to due dates and stay ahead of the game when it comes to tests, classroom projects and AR reading assignments! This time frame is also filled with family and church events as well as the start of the winter activity season so staying focused is a must!!
Congratulations goes out to senior, Avery Stevenson who was named the WIBW Athlete-Of-The Week! This is quite an honor! We will also be watching for and reporting on any post-season honors earned by our athletes!
Our 9-12 band, under the direction of Mrs. Jasmine Colle, participated in the Bandtober Fest hosted by Chapman High School. This is a first for our band, but one of many other activities she has scheduled for her music groups! The students did a great job and earned two awards for their marching skills. They earned a “Outstanding” rating and the Esprit De Corps award. I am a big fan of music and the fine arts in general and we are very proud of the band’s performance at this competition. Well done!
We have monthly Focus and Administrative Goals that we are using this year! For example, our October focus was Curriculum and our November focus is Instruction. Obviously, instruction starts in the classroom. I have spent a lot of time in our classrooms for evaluation purposes but also just to see what is going on in our building. I have been very impressed with what our staff is doing on a daily basis. Their lessons are well thought out and creative! Our students are engaged and it is very evident that learning is the top priority within the classroom. We are blessed to have the staff we have in place at Valley Heights! They are all top-notch!!
Have a great week and Go Mustangs!

Progressive Panel
On October 23, 2026 the Valley Heights juniors performed a Progressive panel for English. To prepare, students chose a progressive era reformer to write a research paper about. For the research paper they had to find out what they did to change society, if they changed any laws, and about their childhood and education.
For the panel, juniors argued with others about certain topics that the person that they dressed up as would agree or disagree with. Leah Steinfort dressed up as Jane Addams, who created the Hull House and was also the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Leah shared, “Our panel went well. We had a lot of debates, some good and some bad but overall it was fun.” Juniors learned a lot while working on this entertaining unit.

🎓🎓🎓SENIOR CORNER🎓🎓🎓
Senior of the Week - Lindsay Gray
Make the Most of Everyday
Lindsay Ilene Gray was born September 30, 2008 to Brian and Jill Gray. She has two siblings, an older brother Logan, and a younger brother Langston. Lindsay has been involved in the All School Play, KAYs, Basketball, Cross Country, and Softball 4 years, Track 3 years, FACS 2 years, and Band and FLBA 1 year. She has had many leadership roles within these activities including Softball Captain 2 years and Class Vice President 1 year. Some non-school activities she is involved in is officiating softball and baseball throughout the year and helping at the University Christian Church in Manhattan.
Lindsay’s favorite quote is “You can’t add days to your life but you can add life to your days.” This is her favorite quote because it is a simple reminder to keep making the most of what you have and control what you can control by seeking joy in the little things. One memory she will never forget is her junior year of cross country, when the team hitched a ride with a local farmer so they wouldn’t have to run the entire 6 miles at practice. Lindsay’s ideal Friday night is hanging out with friends and chasing the sunset. Something you may not know about her is that she can shred the ski slopes. An accomplishment Lindsay is most proud of is qualifying for state track and also sticking with cross country for 4 years when she dislikes running.
The people that have had the biggest impact on her life are her parents, Brian and Jill. “They have taught me how to be resilient, open-minded, respectful, and everything I know today! They influenced my views of life through traveling; seeing how different people live has helped me to view life differently.” Some advice Lindsay would give to the underclassmen is to make the most of the time you have and to not get caught up in the little world of high school because there is so much more out there.
After high school, Lindsay plans on attending a 4-year college to major in Nursing. In 10 years, she sees herself happily working a full-time job. When Lindsay leaves Valley Heights, she wants to be remembered as a person who would always help out when needed and also being the reason someone smiles.
