Screen Savvy Screen Savvy

Dear Families,

A common topic of conversation among families with young children is screen time—how much is appropriate, should I let them watch a movie, and which apps are best. With so many options available, it’s understandable that parents are looking for guidance.

As with many aspects of parenting, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. You know your child and your family’s needs best, and you have the ability to decide when and how screen time fits into your daily routine. For those looking for practical ways to approach it, here are a few strategies that many families find helpful:

  • Start with a family conversation. Establish clear expectations around when and how screens are used, including time limits and screen-free parts of the day.
  • Be intentional about connection. Plan activities that encourage interaction and play, helping balance screen use with meaningful time together.
  • Try a “tech break.” Consider setting aside a regular time—such as one day each week or a stretch during the summer—to unplug and reset as a family.
  • Give screen time a purpose. Whether it’s relaxation, learning, or entertainment, being mindful about why screens are used can help create healthy habits.

The digital world is a lasting part of our lives, but with thoughtful choices, it can be used in ways that support your family’s values and well-being.

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity…
—Ephesians 5:15–16
