An Update from the Principal
Hello MHS Community,
We hope you had a fantastic break and holiday. Happy New Year! We look forward to students returning to MHS and our continued work together to learn and make connections. The first half of the year had many positive moments and events, and we are super excited about what 2024 will hold for us as a community.
As a reminder, there are about four weeks left in Semester 1. Now would be a good time to check in with your student, review the Power School grades, and identify some short-term goals to finish up the semester. On January 25 and 26th, MHS will hold Make-up Days for courses where teachers will call students back through an adaptive scheduler for retakes or make-up work. More information will follow as we get closer to the dates.
We hope you have a great start to the year and are well and safe. Please let us know how we can assist you.
Sincerely,
Jason
Take Care of yourself, Take Care of Others, and Take Care of This Place.
Quick Reminders:
- MHS Peer Tutoring is Back! Solons complete this FORM if you want to sign up for tutoring assistance.
- Hello Juniors and Seniors- This is your friendly reminder that I will be reviewing grades for privileges eligibility on January 8th. You must have a 3.0 or above in all courses in order to maintain or re-apply for privileges. If you have below a 3.0 in any courses, you will be scheduled to meet with me, a work lab will be added to your schedule, and you may lose the option to sign in and out during unscheduled times. If you're worried about a class, you can always come talk to me! Best- Emily
- Hello 10th Graders!
It's that time of year when we start looking ahead to reviewing applications for ON-CAMPUS student privileges for 10th graders. Here are the details you need to know:
- Applications are due January 8. If you miss this deadline, your next opportunity to apply for student privileges is February 5.
- Eligibility = 3 or above in all classes.
- On Campus Privileges = Option to have a free block in place of a work lab. You cannot leave campus. You are still expected to attend TA for Solon Block when not scheduled by a teacher.
- After receiving your application, your grade 10 teachers will review and approve or deny your application based on your performance in their class. For example, if you have a 3 in their class but they have significant concerns about removing you from a worklab, your application may be denied.
- If your application is approved, your privileges will go into effect with the start of Semester 2 on Monday 1/29. You will receive an email indicating if you have privileges or not.
What happens if I earn privileges, but then become ineligible later in the semester?
- Eligibility checks happen on the following dates: 2/5, 3/11, 4/8, 5/6, 5/28. Students get a 2 week reminder prior to these dates. If a check is coming up, and you know you have a grade below a 3, the absolute best thing you can do is communicate with Emily!
- If you become ineligible, you will be scheduled into Solon Blocks with the teacher of the course in which you are below a 3, for about 2 weeks. If you do not bring your grade up within this time frame, a work lab will be added back into your schedule.
Privilege Applications will be available in the Main Office and in Guidance.
Questions? Ask Emily, Ms. Sabo, or your school counselor!
MHS wishes Anne Watson the best as she moves on the the Vermont State House for the rest of the year. MHS has hired a substitute who worked with Anne and covered Physics and Engineering to complete the rest of Semester 1 for all of Anne's classes. And for Semester 2 MHS Science teachers will be covering Anne's classes.

MHS PIE
MRPS Partners in Education (PIE) represents the intersection between the Montpelier Roxbury Public Schools and the citizens of our community. Our schools are a critical part of our community and affect everybody. We hope to ensure that our kids get the best school experience possible, and that our schools continue to be a resource for all community members. Each of our district’s four schools has an independent caregiver group, and PIE is the non-profit fiduciary organization that connects and supports the four groups. The mission of PIE is to “support the caregiver groups of Montpelier Roxbury Public Schools through fundraising, administrative structure and advocacy.”
The three main projects that PIE has focused on are: (1) The Family Support Fund (which provides direct financial support to families in our school district); (2) faculty/staff appreciation breakfast in the Spring, and (3) the Fall Festival fundraiser that takes place on the Statehouse lawn. In addition, PIE is available to support each school group based on their individual plans. We seek ways to enhance the educational experience for the students and indeed the entire community.
MRPS PIE is seeking your help. We are actively seeking board members, and we hope to formalize a high school caregivers group. Please join us for our next board meeting on January 4th, 5:30-6:30 at the MHS library, and contact Victor Guadagno, our Executive Director for more information, director@mrpspie.org.
IMPORTANT SURVEY FOR MHS STUDENTS ONLY- From Amelia Woodard
Through my Community Based Learning course this semester I partnered with VPIRG to create a survey for high schoolers. VPIRG is lobbying for funding for more education and outreach about the climate workforce, since Vermont requires a solid workforce to meet its energy and climate goals. My part in this process was to make a survey that asks students a bit of information about what they value about jobs (like the wage, job training, health insurance, etc). Please take a moment to complete the survey.

Extended Learning Opportunities
Jan. 9 Youth Opportunity Forum
I'm writing from the Vermont Council on Rural Development as we work to gather input from everyone we can reach — all ages and all backgrounds — on the challenges and aspirations to inform the Youth Opportunity Initiative.
You’re invited to our next forum, a forum for youths and adults of Central Vermont to share their perspectives on January 9th from 5:30–7:00 pm in the cafeteria of Northfield Middle & High School for some free pizza and interesting discussion of the bright spots and challenges for youth in our state. This will be the last of our 7 regional forums across the state to come together and share their ideas on topics such as education, job training, community connection, youth voices, mentoring, and more. This initiative is led by the Future of Vermont Action Team and facilitated by the Vermont Council on Rural Development. You can learn more about the initiative here: https://www.futureofvermont.org/youth-opportunity-initiative
Please join us and share this invitation widely through your school’s network. We'd love to have youth, parents, teachers, staff, board members, services providers, and others join us for this open conversation.
Thanks so much for your consideration and time.
Best,
Lauren
