Our kindergarten friends are enjoying building forts and lounging in the snow Our kindergarten friends are enjoying building forts and lounging in the snow

Dear Families,

The snow has added a good deal of excitement to the week! If you did not receive a call about Thursday’s delay, please let Rachel know, so we can ensure all of you get the information in a timely manner. Also, a reminder about winter clothing: please send in snow pants and a jacket, hat and mittens, as well as a change of clothing. Children play outside everyday unless the temperature is below 00 (feels like), so having winter gear at school is really important.

December 10, 1:00-3:00 - after care for students: Please be sure to let Rachel know if your child/ren are staying and what their pick-up plan is.

FOWE news/requests: Each December students have the opportunity to hand-make simple craft projects as gifts for family and friends. This cherished tradition began at Weybridge Elementary over 30 years ago and is called "Gifts for Giving."

This year Gifts for Giving will be on Monday, December 22 from 8am - 2:00pm.

If you'd like to volunteer, you can sign up here: Gifts for Giving volunteer sign up

FOWE is also seeking one volunteer to help the team install our ice rink. Exact date TBD. If you are interested please send an email to fowe2018@gmail.com. No special skills needed, just enthusiasm! And... maybe warm gloves for setting up in the chill!

A request about exchanging gifts among students: We ask that any gift exchanges among students not occur at school. Please find a way for that to happen at another time and place. Thanks so much.

Lunch help: We need lunch help next week Thursday and Friday. Please look ahead for dates in December and January as well and email me or sign up directly on the calendar if you can help out. Thanks so much.

Please email me cjohnston@acsdvt.org or call if you have any questions (802-545-3301).

Warmly, Christina

From the School Nurse: Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Information

The VT Department of Health is reporting a significant rise in pertussis (whooping cough), a very contagious respiratory disease that often affects school-aged children. We are not aware of any cases in ACSD, and hope the information below will help prevent and treat any cases that occur.

Symptoms & Treatment: Early symptoms look like a common cold (runny nose, low fever, mild cough) and usually appear 5-10 days after exposure. Later Symptoms can include severe coughing fits with a “whoop”, vomiting during/after coughing fits, difficulty sleeping, struggling to breathe, and rib fractures. Early treatment is crucial to prevent severe symptoms and shorten illness. Students/staff diagnosed with pertussis must complete 5 full days of antibiotics before returning to school; without antibiotics, they must stay home for 21 days from the start of the cough.

Spread & Prevention: Pertussis spreads easily through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. Help prevent illness by staying up to date on Tdap/DTap vaccines, washing hands, covering coughs, and keeping students home when sick. Good rest, nutrition, hydration, and time outdoors also support overall health.

For questions, contact your school nurse or healthcare provider, and visit ACSD’s illness guidance or www.healthvermont.gov/whoopingcough for more resources.

A message from H.O.P.E

HOPE in Middlebury wants to remind families that we run a free Holiday Shop to support gift giving for kids. Parents with income of up to 200% of the federal poverty level are encouraged to make an appointment to visit and select new toys, games, gadgets, books, etc for their children, birth to 18. We also offer a family gift to each household – kitchen items, linens, and more. To reach HOPE, visit https://www.hope-vt.org/ or call 802-388-3608
