5 Things to Know Weekly Update
October 12, 2026
Dear Colleagues,
At last --- some rain and cool weather for a couple of days. The rain will let us know if the roof repairs we’ve done recently will hold up, and the cool comes just in time for Transfer Week and HBUHSD College Night on 10/14. All the transfer events are on the flyer below – the main event is the Transfer Fair on 10/14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Do what you can to let students know about it so they can talk to reps from transfer colleges!

Also on 10/14, our next art show, Polyphony, opens, featuring artists of Asian descent. “Polyphony” means multiple sounds or voices, and the exhibition will reflect the many ways in which Asian artists express themselves.
And – you guessed it – on 10/14, the District will be offering UndocuAdvocate Professional Development Training to better serve and support our undocumented and mixed-status students. The training will be from 9-11 am, so please attend if you can.
It's also the last week of Latiné Heritage Month, and there are a couple of fun events planned including Lotería today at noon. See the flyer below for more info.
BTW, we (including Jeanette Adame and Christina Ryan-Rodriguez) did have a great time at Drag Bingo last week. Many thanks to Daniel Le and our entertainers for a fun event and a great message about empowerment and self-expression. The event was part of Pride History Week, which culminated in the OC Pride Parade last Saturday – thanks to those of you who participated! Here are a couple of photos of the bingo action:
Today, some of us will be at the first meeting to provide input for the next District strategic plan. Look for communications from your District Consultation Council representatives so that you can have input, too. The timeline is to have a draft plan by Spring 2027.
My week includes a budget retreat at GWC with Chancellor’s Cabinet, a breakfast at CSU Fullerton for community college presidents/chancellors, and a long overdue eye exam so I can get new glasses! Hope to “see” you all on campus.
We will once again be participating in the Great ShakeOut this Thursday (10/15) at 10:15 a.m. This is an international earthquake preparedness drill that GWC and the District have participated in for several years. The drill will include a campus-wide evacuation, so please be prepared to participate!
Our Building and Floor Marshals will help guide everyone to their designated assembly areas, and you can recognize them by their orange reflective vests and hard hats. If you're not sure who your Building or Floor Marshal is, or where to go during an evacuation, now is a good time to find out!
