by Kara Lawler

Dear parents and families,

Last Friday, I donned my brightest green blazer and headed into the office. On the way, my daughter, Maggie, commented on it. I excitedly exclaimed to her, "It's March 1st! It's time for green!" She looked at me, and much to my dismay, she announced that it was still February.... While February is the shortest calendar month of the year, it is the longest month here at Grier School. With extreme temperatures, sickness of all sorts, and cloudy skies, February is always a month I'm happy to see pass us by. I'm relieved that it is finally March!

March always seems like a month of possibility to me, as the snow melts and the thaw begins. Mary Oliver, in her poem, "Worm Moon," talks about March in this way:

Worm Moon - Mary Oliver

1
In March the earth remembers its own name.
Everywhere the plates of snow are cracking.
The rivers begin to sing. In the sky
the winter stars are sliding away; new stars
appear as, later, small blades of grain
will shine in the dark fields.

And the name of every place
is joyful.

2
The season of curiosity is everlasting
and the hour for adventure never ends,
but tonight
even the men who walked upon the moon
are lying content
by open windows
where the winds are sweeping over the fields,
over water,
over the naked earth,
into villages, and lonely country houses, and the vast cities

3
because it is spring;
because once more the moon and the earth are eloping -
a love match that will bring forth fantastic children
who will learn to stand, walk, and finally run
over the surface of earth;
who will believe, for years,
that everything is possible.

4
Born of clay,
how shall a man be holy;
born of water,
how shall a man visit the stars;
born of the seasons,
how shall a man live forever?

5
Soon
the child of the red-spotted newt, the eft,
will enter his life from the tiny egg.
On his delicate legs
he will run through the valleys of moss
down to the leaf mold by the streams,
where lately white snow lay upon the earth
like a deep and lustrous blanket
of moon-fire,

6
and probably
everything
is possible.

Everything really is possible. As spring returns, we will turn our attention to the wonders of the season. With that, we will celebrate many events, including our graduation. Please see the information below about graduation, and do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions.

Also, please remember that re-enrollment contracts and deposits are due on March 23. Both must be in for students to schedule classes or pick dorm rooms.

Enjoy Spring Break with your daughters.

My best,
Kara

Sonnet II by William Shakespeare

When forty winters shall besiege thy brow

And dig deep trenches in thy beauty’s field,

Thy youth’s proud livery, so gazed on now,

Will be a tattered weed, of small worth held.

Then being asked where all thy beauty lies—

Where all the treasure of thy lusty days—

To say within thine own deep-sunken eyes

Were an all-eating shame and thriftless praise.

How much more praise deserved thy beauty’s use

If thou couldst answer "This fair child of mine

Shall sum my count and make my old excuse",

Proving his beauty by succession thine.

This were to be new made when thou art old,

And see thy blood warm when thou feel’st it cold.

Academic Updates

Marking period three formally ended on February 20th; however, due to delays and student illness, students and teachers were given an extension until February 27th to complete and grade missing work. Marking period three grades will be finalized and published on March 4th.

Spring break begins at the end of Friday, March 6th. Honors and AP students may be assigned additional coursework over break. Please ensure that you have checked with your student that they complete this work.

Course Registration 2026-2027

Course registration for the 2026-2027 school year will begin in April. Students must have their enrollment contracts in to the business office before they are allowed to register for classes. March has come quickly, although winter weather has stayed cold until the recent rains washed away the remaining snow from Grier's campus. The faculty at Grier are preparing for the break and the trips that they are offering, and all of the competitions and events that come after throughout the spring. Following break, they will continue with classroom activities that help the students prepare for finals, AP exams, and many Math, STEM, and creative writing and art competitions and performances. Each year the faculty help to facilitate many different opportunities and trips to help the students test themselves and showcase their skills as they continue to be challenged and grow at Grier.

Senior Class Rings Senior Class Rings

We are very excited to offer a senior class ring this year! The classic ring features a timeless design, very similar to the class rings our graduates had decades ago. Featuring a genuine jade center, the ring is set in antique gold. With "Grier School" around the bezel, the inside of the ring allows for custom engraving with your daughter's initials and class year. Our motto, Sana Mens in Corpore Sano, is also engraved inside. Please find the information attached with three options for the gold and your customization preferences. Josten's will handle the ordering and payment but reach out to Kara Lawler with any questions. Kara has sizers in her office if students would like to verify ring size.

Greetings from the Athletic Department,

As our winter season comes to an end, we can confidently say it has been our best ski season yet. For eight consecutive weeks, our girls hit the slopes with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, challenge themselves, and most importantly, enjoy time together. The snow conditions were ideal, allowing for some truly perfect runs. Beyond the exceptional conditions, what made this season truly special were the memories created and the camaraderie built along the way.

We are equally proud to celebrate outstanding seasons from our Varsity Fencing and Archery teams. Both teams demonstrated focus, discipline, and remarkable sportsmanship throughout their competitions. From intense bouts on the fencing strip to steady precision on the archery range, our athletes represented Grier with excellence. Their dedication, consistent practice, and teamwork truly paid off, making this a winter season to celebrate across all programs.

Congratulations to our athletes and coaches on a job well done. Go Foxes!

As we pack away our winter gear, we are excited to head outdoors and welcome the energy of spring sports.

Coming Up:

  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Running Club

Thank you to our coaches, families, and supporters who make every season possible. We look forward to another exciting chapter this spring!

By Dr. Nancy Burke, Director of STEM Education and Science Dept. Chair

February may be the shortest month, but that does not mean that Grier students did not pack in plenty of STEM activities. On February 7th, nine of our students participated in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science regional competition held at Saint Francis University. These students included Emerson P., Margaretta B., Alexandra A., Kherington T., Staicy B., Daniella M., Samantha C., Sophia R.C., and Olympia R. All of these students worked diligently on their projects and should be commended for their efforts. Alexandra A. received a first award at the regional competition for her project investigating the effects of watching short form videos, such as TikToks, on information integration and test performance. Alexandra is therefore eligible to compete at the state level competition in May, held at the main campus of Pennsylvania State University. Olympia R. also received a first award for her project studying the effect of pH on the formation of biofilms by oral bacteria. Olympia also received an additional award from the judges for a perfect score for her presentation, she too will be eligible to participate in the state level competition.

In February 10th, Grier students also participated in the Bio-Olympiad National Exam, these students included Irene B., Samantha C., Cici C., Josie F., Bixie F., Lucy H., Cherry L., Daniella M., Olympia R., and Cici Y. Olympia R. and Cici C. both received certificate of merit awards for scores that placed them in the top 30% of students taking the exam nationally. Great work everyone!

College Counseling Updates

Seniors should be hearing from most of their regular decision schools by the end of March. We invite the seniors to share their results with Mr. Shelton and Ms. Barr so they can be celebrated by the Grier community. As students make their final decisions and commitments to universities, we ask that they please get a sweatshirt or t-shirt from their college for a photo that will be taken on May 1st, which is National Decision Day.

The junior class is wrapping up the group curriculum for college counseling. In the weeks after spring break, students will reach out to teachers to ask for letters of recommendation. They will also finalize their first drafts of their resumes. From mid-April through May, the juniors will move into one-on-one meetings with Mr. Shelton and Ms. Barr. Additionally, junior parents were invited to set up a zoom meeting with Mr. Shelton to discuss college counseling for their student.

Over the spring break, juniors should sit down with their parents to discuss the following:

1. Student college list (12-15 schools on their initial list)

2. Possible majors being considered

3. The cost of college and the families budget and strategies to pay for college.

4. Are there any specific 'hard lines' parents have regarding their student’s college choices?

NACAC College Fair

The NACAC College Fair has been rescheduled for March 24-25th. The junior class will travel to Pittsburgh Tuesday, March 24th to attend the fair and take a tour of Chatham University. We look forward to this wonderful event for the junior class. A list of colleges attending the fair can be found by following this link: https://www.nacacattend.org/26pittsburgh/10470721

Recently, Ms. Lawler, Mr. Shelton, and Ms. Barr have all been reading Dream School Finding the College That’s Right for You by Jeffrey Selingo. Selingo presents an argument for parents to look beyond college rankings to explore schools that offer a better fit for their student rather than a prestigious name. Written in three easy to understand segments, Selingo offers parents valuable insights into finding the perfect fit. Follow the links below to purchase your copy of this book.

Have questions about testing at Grier School? Reach out to Mrs. Hallahan (ohallahan@grier.org) or when school is in session, students may stop by her office—1st floor inside the “Counseling Suite”.

Easter for Eli (EFE) Basket Built Event

  • What is Easter for Eli?
    • “Elias “Eli” Garrett was a loving 3-year-old little boy who lost his courageous and long battle with Non-Hodgkin’s T-Cell Lymphoma on May 7th, 2009, just ten days before his 4th birthday.”
    • As a way to honor Eli’s memory, the “Easter for Eli” nonprofit organization was officially formed in 2015. The goal of “EFE” is to collect Easter baskets to be delivered to children who are hospitalized over the Easter Holiday. Remarkably, within the past eleven years, “EFE” has filled 87,000 Easter baskets and distributed $85,000 in gift cards.
    • For 2026, their goal is to deliver 10,000 baskets and $10,000 in gift cards to children and their families.
  • How is Grier School Helping with “EFE”?
