What will you all eat for lunch? Choose ... in Dakhód’iapi -- the Dakota language.
Grant funds Dakhód’iapi revitalization
Red Wing Public Schools received the Minnesota Department of Education’s Native Language Revitalization Grant for the 2025-2026 school year. Our grant is for the expansion of Dakota language into our elementary schools.
This grant allows us to hire a K-7 language teacher who also is developing curriculum. Perry Fernands is offering immersion programming for Indigenous students in the morning. She will occasionally be visiting all K-7 classes during the year.
Her experience in teaching Dakhód’iapi – the Dakota language – was in a full immersion setting at the University of Minnesota's Dakota Language Nest preschool classroom, as well as teaching adult beginner language classes, elementary field trips, and family day-camps with learners of all ages.
“I'm excited to get the opportunity to teach and develop Dakhód’iapi curriculum for younger students, so that their awareness and exposure to the language will happen earlier on than high school with hopes that they will continue with the language once they reach high school and beyond.”
Red Wing High School offers Dakota I, II, III as one of the World Language courses.
RWPS received this grant with the support of the Prairie Island Indian Bdewakantunwan Community.
Indigenous Education For All integrates Anishinaabe and Dakota cultural, historical, and contemporary contributions into Minnesota’s K-12 curriculum. This initiative ensures students and educators learn about local Indigenous communities, meeting academic standards and addressing educational gaps. IEFA aims to reclaim Indigenous narratives, covering Tribal histories, languages, sovereignty, cultures, treaty rights, governance, socioeconomic experiences, and contemporary experiences of Tribal Nations within Minnesota. Learn more at Minnesota Statutes, section 120B.021, subdivision 5.
Flight Path 2030
Last call for students apply for NCWIT
Did you know that a gender split persists among computer scientists? Data shows that the imbalance currently is 79% male to 21% female in the field.
One component of Flight Path 2030 is to encourage students to consider technology-related careers. The National Center for Women & Information Technology AiC opens pathways into technology careers, celebrating students’ technical aspirations and connecting them to a national network for success. All students interested in computing, engineering, or technology — and who want to support peers facing gender-based barriers — gain immediate access to resources, mentors, peers, scholarship opportunities, and awards.
The AiC Award application window is open now through Oct. 28. Check it out here.

Burnside Elementary School
No task is too high or too tall
Our paraprofessionals fill so many roles at Burnside. They work 1:1 and in small groups with students, monitor the lunchroom, run the crosswalks, escort students around the building, help in classrooms, and are an invaluable part of our team. Here are Miss Amber and Miss Missy performing a lesser-known part of their job description: getting recess balls off the roof!
