The Sheiko Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: January 31, 2025

PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Dear Sheiko Families,
March is Reading Month, and we’ve been having a blast with all of the fun activities! I had the pleasure of reading to Ms. Quinlan’s class—check out the picture! We hope your family has been enjoying the activities from the "March is Reading Month" calendar.
A big shout-out to the 20+ families who have joined me on Zoom to read The One and Only Family from our Pine Tree book series. If you haven’t joined yet, it’s not too late! We’ll continue next week, so grab your book and get ready to read. We’re currently on page 85 if you’d like to catch up over the weekend.
This week, we also celebrated our Laker Leader Ticket Winners with a special pizza lunch as part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program—congratulations to our leaders! Additionally, our fifth graders took a field trip to West Bloomfield Middle School. If you have a fifth grader, be sure to ask them about their visit!
Now for this week’s Big Announcement—our March IXL Challenge is in full swing! Students should be completing at least 30 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of math each week. Those who turn in their completed calendar on April 1st will earn Laker Leader tickets and have the chance to win even more prizes!
Have a wonderful weekend, and as always… Gooooooooooooo Lakers!
In partnership,
Blaine McDowell

SHEIKO COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
Our neighbors in Southwest Detroit need our help. Over 400 homes have been left without gas,
water, heat, electricity and the people and families have been displaced due to the recent
water main break which has flooded their homes.
The community needs:
*Water bottles *NEW socks & undergarments of all types and sizes
*Personal hygiene items: toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner
* Food & Snacks such as: Anything to easily warm up in a microwave. Soups, ramen noodles,
boxes of cereal, bars of any kind. * Diapers and baby wipes
* New or in good shape game boards, puzzles, crayons and coloring books
For the cleanup efforts they would appreciate donations of:
- Gloves: Any kind
- Garbage bags/ Cleaning rags
- Cleaning supplies: ex: Clorox, Bleach for residents in the cleaning stage
- Buckets and mops
- Laundry detergent & fabric softener
- Cleaning wipes – paper towels
We will be collecting items through March 31st. There will be a collection box in the main office. Thank you for helping our neighbors in need!
ATTENTION 4TH & 5TH GRADE PARENTS
We are about to begin teaching sex education with the resource The Puberty Workshop in our 4th and 5th grade classes, taught by your child’s classroom teacher. This program of instruction was approved by the West Bloomfield School District Board of Education. As a parent, you have several rights:
You must be notified prior to instruction on sex education and/or HIV/STI prevention.
You may preview the curriculum and materials by: Attending the optional Reproductive Health Preview meeting scheduled for April 9th at 6:30 pm via Zoom with Amy Quinn, Elementary Curriculum Consultant and SEAB co-facilitator. Please confirm here if you are coming to this optional video preview session.
Those who do not wish their child to participate must fill out the 2025 Updated WBSD Sex Education Exemption Form

Footings are being poured for our new school!
PLEASE BE AT YOUR CHILD'S BUS STOP
Please be reminded that parents/caregivers are expected to be at the bus stop in the afternoon. If there is not an adult at the bus stop, the child will be brought back to school for parent pick up. If a child is returned to school three or more times, this could result in loss of bus transportation, and we don't want that to happen. In addition, students may not walk to a convenience store, for example, and wait for a parent or caregiver. The bus driver needs to see that the parent/caregiver is present. Thank you for keeping all of our Sheiko Lakers safe!
