Welcome Back, Ocelots! πŸ’™πŸ’›

The first week of school is here, and we could not be more excited to welcome our Ocelots back to Oak Creek! Our teachers and staff have spent countless hours preparing classrooms, planning meaningful learning experiences, and making sure our campus is ready for an incredible year ahead.

At Oak Creek, we believe every child deserves a school where they feel known, valued, challenged, and excited to learn. Our entire team is committed to making Oak Creek the very best school for your children, a place where they can grow academically, build confidence, discover their strengths, and create memories that will last long beyond elementary school.

This year, our theme is β€œWhere Legends Begin,” and we know those legends will begin with the small moments that happen each day: a new friendship, a challenge overcome, a goal reached, a teacher who believes in them, and a student who discovers just how much they are capable of.

Thank you for trusting us with your children and for being such an important part of the Oak Creek community. We are grateful to partner with you and cannot wait to see all that our students accomplish this year.

Here’s to an amazing first week and an unforgettable 2026–2027 school year.

Welcome back, Ocelots, this is Where Legends Begin! 🐾

With excitement,

Valerie Harari
Principal
Oak Creek Elementary

First Day of School Arrival Information First Day of School Arrival Information

As we get back into the swing of things, please remember to be patient during the first few weeks of arrival and dismissal at Oak Creek. We will take great care to ensure students get to their dismissal locations safely, but it will take some time for everyone to learn the system. Our processes for arrival and dismissal are not changing, so returning students and families will find them familiar. Again, we ask for your patience and understanding, especially for those who are learning our procedures.

For safety reasons, it is a district-wide protocol on the first day of school that parents will not be allowed to walk their children into the school or classroom.

Kindergarten Parents

  • Kindergarten will have a later drop-off option starting at 8:00 a.m. at the front of the school.

  • Kindergarten students may also be dropped off at the regular time, beginning at 7:00 a.m.

  • Students dropped off at 8:00 a.m. will be greeted by their teacher at the front of the school. Parents will have the opportunity to take photos during this time.

First through Fifth Grade Parents

  • Drop-off begins at 7:00 a.m.

  • Breakfast will be available for students from 7:00 to 7:30 a.m.

  • Car rider drop-off will begin promptly at 7:00 a.m., and students may enter the building at this time.

  • Staff will be stationed throughout the building to assist students in getting to their classrooms and other locations. We are confident it will be a fantastic first day!

First Day of School Dismissal Information First Day of School Dismissal Information

On the first day of school, dismissal will start a few minutes earlier to help all students get home safely, practice procedures, and manage lines.

Orange Tags:

  • Car riders and walkers must have the orange tag given at Meet the Teacher.

  • If a student does not have an orange tag, a staff member will check ID for safety.

  • Families without a orange tag can stop by the front office before pickup to get a temporary tag.

Please note:

  • This will be a longer process than usual. We appreciate your patience as student safety is our top priority.

  • We strongly encourage everyone to have orange tags ready on day one.

  • The adjusted timing is temporary to accommodate our growing campus and ongoing construction.

  • Expect extra wait time during the first few days.

Driving Safety Reminders:

  • Please avoid using your phone while driving through the school zone. Students may be walking, biking, or crossing the street, and your full attention is needed.

  • Drive slowly when entering and leaving campus. Your care and attention help ensure a safe start and end to every school day.

Thank you for helping us keep all students safe and ensuring a smooth start to the school year!

πŸš— Important Dismissal Reminder: Pickup Tags πŸš— Important Dismissal Reminder: Pickup Tags

zoom_out_map

To help us ensure a safe, secure, and efficient dismissal, all families picking up students through car rider, front walker, or back walker dismissal will be required to show an Oak Creek pickup tag before their child can be released.

Each family will receive:

  • 2 full-size printed pickup tags for regular use

  • 3 wallet-size pickup tags that may be shared with grandparents, family members, or other approved individuals who may pick up your child. Please use a Sharpie to write your student’s FIRST NAME, LAST INITIAL, and GRADE LEVEL as large and clearly as possible on each wallet sized tag. This helps our staff quickly identify your student and keep dismissal moving smoothly.

If you did not receive your pickup tags for car, front walker or back walker at Meet the Teacher, they have already been printed for you! Please stop by the front office on Monday between 1-3 pm or visit the Tag Table outside the front office during arrival on the first day of school. Staff will verify your photo ID before providing your tags or releasing your child.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we establish our dismissal routines during the first days of school. These procedures are in place to make sure every Ocelot gets home safely and with the correct person each day! πŸ’™πŸ’›

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

As we get back in the swing of things, please remember to be patient in the first few weeks of arrival and dismissal at Oak Creek. We will take great care in ensuring students get to their dismissal locations, and with that, it will take some time to learn the system. Our processes for arrival and dismissal are not changing, so returning students and families will be familiar with them. Again, please be patient and understanding of those learning our procedures for these times of the day.

Arrival Helpful Tips

  • Students should be ready to exit the car when you pull up to the cone. To help with this, backpacks, lunch boxes, and other items should be in hand so students can exit quickly.

  • There are 10 cones for morning drop off. Please pull all the way up to the next available cone before you child exits the car.

  • To maintain safety, students should walk on the grass once they exit the car.

  • Students should begin unloading from the cars beginning at 7:00. There will be minimal staff at the drop off line at this time so students will need to open their own car doors. Staff or other help will arrive at 7:10 to assist with opening car doors. Any student requiring additional time or support should pull up to cone 0.

  • There is no supervision outside near the cafeteria until 7:00. Please be mindful of letting your student arrive earlier.

  • The tardy bell rings at 7:35 and the gate and cafeteria door will be closed. At this time, students will need to be checked into the front office by an adult.

Dismissal Helpful Tips

Transportation Changes

For the safety of our students and to ensure an organized dismissal, all students will be dismissed according to the mode of transportation on file for that day.

Any change to your child’s transportation must be made by calling the front office no later than 2:00 PM. We will not accept same-day transportation changes after 2:00 PM. Late changes create confusion for students and staff and interfere with our campus-wide dismissal procedures.

Please do not email or message your child’s teacher with transportation changes. Teachers are actively instructing and supervising students throughout the day and may not see messages before dismissal. All transportation changes must go through the front office to ensure they are received, documented, and communicated correctly.

Thank you for helping us keep dismissal safe, consistent, and efficient for every student.

If you did not receive a car or walker tag, please stop by the front office where extras are available to be picked up. If you do not have a dismissal tag, please be prepared to produce an ID to ensure allowable pickup for the student.

Attendance FAQs

1. Comal ISD only allows 8 parent notes per school year. After the 8 parent notes are reached, it will have to be a doctor note to excuse an absence.

2. NOT all parent notes are excused.

  • A list of examples for which an absence may not be excused is in the parent/student handbook you received electronically when registering your student and can be found here.

3. Comal ISD does not excuse traveling, being out of town or vacations.

  • The only exception is if you have to go out of town for a funeral or a family emergency.

4. Parents do not need to call and let us know that your student will not be at school.

  • A phone call or voicemail does not excuse the absence. All you need to do is send a parent note or doctor note upon return to campus. You can submit the note through Skyward or your student can turn them into the front office.

5. ALL notes need to be turned in or emailed within 2 days of the students return to campus. This prevents notes from being denied due to an attendance timeframe being close and attendance no longer able to be adjusted.

6. ALL parent notes NEED to have a reason for the absence on the note. It does not need to be in detail.

  • EX: "Death of a family member" "Kept home from school because of illness." "Family medical emergency."

7. It is NOT always excused when a student goes home from the nurse.

  • It is the parent's responsibility to verify with the nurse if this is nurse excused or not. If the nurse explains that she cannot excuse the student for going home, you will need to send a parent note or doctor note to excuse the class periods missed.

We are excited to welcome Nurse Tayte to the Ocelot Family. Nurse Tayte previously served the students of Moringside Elementary and is very familiar with School Nursing and Comal ISD. When you see her around, please give her a big Ocelot Welcome!

If your student needs over-the-counter medications not listed on the standing medical delegated orders, nursing staff will require a physician, podiatrist, or dentist authorization to administer the medication in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing licensing standards. Please remember that all medications must be brought in the the nurse's office by a parent.

Birthday Treats and Lunch Procedures Birthday Treats and Lunch Procedures

We love to celebrate your child on their birthday and we thank you for helping us keep all students safe while celebrating special occasions!

To ensure the safety of students with allergies, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice to your child’s homeroom teacher if you plan to bring treats. This allows the teacher to notify families of students with allergies so they can bring an alternate snack if needed.

If you are bringing a treat for your child’s birthday:

  • There will be a cart in the foyer for drop-off.

  • Stickers will be provided on the cart for you to write your child’s name, teacher, and grade level.

  • All treats must be store-bought.

  • Treats should be delivered by 11:00 a.m.

The same procedure applies to lunches being dropped off for your child.

State Student Electronic Law State Student Electronic Law

Comal ISD is following state law House Bill 1481 from the 89th Legislative Session, prohibiting students from using personal communication devices while on school property during the school day effective August 25, the first day of school for the 2026-2027 school year. This includes all instructional time, lunch, and hallway passing periods, from the first bell to dismissal.

β€œPersonal communication device” is defined in Texas Education Code Section 37.082(d). This includes cellphones, personal tablets/laptops, radio/paging devices, and gaming devices. It also includes any wearable technology that is capable of digital communication or telecommunication, such as AI/smart glasses, smart watches, earbuds, wireless headphones, and fitness trackers.

Disciplinary Measures for Violations

All district administrators and school-based staff members are authorized to confiscate a personal communication device used in violation of this policy. If a staff member confiscates a student device, the staff member shall ensure the device is taken to the campus administration, or designee.

A student who violates this policy is subject to the following disciplinary measures, subject to and in accordance with the district’s Student Code of Conduct (SCOC), including any progressive sanctions for ongoing violations each semester. Non-compliance with staff directives to turn over prohibited electronic devices will be considered insubordination and handled in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

If a personal communication device is not retrieved by a parent or guardian within 10 business days of the school sending notice, the school shall send a second notice that specifies that the school will dispose of the device if not retrieved within 90 days of the second notice. The school may dispose of the device if not retrieved within 90 days of sending a second notice to the student’s parent or guardian.

In an attempt to keep our campus clean, we are asking that if your child is bringing a water bottle, that it has a completely closed lid, not one with a straw. If your child does bring a water bottle, it must contain only water and nothing else. With water bottles getting left in the classrooms and around the school, we don't want to attract any unwanted pests with open bottles that contain sweet, sticky drinks. We appreciate your understanding and working with us on this! Students who bring a water bottle that cannot close will be given a disposable water bottle to use for the day.

Campus Visiting:

One of our top priorities each and every day is your child's safety. Below are the guidelines when visiting our campus.

  • Office staff will grant access to the front office for check-in. All exterior doors will be locked as ringing the doorbell will be mandatory to enter the building.
  • Comal ISD has added self check-in kiosks at every campus to streamline the visitor process and enhance campus safety. Visitors can also use the Raptor Safe App to pre-verify their identity before arriving for an even faster check-in experience. https://raptortech.com/raptorsafe-app/

  • Visitors will be asked to provide a valid, state/federal issued identification card, which will be scanned using our visitor management system, and to identify the purpose for their visit.
  • If the scan meets school/site criteria, the visitor will be allowed appropriate access after receiving a visitor’s badge.
  • All visitors must wear their visitor's badge at all times while in the facility.
  • The visitor will be requested to return to the office to return their badge, and check out when their visit is completed to be logged out of the system.

Introducing Anti-Bullying, Safety App Called Anonymous Alerts

Comal ISD is excited to partner with Anonymous Alerts - an anti-bullying and safety app that allows students, parents and community members to send safety alerts anonymously to district administrators.

Anonymous Alerts empowers students, parents and staff to speak up by confidentially reporting bullying, cyber-bullying and other sensitive topics. Students are still encouraged to reach out to a teacher, school administrator or counselor to report an incident. Anonymous Alerts is another tool for them to use.

How to make a report:

  • Download the Anonymous Alerts app for free from the Apple Store, Google Play store, or the Chrome store. Open the app and enter activation code: comalisd.
  • Go directly to https://tips.anonymousalerts.com/comalisd. This link is available on the Comal ISD website.

Standard Response Protocol Standard Response Protocol

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

A critical piece of school safety is the uniform response to any incident at school. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by school and district administration and staff.

Comal ISD uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides common language around five protective actions campuses can take when an emergency arises. The SRP is based not on individual scenarios, but on the response to any given situation. The actions used are Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter.

Parents will receive messages containing these actions during the school year. Students are taught these terms along with drills according to the action. Here is what these different actions mean.

  • Hold – In your room or area. Clear the halls.
  • Secure – Get inside. Lock outside doors.
  • Lockdown – Locks, lights, out of sight
  • Evacuate – To the announced location
  • Shelter – Hazard and safety strategy

Learn more about the SRP at the "I Love U Guys" website.

Title 1 Information Title 1 Information

What does it mean to be a Title 1 Campus?

Title 1, Part A is a federally funded program under the Every Student Succeeds ACT (ESSA). The purpose of Title 1 under the ESSA is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments. While ESSA has many requirements, there is a strong focus throughout the law on parent and family engagement notification and involvement, particularly as it relates to:

  • Ensuring that high-quality academic assessments, accountability systems, teacher preparation and training, curriculum, and instructional materials are aligned with challenging State academic standards so that students, teachers, parents, and administrators can measure progress against common expectations for student academic achievement.
  • Affording parents substantial and meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children.

Texas Senate Bill 10 Texas Senate Bill 10

Senate Bill 10 of the 89th Legislative Session requires Texas public schools to display the Ten Commandments in each classroom. In accordance with this law, Comal ISD has posted donated copies of the Ten Commandments in all classrooms.

In compliance with the law, posters have been hung in Oak Creek classrooms. Please note that this will be a posting in the classroom that does not have an instructional component.
