Welcome Ms. Marisa Smith to Hawthorne High School
We are excited to welcome Ms. Marisa Smith as our new Administrative Assistant at HHS. Ms. Smith brings more than eight years of experience in educational and administrative roles and holds a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from William Paterson University, along with an Excel Associate Microsoft 365 Apps Certification. Most recently, she served as a Teacher's Aide for Garfield Public Schools, where she gained valuable experience supporting students and staff, managing confidential information, maintaining accurate records, assisting with daily operations, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. We are thrilled to have Ms. Smith join our HHS family and look forward to the many contributions she will make to our school community.
Student Scholarship Shines in Perspectives 2026
Congratulations to all of our students whose work was selected for publication in the 2026 edition of Perspectives, Hawthorne High School's Academic Research Journal. Students earned this honor through outstanding submissions and a successful revision process with Library/Media Center Specialist Mrs. DiGeronimo. A special thank you to Supervisor of Humanities Ms. Smith and Mrs. DiGeronimo for their leadership and support in bringing this publication to life. We are incredibly proud of our student authors for their hard work, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to academic excellence.

Celebrating Our Valedictorian and Salutatorian
This week, we proudly celebrated our Class of 2026 Valedictorian, Olivia Passero, and Salutatorian, Jonathan Barbarisi, at the annual Passaic County Valedictorian and Salutatorian Breakfast at The Brownstone. Olivia and Jonathan joined their families, fellow valedictorians and salutatorians from across Passaic County, and were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements and dedication throughout their high school careers. They were also joined by their school counselors, Ms. Banca-Ross and Ms. Walker, as well as our Superintendent, Mr. Mignanelli, and Board of Education Trustee, Mr. Clavijo, who were proud to celebrate this special honor alongside them. It was a wonderful event that highlighted the hard work, perseverance, and excellence of these remarkable students. We congratulate Olivia and Jonathan on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to celebrating them one final time as they cross the stage at graduation on June 18, 2026.
Juniors Experience Letters from Anne & Martin
Students Create and Solve Historical Connections
Mr. Corvo shared, "Students created their own "Connections"-style games using key people, events, terms, and concepts from the course. Once completed, students rotated around the room playing each other's games, debating possible answers, and working together to find the correct connections. The activity generated a high level of engagement and discussion, with students genuinely enjoying the challenge while reinforcing their understanding of the content through collaboration and friendly competition."
Biology Beyond the Classroom
Taking advantage of the beautiful weather, students in Mr. Crimmel’s Biology classes ventured outdoors to learn about local edible plants and their medicinal uses. Through hands-on exploration, students practiced plant identification while discussing how various species have been used throughout history for food and healing. The experience also included an exciting wildlife observation, as students spotted several Northern Water Snakes near the base of the dam, providing a real-world connection to the ecosystems and biodiversity studied in class.
