Weekly Update
September 19-24, 2022
A Message from the Principal
We are half way through September!
Please check in with your child to see how their classes are going, are they asking questions, are they using their time wisely, do they need extra assistance, are they staying organized? Look through their planners, check out their backpacks, help them create an organization system so they are able to stay on top of their school work.
Our first Monthly Celebration will be on September 30th, students can not have more than 5 missing assignments and can not have any F's.
If you are concerned with your child's grade don't hesitate to reach out to their teachers.
Please continue to have a conversation with your students about treating each other kindly and with respect. There is never a need for rude comments or hands on each other. We might think we are joking but it doesn't always come off that way to some and we need to be more respectful to our peers.
If you are bringing your children to games that is awesome! Please make sure they are seated with you and are not running through the halls or commons.
If your child is attending Home High School games please make sure they are being polite and respectful. There should be no foul language and no throwing of bottles or any items off of the stands. There are also not allowed to play in the end zone on the football equipment. If students can't handle this they will be asked to leave the game.

Connecting with the Counselor
This week, we started one of my favorite picture books -- "The Invisible Boy." This book is about Brian, a boy who feels invisible at school. He is ignored by the teacher and his classmates, never chosen to be on kickball teams, and is excluded at lunch. When a new student, Justin, comes to school, Brian's life changes. While reading this book, we talk a lot about empathy and what we would do differently if we were characters in this story.
As your student...
1. So far, what is the book "The Invisible Boy" about?
2. Have them tell you about the "lunchroom scene" in the book.
6th, 7th, 8th Grade
This week, students started a unit about Executive Functioning. This refers to the skills in our brain that help us accomplish our goals. There are 10 different components that we will cover in this unit: planning, working memory, metacognition, attention, task initiation, time management, organization, self control and flexibility. On Thursday, students took a pre-test as well as a self assessment for each of these skills.
As your student...
1. What was your highest score on the self assessment?
2. What was your lowest score on the self assessment?
3. Have your student summarize what we are talking about when we say "executive functioning."
