A Message from our #UnaManada Principal
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month!
We want to give a huge thank you to all of our amazing parent and grandparent volunteers! Your time, energy, and kindness have made such a difference in our lunchroom, on the playground, in the library, in classrooms, during Book Battles, La Tienda, and at so many special events throughout the year. Volunteering is such a wonderful way to get a peek into your child’s day—seeing their learning in action, meeting their friends, and connecting with their teachers. We’re so grateful for the heart you bring to our school community.
Thank you for being such an important part of what makes our school a special place to learn and grow!
Recess Volunteer Request
Recess is a great way for students to get active and burn off some energy! We offer a wide variety of activities for students to play while outside. Some of the more popular activities are sports related (football, basketball, and soccer). It is great having our students come together to play an organized activity with friends and students who may not play organized sports. It builds character, teaches respect and patience, and helps kids learn a new sport.
We have always asked parents to help volunteer in the lunchroom, and we thought we would extend that to our recess time! Having parents who can help referee basketball, football, and soccer who know and love the game would be a huge blessing to our students and staff. Our staff aren't always knowledgeable in the rules of every game and are not able to stop and ref while supervising their entire section of the playground. Also, students need help learning how to self referee, play fair, and walk through conflict resolution.
We do ask you to commit to a spot for the remainder of the year. This will allow you to build trust with the kids playing these sports. You can also help by joining in the game or being involved from the sidelines. The import part is being involved in the game!
If you are looking for a way to volunteer at SSE and haven't found your niche, this might be it. We would love for volunteers to help ref at recess. Any questions can be directed to the office at 605-367-4655.

Annual Update and Online Registration
The Annual Update for the 2024-25 school year is now open on Infinite Campus. Please log into your Parent Portal account on either a laptop or desktop computer and not a mobile device to complete. If you do not have access to one, you can stop into the SSE office and complete it on one of our available chromebooks. Please complete it as soon as possible and it is expected that the update is completed for every student in your household.
¡Lobos Increibles!
We love to highlight our students and their success! Take a look below at all the amazing things some of our students have accomplished this last month. If your student would like to share their achievements, please email the information and pictures to mary.boen@k12.sd.us. #UnaManada

Una Manada Student Recognitions
Our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) team has started a celebration where Classroom Teachers are able to nominate one student who demonstrates our 4 core values: Leader, Aware, Responsible, and Kind. We recently had morning recongition program for these students and their entire families! What we see in the classroom is a testimate to how everyone (family members, students, and staff) is part of the pack and helps instill these values in our students! We are so proud of everyone nomiated in December!

Prairie Pasque Reeding Challenge
The Prairie Pasque Children's Book Awards are sponsored by the South Dakota Library Association. Prairie Pasque winners are determined by South Dakota fourth and fifth grade students. Students are encouraged to read and give a star rating for any book they read from the masterlists of titles. The books receiving the most highest number of stars from the students win the awards. A committee of educators and librarians select the books nominated for the awards.
This year Sonia Sotomayor had 16 students read all 10 books on the list!

Save the Date - Events at School Highlighting our Students!
We have several events coming up that will showcase our students! Make sure to mark your calendars for the following events:
- April 24th at 7:00 PM, 2nd Grade will be performing their concert based on the children's book "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. The story will be narrated by students in both Spanish and English and all students will be singing songs that help to express the meaning of the story line. Each of the classes will be doing some special part involving either creative movement/dance, playing instruments, or dramatization. Make sure to make your calendars early for this exciting event!
- May 1st will be the Annual SSE Talent Show! There will be a matinee at school for the students and an evening performance as well! We are always blown away by the students and their skills!
Libros de Los Lobos
Taking Care of Books
There is a large quantity of lost or overdue library books this year. Please have your student look for their books and bring them back to school. If you cannot find them, please let Mrs. Egstad know so we can replace the book. There is an incentive during Library Specials for the students who have returned their books and show our Lobos Value of Responsibility! Also, "Books are friends, not food." Well... maybe that isn't the correct quote, but it works! We are seeing an uptick in books being returned to the library with crumbs, grease spots, and food on the covers. Towards the end of the year, student's bookbags start containing more than just paper and books. It may be a good idea to clean them out and maybe send your child's Backpack through the Washing Machine! It's also helpful if you have your child transport their books in a large Ziplock bag. Thanks for your help!
SORA - eBooks and Audiobooks for Your Student
There are so many resources available to your student at home! In addition to our physical collections, the district purchase eBooks and audiobooks and make them available through the SORA app. You can download it on your home devices to access these books. For more information, check out SORA here: https://soraapp.com/library/siouxfallssd.
Lobos Lunch Zone

My School Bucks - Daily Grade Level Lunch Schedule
Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to help during lunch! We really appreciate it. If you are unable to committ to helping every week, you are still welcome to volunteer. Please email mary.boen@k12.sd.us and andrea.fowler@k12.sd.us or call the office at 605-367-4655 in advance.
If you would like to eat lunch with your student, you can do that in the office or our vestibule. Due to number of students and the assigned seating at lunch, we are unable to have parents sit and eat with studetns in the cafeteria. You are also welcome to come and take your student out for lunch as well.
Message from our Nurse
Health Guidelines
Just a couple of friendly reminders to keep our students and school healthy as we dive into fall:
- A student with a temperature of 100.4 or higher should stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of medications. This means if your child is sent home from school for a fever, they cannot come back the next day until 24 hours have passed AND they have been fever free without medications.
- Vomiting/Diarrhea: Students should be free from vomiting and diarrhea for at least 12 hours before returning to school. If they cannot practice independent hygiene, they will be sent home.
- Along with cold and flu season, it is allergy season. If your students need cough drops to soothe sore throats, please fill out the medication form allowing them to have cough drops at school. You can fill it out in the school office.
If you have any questions please reach out to Nurse Mariana 605-367-4655. Please save this flier for more information.

SFSD Parent Survey
he Sioux Falls School District values parents/guardians as partners in their child(ren)'s school success. Please take this short survey to provide feedback regarding your experiences this school year. The survey closes Friday, April 19, 2025.
NOTE: If you have more than one student, you are welcome to fill the survey out once for each child as we recognize feedback is best when it is specific.
3rd Quarter Grades are Available
A reminder that paper report cards will not be sent home with students. You can view your student's grade by visiting the Parent Portal in Infinite Campus. If you have any questions about accessing the Parent Portal, please call the office at 605-367-4655.

Assessment and Evaluation Testing Information
Spring testing is underway! To help your students do their best while testing, there are a few things you can do at home. Encourage your students to go to sleep early and wake up and eat a good breakfast (reduce sugar and increase protien). Remember to send a healthy snack that will not cause any sugar crashes. Also, check out the Meal Viewer website or app to keep track of what is for lunch. That way you can pack a nutritious lunch if your student is not going to eat what the school is providing that day. You can learn more about the assessments the district participates in here.
Free Developmental Screening
The Sioux Falls School District offers free developmental screenings for children ages birth to age five. We assess your child's motor, language, concept, self-help, and social skills development.
During the screening, we’ll also discuss free opportunities available for your child within the District.

Water Only in the Classroom
Only water in a bottle with a lid is allowed in the classroom for students. We have seen an increased amount of other beverages including energy drinks being brought to school in the morning. Our classrooms have carpet and beverages other than water are harder to clean. Any student bringing any other beverage for use in the classroom will be asked to dispose of it when entering the building.
Please remind your students to only bring water to school for use in the classroom. Drinking water helps students perform better cognitively and physically. We do encourage water intake and the presence of water bottles in the classroom.
For more information about nutrition in our school, visit our Nutrition Services webpage.Weather Reminder
Please check the weather daily and make sure your students are dressed appropriately. Kindergarten and 1st grade do have a morning recess, so please take that into consideration.
Please speak with your student about our school value, Responsibility, and keeping track of their personal items. If your student is missing anything, please stop by and check the lost and found! Any smaller items or items of value are kept in the office and not put out with the rest of the lost clothing.
Also, please send extra clothes with your student to school. They can keep them in their backpack or in the classroom. Accidents and spills happen everyday. It is better to be prepared than have to bring clothes to school for your student.
Class Room Treats/Birthday Book Program
We would like to remind families that we do not allow classroom treats for birthdays or other celebrations due to food allergies. Please consider sharing non-edible treats or participating in the Library Birthday Book program as an alternative.
