Principal's Message
It is difficult to believe how quickly this year is passing. We are at the end of term three already with many of our senior students preparing for the external NCEA examinations which start November.
It is pleasing to see the opening up of opportunities once again for cultural and sports activities. We all can relate to and understand the benefits of participating in these extra curricula activities.
Of equal benefit is regular attendance at school. Please support our young people as we begin to drive the agenda of Every Day Matters. The relationship between attendance and attainment cannot be understated. Let's together, makes this a priority staring from day one of the upcoming term.
Thank you, mauri ora.
Remarkable Games
2022 Heavenly Ritana Ball
On the 27th Of September Ritana held its annual Senior Ball. Our venue, Lawson Field Theatre was fantastic! The Rose Room was filled with beautifully decorated tables and fairy lights, so that attendees could relax, socialise and eat some delicious kai - while the Theatre itself had its seats retracted, becoming an excellent, often full dance floor and area for our DJs. The students all looked ātaahua and their conduct on the night was exemplary. Every student voted on the night for their Ball Royalty who were heartily cheered as they collected a crown, sash and other prizes. After three years of COVID-related cancellations, what a pleasure it was to finally be able to have a School Ball in 2022! Photographer Oliver Aldridge captured incredible images of the night, some of which are shown here.
King of the Ball: Brooking Poi
Queen of the Ball: Rhiannon Kapa
Prince: Jeremy Auckram
Princess: Chloe Atkins-Wells
Best dressed Male: Daniel Pokia

Maurice Hulme Girls Football Tournament - Rotorua
This year the First XI Wahine Football team travelled to Rotorua to play in the Maurice Hulme Winter Tournament. The girls played 8 tough games and although we did not come away with a win, the team developed in skill and resilience. We were able to score some amazing goals from our strikers Shae Rangihaeata, Alyssa Davis, and Lane Bartlett. We had a strong defence with Stella Perano, Amandine Mariette and Rhiannon Kapa holding down the fort. In goal, we had Rilee Walker. This young lady made some phenomenal saves and we would encourage Rilee to seriously consider playing for us next year. Anyone would have thought Rilee played for the Football Ferns! Selina Mill, Adellah Berge and Lillie-Mae Valentine ran until they could run no more, and Jaylyn Harrison and Awhina Brown became superstars on the field. Next year will be our year girls!

IVF Va'a World Sprints 2022
A huge congratulations to Te Riringa Babbington-Parata who has achieved international success at the World Waka Ama Sprints held in London during August.
Winning a total of 4 gold medals - she is a world champion in all of her events paddling in both the Open Women & Junior 19 grades.
Te Riringa is pictured here 4th from the left, with past students Hinewaipounamu Rangihuna-Winikeri and Piper Glass-Donaldson flanking her.
IFMA Youth World Championships
A huge congratulations to both Jada-Shay Pomana and Ishtar Mackey-Huriwai. They were both were members of the New Zealand Muay Thai Team, at this year’s IFMA Youth World Championships. Jada-Shay won a silver medal. She was also the flag bearer of the NZ team. Ishtar won a Bronze Medal but unfortunately her competition ended early due to injury.
Jada-Shay is pictured here in the center and Ishtar beside her on the right.

Junior Food
An electric mixture of sweet and savoury food for their terms assessment. This is where they choose what they are going to create, plan the menu, produce the recipe, order the food and then voila this is what you get.
Lots of different processes and skills are needed to be able to do this. The end result is always gratifying. Ka pai team of juniors.
Year 12 Fashion
The Senior Fashion class took up the challenge to incorporate Maori printed fabric to create a patchwork quilt and cushions. This was impressive considering that neither of these students had actually sewn before.
A baby inspired cot blanket and nappy tote bag turned out to be a classy act. The design of the two were of the student's choice and she should be proud of this effort.
Ka pai girls.

Rongomaiwhiti Angitu Our Term Unit: War on Waste
Mihimihi
Tena koutou katoa
He wa pai te mahi tahi me nga tamariki.
Rongmomaiwhiti Angitu akonga have had an exciting term learning about the environment around them and the importance of following the three R’s. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. With certain food scraps, they also made a worm farm, learning how worms help our soil.
In terms of the recycling process, nga akonga looked at how the most common waste materials could be converted into something new.
Beach walks rewarded nga akonga with fabulous driftwood shapes, shells and seaweed - perfect natural resources for their clay, shell and wood mobiles.
Using remnants of fabric and gifted beeswax, nga akonga helped make beeswax wraps.
Nga akonga have been busy little bees themselves and have helped think about items that are simple and practical. They have learned some amazing lessons using Maths, English, Social Science, Science, Technology and Art by going through the processes from concept to sale.
We consider their efforts a huge success no matter the end result. They have learnt that they can make a profit AND have fun doing it!
Rongomaiwhiti Angitu would like to thank our sponsors: Findlay's Bakery, The Paint Zone, Mr. Henwood and his Year 11 students - George Bodle, Jasper Florence and Kade Harrison for their amazing work on our shop front, Miss Sabrina Street for her generous donation of beeswax and Ms Deb, our fab cooking teacher. x
Year 13 PE trip to Mt Ruapehu
The Year 13 Academic PE class was happy to be able to travel back to Mt Ruapehu this year with no COVID restrictions. Students spent 2 days on Whakapapa - Happy Valley learning how to Snow Board. They were all very quick learners carving up the slopes and doing some tricks. A highlight was definitely Breeze Parsons' jump and Mr Hooper's improvement.
During our day tramp to Taranaki Falls we were lucky enough to enjoy walking along the river through native trees and then on our arrival at the waterfall it started snowing! What a cool experience. We checked out the Huka falls which were pumping with all the rainfall we had.
We were able to zipline, a 2.5 hour journey where we soared over three waterfalls, including 7m Tutea Falls. We completed many different ziplines, including being upside down and some tandem ones too. We were also lucky enough to be able to plant some native Manuka and Ti Kouka trees to help with reforestation.

Indoor Bowls –We say this each year, "This is our year," meaning, we’re going to do better than before.
The North Island Secondary Schools Indoor Bowls Championship held at Mount Maunganui, it was pretty awesome. Our progression throughout the tournament reflected how well we trained and the adjustments made which were seamless. Congratulations to Kayla Trowell who made it through to the finals of the singles beating her brother, Nathan, in the semifinals with her last bowl after being down by 2 points. However, In the finals, Kayla placed 2nd. Jakeb Te Kani Brown did pretty well too, recording a 2nd in the Plate Finals Singles and a 2nd in the Plate Final Pairs with Te Maioha Olsen.
Overall, a great tournament, a great team to take away and we were well cared for by Koka Ngaire.
Ngata 7's – The weather wasn’t on our side on the days set for our Y9 and 10 Netball and Rugby 7's at Ngata College. So a week or so after the cancelled date, Tessa Rangihuna and Ropoama Hape of Nga Uri a Maui contacted me for a 7's game. On the day arranged, we had the bare 7 rugby boys who played their hearts out. Well you wouldn’t believe it, Lytton improving as the game went on. They were boosted when young Mahuta Reedy-Tuhura came on in the 3rd quarter replacing tries scorer Kruze Hoepo-Casey. They ought to be pleased with themselves going down something like 36-29. Upon reflection I heard someone say, “Sir, we should have played the 4th
quarter”.
Our netballers didn’t fare that well, as NUAM used the game for a practise before their
sojourn to the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament. Beating us 22-10. Many thanks to NUAM for their hospitality and sharing of kai afterward. A new date of Wednesday 26th October has been set for the Ngata 7's to go on with.
Rugby Girls – The offer from Miah Nikora (Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union) to train our girls was too good to pass up. However, our girls didn’t all take this opportunity prior to their rugby term beginning. It showed in the games. We could have done much better. Credit to them though, they turned up. Wednesday games began with a 10-minute Ripper Rugby between GGHS, NUAM, Hawaiki Hou and Lytton. Followed by 3 x 10-minute tackle games between Hawaiki Hou, GGHS and us.
Football Boys – I never got to accompany the Boys Football over at Nelson Park, but it seems that those who eventually took part enjoyed themselves. I think it was more about ‘playing’ football and giving it a go with your mates, having fun and enjoying the moments.
Muay Thai - Jada-Shay Pomana. “A member of the New Zealand Muay Thai Team, at this year’s IFMA Youth World Championships, held in Malaysia from 9th –21st August 2022. Jada-Shay won her semifinal against Turkey and lost her final against Russia bringing home a silver medal for NZ. She was also the flag bearer of the NZ team. Prior to the worlds champs she did an intensive 3-week training program at Soma Fight Club in Bali, where she was lucky enough to spar against UFC fighter Stephanie Egger on two occasions”. Ka mau te wehi.
Waka Ama – Te Riringa Babbington –Parata attended the IVF Vaka World Sprints in London recently. She was a member of the Horouta Waka Hoe Club J19 team, which included former Lytton students. Piper Glass-Donaldson and Hinepounamu Rangihuna- Winikerei. Their combined contribution enhanced their clubs’ success at the ‘Worlds’, winning gold medals in each of the W6 500M, W6 100M, W12 500M and W12 500M Open Womens events. The effective and productive formula of Horouta Waka Hoe Clubs accomplishment, leading up to the ‘Worlds’, was built upon hard ‘yakka’, commitment, dedication day in day out, training often up 3 x times per day. Eating, sleeping, resting appropriately. Te Riringa sacrificed her other favorite sport of netball. ‘’The probable risk of injury was too great to bear and more than likely may have ended my chance of attending the ‘Worlds ‘if I got injured”, she said. “In a few weeks we start back waka training”. Kei runga noa atu.
LHS Swimming Champs- We had great numbers in the competitive swimming sports this year. Some houses were well represented and it showed in the points tally at the end of the day. The 25M events were popular. In the Senior Girls 25M Free Hayley Durston shattered the previous record held by Awhina Rickard (14.24) since 2013, in the time of 12.71. Absolutely fantastic. The 50M and 100M races seemed to spread the numbers thinly. Overall a great day. Thanks so much to our timers and recorders for the manner in which you were able to manage your roles to make it stress free.
