A Note from the PHS Parents' Club
Fall arrives September 22nd. The weather seems skeptical. Your Parents' Club, however, isn't waiting and is busy working in every corner of PHS -- the Library, College and Career Center, Hospitality, Emergency Preparedness, Food Services, Diversity and Inclusion, and in every grade level -- while also continuing to meet monthly with administration on behalf of all PHS families. Our aim is to improve and enhance all students’ experience at PHS - both inside and outside the classroom.
One of our favorite things we do every year: teacher grants! The Parents' Club awards grants directly to PHS teachers to fund things they need but don't always have the budget for. Past awards have included online periodical subscriptions, calculators, insect aspirators, and binoculars. We are kicking off that process now and would love some volunteers to help. If you're interested, send me an email: avzambrana@gmail.com.
Our next meeting is Thursday, September 25th at 9am. Find meeting dates and everything else at the PHS Parents' Club website.
Not a member yet? Join at the Piedmont Store. With more members, the more good work we can do.

The Power of Research
This is the inaugural year for AP Research. For the 11 students and teacher, Mr. Mockel, they are trail blazers in many ways. Not only did these 11 students have to complete a rigorous course, AP Seminar, last year, they will produce an end product that is comparable to a thesis.
They will have produced a paper, given a presentation, and participated in an oral defense. Many of our students are also hoping to publish their work. Their topics thus far are as diverse as one can imagine. To see the level of achievement that can be gained from this course, one only has to check out a recent issue of The Daily where the student references that the work started with an AP Research class. I have no doubt that our students will be there someday too.

Our Title Has Changed
Notice something different about the newsletter? Well, if you look at the header, you will now see that I have renamed it to Parent & Student Newsletter. While our students always had access to the newsletter, I wanted to make it more inviting for all our students to read as an important source of information. While the target audience will be parents, many of the articles will have relevance for our students.
So Highlanders, please peruse the newsletter at your leisure and reach out if you have any questions.

Juniors Helping Seniors is Back!
Great Volunteer Opportunity in the Student Center
Would you like to meet a lot of fantastic students all while serving them great food? Well, we have the opportunity for you! You can serve brunch or lunch at the PHS Student Center. It is easy, you can see students greet you with a "thank you" and smile every time. Having a variety of parents be a part of this makes us a more connected community. Plus, the pay is great--volunteer pay! You might even see me serving alongside you sometimes. I hope you can consider this. The signup is below.
Calling All Parents: Volunteers Needed for IRB
PHS is proud to offer AP Research for the first time. We have an ambitious group of students ready to go with their work. As part of this process, some (maybe many) of them are looking to publish and use human subjects. As such, they need to bring their proposal to an IRB: Institutional Review Board.
This process is new to us as the instructor and I learn together. Part of this process is to form the Institutional Review Board, which must be composed of at least 5-voting members and 1 unaffiliated voting member. You can also find more information here. As such, if you are a scientist (or a retired one) and willing to give of your time in mid-November, just let me know.
Attention Juniors: Become a State Board Members

Why You Should Apply
Make Real Decisions: Debate and vote on statewide education policies that directly affect your peers.
Travel & Get Paid: Attend bi-monthly meetings in Sacramento. Your hotel and meals are completely covered, plus you’ll earn a $100 daily stipend.
Build an Unbeatable Resume: Gain top-tier leadership experience that sets you apart for college apps and beyond.
The Role
Term: August 1, 2027 – July 31, 2028 (during your senior year).
Time Commitment: Attend roughly six 2-day board meetings across the state over the course of the year.
Who Qualifies & How to Apply
Eligibility: You must be a high school student who will be a senior in the 2027–28 school year.
Application Link: Grab the application package on the SBE Student Member Recruitment Page.
Deadline: Submit your completed application by Friday, September 25, 2026, at 5:00 PM.
Where to Send: Email your package to sbe@sbe.ca.gov or submit it directly via the SBE Online Portal.
Don't let someone else speak for your school experience—step up and lead! Have questions? Reach out anytime to sbe@sbe.ca.gov.
PUSD LCAP Parent Advisory Committee
PUSD is in the third year of implementation of its current Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). In addition to progress monitoring, PUSD will also elicit community, staff, and student feedback in order to create a new 3-year LCAP. Therefore, the district is seeking 2 parent representatives from each school to commit to the following meeting dates from 4-5:30 pm at the Haven's Library: 9.2.26, 11.19.26, 3.17.27, and 5.6.27. Here is the LCAP Parent Advisory Interest Form.

Piedmont Parents Network
September 15: 7:00-8:30 pm, PHS Student Center
PPN is excited to partner with the Wellness Center this month to present Dr. Lauren Hartman on Recognizing and Preventing Eating Disorders. This topic is increasingly relevant to our middle school-aged students, particularly with the transition back to school. Dr. Hartman will help us understand how eating disorders present across different ages and genders, gain confidence in knowing when to seek help, and learn practical evidence-based strategies to foster healthy attitudes toward food and bodies. Donations for this event may be made via the Piedmont Store. If you plan to attend, please RSVP HERE so we know generally how many to expect. The form will also allow for the anonymous submission of questions. We hope you will join us for this important event!
Upcoming Meetings:
9th Grade: Wednesday, September 9: 7:00-8:30 pm. Please RSVP HERE. Location will be shared with all attendees before the meeting. If you have any questions, please email Judy Lin: judywlin@gmail.com
10th Grade: Wednesday, September 30: 8:45-10:15 am. Please RSVP to Anne Hawkins: hawkins42@gmail.com for location information.
Thanks & Appreciations
- Special Thanks to Teddy King who sprinkled some magic and saved SeniorFest. Or at least kept it from becoming a major headache and allowing our seniors to have an amazing experience. Also Kudos to Chelle and Vice Mayor McCarthy for working with our parents to ensure that this event can happen.
