Continuing The Wonderful World of Words: A Study of Poetic Language

In this unit of study, students continue to explore the author's craft through a variety of fiction and poetry as they start to see the world through special lenses, focusing in on what they see with their hearts and their minds. They begin to see that authors choose words carefully and find power in the words they choose. Students discover that different viewpoints in the meaning of a text are influenced by personal experiences, values, beliefs and cultural background, therefore there is not just one “right” interpretation of a text. Students begin to understand that writers express their beliefs, values, ways of life, through text and that writers use powerful words to create, to influence and empower others. In writing workshop, students are immersed in poetry, and use the power of words to express themselves in shorter pieces of writing trying out new structures, feelings, and point of views.

Creating Critical Thinkers: Valuing a Global Society

In this unit of study, students read a variety of texts written in first and third person to gain perspective and step into another person’s shoes. Students examine the text and think about the topic, theme, and message and how the author uses words, print and graphic features, the text structure, and text resources to influence and communicate meaning.

They learn to think critically about information and claims, draw on compassion and courage, and speak up for what’s right, important and fair to advocate for self and others.

Students understand the value of working to earn money, and making decisions about saving, spending, or even donating that money. They study producers and consumers and their role in the production of goods and services. They also understand the importance of government in our daily life by learning about public officials and services our government provides in our communities.

In writing workshop, students are writing like scientists and historians as they write informational texts, including procedural, charts and graphs, question & answer, cause and effect, etc. In the last bend of writing, students are producing an informational book that teaches readers all about a topic discussed in this unit. They become professors and share their writing with the world in an exhibition.

Math

Continuing Geometry and Fractions

Over the course of this unit, students investigate two-dimensional shapes, fractions, congruence, and symmetry, using a variety of tools and models. There is a strong emphasis on identifying, describing, constructing, drawing, comparing, contrasting, and sorting various types of triangles and quadrilaterals, as well as other shapes, throughout the unit. The first grade focus on composing and decomposing shapes resurfaces at a more sophisticated level in Modules 2-4 as students are introduced to concepts of tiling a plane and finding the areas of shapes by counting the number of units it takes to cover them without leaving any gaps or holes.

Measurement, Fractions, and Multi-digit Computation with Hungry Ants

This unit addresses metric measurement, fractions, and multi-digit addition and subtraction, set in the context of army ants, picnic ants, and imaginary ants who enjoy toys as much as second graders do. In Module 1, students discover that the average length of a worker army ant is 1 centimeter, make army ant rulers similar to the inchworm rulers they made in Unit 4 and use their new rulers to measure in metric units. In Module 2, an amusing children’s book about ants serves as a springboard for investigating division and fractions. Modules 3 and 4 feature a new set of story problems that revolve around a toy store for ants.

Science / ciencias

Continuing Building Bridges

Students build on their understanding of matter by describing physical properties including shape, mass, temperature, texture, and flexibility and using tools. Students classify matter as solid or liquid and compare changes in matter by heating and cooling. Students investigate physically changing matter by cutting, folding, sanding, and melting. Students combine a variety of materials, complete an engineering design challenge to build a bridge, and justify the use of materials based on physical properties.

Continuing Construyendo puentes

Aquatic Habitats and Plants

The student will explore patterns, systems, and cycles by investigating physical characteristics and behaviors of organisms, life cycles, and interactions within their habitat. Students will examine how plants and animals depend on each other and their environment for survival.
