Carkenord Elementary Weekly Update
May 11, 2026
Principal's Note
Greetings Coyote Families!
I would like to start by saying that I hope all of our Carkenord Moms had a wonderful Mother's Day! All of us thank you for trusting us with your children each day. Many of us our moms too, and we know how hard life can be when raising little ones. It truly takes a village some days, and we are so happy to be part of your village.
We are approaching our final days of school very quickly. M-Step testing has just about finished as we only have a few more students to finish up. NWEA testing will take place for most students next week. Teachers will be testing on May 18-20th. Your child's teacher will send out more specific details as to when your child will test in that window. Parents can help their child do their best by ensuring they have had a good night's sleep before testing. Also, encouraging your child to do their very best goes a long way too. We are encouraging all students to increase their RIT scores on the NWEA. Like in the past, the classrooms with the highest percentage of growth will earn the privilege of keeping Coyote Grow in their classroom. In addition, the grade level that shows the most growth will earn an extra recess and a treat! We want all students to show growth from the winter to spring window.
Please continue to encourage your child to finish the school year on a positive note. Arrive on time and stay all day. Help reinforce your expectations for their behavior while they are here at school and riding the bus. Help your child to see that there is a home to school connection and that we are partners working together for the success of every student.
Before closing, I want to thank our parents for all of the love and support that was shown last week during Staff Appreciation. Our PTC showered us with goodies and relaxation, but so many parents also sent in flowers, snacks, etc. for staff. Thank you for taking the time to show someone here that they are appreciated!
With Coyote Pride,
Angela Szczepanski
Attendance Matters
You have to show to grow!
If you have been reading my newsletters throughout the year, you know that attendance is important. In looking at our own student data, we dug into the students who are receiving support in the area of reading and compared it to their attendance.
- In the area of reading, students who have missed 0-10 days of school, 20% of them scored well below grade level or scored less than 20th percentile on the last NWEA test.
- Students who have missed 10.5-20 days of school, 28% of them scored well below grade level or scored less than 20th percentile on the last NWEA test.
- And finally, students who have missed 20.5 days of school or more, 48% of them scored well below grade level or scored less than 20th percentile on the last NWEA test.
This data confirms what I have been sharing. Students do better in school when they are here. It is very challenging to make up missed learning experiences.
Make coming to school on time and staying all day, every day, a priority.
Positivity Project
Dear Families,
This week, our school community will focus on the character strength of Fairness. Fairness means treating everyone with respect and recognizing that all people have value. It also means being open-minded and fair in how we approach situations.
By teaching fairness, we help students develop into responsible, trustworthy, and kind individuals who care about others. Fairness builds the foundation for strong friendships and a positive community.
To practice and encourage the character strength of fairness at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
iPad Collection
All student iPads and charging blocks and cables should have been returned to school last week. If you still have charging blocks or cords, please be sure to send them in ASAP. Students with missing iPads, cords, or charging blocks will be charged for those missing items.
Exact Path
With the school-issued iPads being turned in, I have had parents ask about how their child can continue to use Exact Path on their own devices at home. Students can log onto the Carkenord home page>academics>media center>Media Center Resources>Exact Path or use this link: Edmentum® Learning Environment Login (https://auth.edmentum.com/elf/login)
From there, students should click on the Microsoft button. They will then log in using their LCPS email and password that they use for Schoology.
This will allow students to access Exact Path from any device. In addition, our media center home page has other great resources for students to use at home. Consider bookmarking that page to your child's device.
LCPS Non-Homestead Millage Replacement
Set a calendar reminder for Tuesday August 4, 2026! On that day, LCPS Voters will vote on a Non-Homestead Millage replacement that does not impact the taxes on your home in any way. For more information about the non-homestead millage, along with FAQs, please visit the district website at: https://www.lc-ps.org/community/operating-millage-proposal/
Parent Survey
Every year we strive to be better. Please take a few minutes to respond to the parent survey found in the link below:
Carkenord Extreme Science Night
On Thursday, May 21st, Carkenord students will be participating in an amazing assembly called Extreme Science with The Science Wizard! Then, in the evening, families are welcome to come and watch a demonstration of cool science tricks in a fun and engaging format. This event is for current Carkenord Students and their immediate families from 6-7:30 pm.
Please note: there will be no food or beverages provided or available for purchase.
This is a FREE event, thanks to our Title I funds, but we do need families to RSVP. Please use the link below to register to attend:
Coyote Day Volunteers
It's hard to believe but it's almost the end of the school year and we're looking for volunteers to help with our end of the year celebration, Coyote Day!! If you are able to help on Monday, June 1st, we have morning (9am-12:45pm) and afternoon (12-3pm) openings. If you'd like to volunteer all day, please sign up for both (lunch is provided for all day volunteers )! Volunteers will help at the following stations: inflatables, first aid, bingo, field games, blacktop games, gym etc. We will assign stations as volunteers arrive on Coyote Day
Birthday Treat Reminder
As a reminder, it is our building policy that students do not bring in food items for birthday treats. Birthdays are special for our students and will still be celebrated, however, due to the large number of students with various allergies and other medical conditions, we do not celebrate with food. Parents are welcome to send in non-food items. In addition, please refrain from bringing in trinkets or toys that resemble weapons or depict violence in any way. Be sure to connect with your child's teacher about how they celebrate birthdays in the classroom if you have specific questions. We appreciate your help in keeping everyone safe.
End of the Year-Placement for 2026-2027 School Year
As the end of the school year is quickly approaching, please know that teachers work in teams to place students for the next school year. This work is all completed before the end of May. While we do not accept requests for specific teachers, we do give parents an opportunity to complete a form that best describes their child's learning styles to assist the team in classroom placements. Please do NOT write a desired teacher name on the form. Our team works to design balanced classrooms. Our special education team makes decisions about placements to assist in scheduling. In addition, we consider students' academic abilities and behavior needs to ensure that our classrooms have students to create groupings of students for instruction and intervention. It is best practice to have students with mixed abilities within classroom spaces. If you would like to complete a form for your student, they will be due no later than next Monday, May 18th.
We do not share classroom placements with families until Package Pick Up--which is tentatively scheduled for August 24th.
If you would like to complete a form online, you may access it here.
If you prefer to print a copy to send in you may do so here.
Intent to Return
Another key part of classroom placements and staffing is ensuring we know which students we are expecting to return.
Please complete this short survey no later than Monday, May 18th.
As a reminder, if at any time during the school year, your permanent address changes, you need to update the office. We will need you to provide proof of residency (mortgage or lease, tax bill, etc.) In August, we will mail out information for Package Pick Up to the address we have on file. Please be sure yours is updated to prevent any delays in receiving communication for next year.
