Helping Children Grow in Responsibility

Dear Lower School Families,

As the school year begins to wind down, this is a meaningful time to consider how we can continue helping children grow in independence at home and at school. Throughout the day, students are learning to follow routines, manage materials, solve small problems, and take ownership of their learning. When these same habits are encouraged at home, they often carry over into the classroom in meaningful ways.

From a biblical perspective, building independence is part of helping children grow in faithfulness and responsibility. Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” As children learn to complete tasks, contribute at home, and take responsibility for what has been entrusted to them, they are developing habits that honor God and support their growth both at home and at school.

Why It Matters

Children who are growing in independence are often better prepared to follow directions, begin tasks, stay organized, and persevere when learning feels challenging. These habits help build confidence, responsibility, and ownership.

Ideas by Grade Level

• put dirty clothes in the hamper
• carry and unpack their own backpack
• help set the table
• follow a simple morning or bedtime routine

1st Grade
• make their bed
• put away laundry with help
• refill a water bottle
• complete a short chore before play
• gather materials needed for an activity

2nd Grade
• prepare a simple snack
• help unload non-breakable items
• tidy their room
• keep track of library books
• follow a checklist for daily responsibilities

3rd Grade
• pack for an outing
• help prepare part of a meal
• manage daily reading time
• complete chores with less prompting
• solve small problems with guidance

4th Grade
• manage a daily checklist independently
• organize personal belongings
• plan how to complete responsibilities before free time
• take greater ownership of reading and summer learning
• help around the house in more consistent ways

As families begin looking ahead to summer, small opportunities for responsibility each day can make a lasting difference. Thank you for partnering with us as we help students grow in confidence, responsibility, and faithfulness.

WEEKLY READ ALOUD RECOMMENDATION WEEKLY READ ALOUD RECOMMENDATION

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt is a creative and humorous story about a boy named Duncan, who discovers that his crayons have each written him a letter. In their letters, the crayons share their feelings about how they have been used or sometimes overlooked. This fun story encourages children to think about perspective, creativity, fairness, and the importance of every individual.

From a biblical perspective, the story reminds us that God created each person with unique gifts, value, and purpose. Just as each crayon had a different role, each child is wonderfully made and has something important to contribute. This connects beautifully to 1 Corinthians 12, which teaches that we are all different parts of one body and that every part matters. The story also provides a meaningful opportunity to talk with children about empathy, kindness, and considering the feelings of others.

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for guiding us through this week of tests. Thank you for the strength to keep going, the focus to do our best, and the patience to handle challenges along the way.

As we finish this week, fill us with peace and pride in our hard work. Help us trust that what we’ve done is enough. Remind us that growth matters more than scores, and that every step forward counts.

Give us rest, renewal, and confidence for what comes next.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
